Date Index Thread Index You have it. When hypertext is used as a database, one is using an old form of a database (dates back to the sixties in computer media, and to medieval scholars in paper media). The cart metaphor is to illustrate that age does not equal obsolescence because the application determines the utility. As a GUI, there are similar considerations. GUIs have been through an evolution in which early GUIs (think Englebart and Sutherland) used properties such as link controls in context of content that were later improved at Xerox PARC, largely discarded in a MACINTOSH, then revived in the primitive Mosaic browser. Functionality such as Previous (back) and Next, History lists, etc should be considered similarly. Would an aggregator be retrograde? What are the precedents? len From: bryan [ mailto:bry@itnisk.com

1825-1850: A Period of Immigration and Change
A quarter of the way through the nineteenth century Oregon remained predominantly wilderness. The Willamette Valley at this time is described as "an oak orchard," a distant reality of what it is today. Early settlers were predominantly young men who were engaged in local fur trading. American missionaries also came west during the 1830s hoping to spread the word of God to the distant frontier. The Hudson's Bay Company was the most dominant government and economic entity in the Pacific Northwest during this time. By the 1830s the Hudson's Bay Company held a virtual monopoly on cattle in Oregon. American efforts to thwart this British dominance in the area resulted in the creation of the Willamette Cattle Company in 1837. This venture gave American settlers a growing sense of independence from British interests. It is seen as the first cooperative venture among early Oregon settlers. Settlers would continue to invite U.S. influence by seeking legislation to protect settled lands. By the middle of the 1840s, Oregon was becoming known as a place of cheap and fertile land. Stories of abundant and free land, as well as bountiful agricultural potential, brought the first significant numbers west in the early 1840s. These immigrants came predominantly from the Midwest, and also from other northern and eastern states.

Departmental Lists
Departmental lists are updated weekly from current information in the University's administrative database. Each list contains addresses for university staff in that particular department. These lists are not restricted in normal use. However, combining multiple lists for a single mailing may be considered abuse and will be dealt with accordingly. The list names are derived directly from the department names as they appear in the University phonebook. Some manipulations of those names are necessary so that the resulting addresses are syntactically legal:
  • Spaces are replaced by hyphens
  • Periods and apostrophes are removed
  • Names appearing with commas are rotated and the commas removed, e.g., MUSIC, SCHOOL OF becomes SCHOOL-OF-MUSIC
  • Any occurrence of multiple hyphens is reduced to a single hyphen
After all of the above, a -L is appended to the end of the prior result to form the actual list name.

Director of Institutional Programs,
Nixon Foundation
A couple of years ago, the director of an arboretum near Yorba Linda called and was excited that one of his employees spotted then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich taking an early morning walk in their garden. Ho-hum, I thought! Gingrich had already visited our Library gardens several times. We were also looking forward to his visit later that day. Presidents, Prime Ministers, religious leaders and royalty have all enjoyed the magnificent gardens in Yorba Linda. Inspired by Pat Nixon's love of the White House grounds, the centerpiece is the Library's California Formal Garden. It was in this garden that another early morning walk, one that had historic significance, took place on the Library's dedication day.
Click to enlarge On the morning of July 19, 1990 - just prior to the Library's dedication ceremony - Presidents Bush, Ford, Reagan, Nixon, along with their First Ladies, had their official portrait taken in the California Formal Garden. The Presidential party stopped to admire the gardens and pose for a history-making moment - the first time four Presidents and four First Ladies had ever been photographed together. Just beyond the palm trees was a crowd of 50,000 and photographers en masse, waiting to record the historic dedication ceremony. Since that day, the gardens have matured and blossomed into one of Southern California's most popular botanical attractions.

UWM is preparing for targeted growth in three areas: education, environment and health, and economic development. E d u c a t i o n
Fundamental to the future of Wisconsin and the region is quality, accessible education for its citizens. The State of Wisconsin can be very proud of its many achievements in education. The University of Wisconsin System and the Wisconsin Technical College System are national models for quality, coordination, and access. K-12 students across the state consistently score in the upper percentiles on nationally normed tests. UWM has aided significantly in this effort by bringing the scholarship and professional expertise of a research university to bear on critical education issues. Yet the comprehensive excellence that this state should be demonstrating is far from achieved, in particular concerning the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Addressing existing needs is a collective challenge that can only be undertaken as a complete and total Wisconsin effort. It must be done in full partnership, the kinds of partnerships established in The Milwaukee Idea. We need holistic strategies through which our urban research university, our urban school district, our social service and health agencies, and our local and state government join forces. UWM is a pivotal partner in bringing about this positive change.

The buildings and other physical facilities that comprise a campus play a vital role in carrying out the missions of the UW System and its institutions. While the people of the State of Wisconsin spend large sums of money supporting year-by-year operating costs for instruction, research, and public service, the investment in the physical plant is also substantial. The quality of the physical facilities contributes immeasurably to the offering of quality educational and research programs and the overall image of the universities. Planning succeeds when those who use the campus and those who participate in its creation learn to appreciate its value, understand its power to enhance the educational process and human life, and become active advocates for excellence in the built environment. Sound physical planning must take into account long-range program directions and the facilities needed to support those directions. Good planning means thinking beyond what may be newly required; it means planning the wise stewardship of existing physical facilities. This stewardship role involves making the best possible use of existing facilities, seeking capital funding for major maintenance and renovation, and maintaining adequate operating budgets to ensure appropriate on-going routine and preventive maintenance. Judicious planning will result in cost-effective measures to assure the highest and best use of available resources.

The Evolution of Sustainable Development
in Northampton County, VA
A Brief History of the Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park key: sustainable development, northampton, eastern shore, economics In light of recent developments at the Cape Charles Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park (STIP), the proposal by New Ravenna Inc. of Exmore to purchase the building, and the ensuing reaction of some members of the Joint Industrial Development Authority (IDA), ShoreLine will take an in-depth look at Northampton's industrial park efforts. This month we will examine the history and evolution of the STIP and potential changes in the IDA and their approach to marketing the project. In furture issues we shall attempt to present an examination of the financial details of the STIP project.
Also, the
ShoreLine staff developed a brief questionnaire about the STIP which was distributed to over thirty local leaders who have a stake in the future of the project. We will publish responses in their entirety as we receive them.
While Building One at the Port of Cape Charles Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park (STIP) opened only last year, the origins and evolution of today's Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park span well over a decade, the tenures of four County Administrators and four Boards of Supervisors. The STIP has it's roots deep in the recession and economic woes of the late 1980's.
