At the first modern Olympics in 1896, three swimming contests were held. However, no universally accepted rules, regulations or definitions governed the swimming events. Priority decisions or goals were clear: to standardise the rules for swimming, diving and water polo; to obtain control of world records and to maintain an up-to-date list of these records; and finally, to ensure the direction of Olympic Games competitions for swimming, diving and water polo.

About Trampoline Sports Trampoline Sports consists of four different disciplines.
  • Individual Trampoline Synchronised Trampoline Double Mini Trampoline Tumbling
Individual Trampoline consists of an individual competitor performing two routines on the trampoline. These routines consist of a compulsory and a voluntary routine. The compulsory routine consists of ten consecutive skills, five of which are mandatory skills that are set by the International Gymnastics Federation and must be performed, the other five skills are at the discretion of the competitor. This routine is only judged on performance not on the difficulty rating The voluntary routine also consists of a combination of ten different skills, which must be performed one after another with no breaks between the skills. These are all selected by the competitor. This routine is judged on the performance and a degree of difficulty score is then added to this total. This is where competitors use their more difficult skills in order to gain a higher degree of difficulty score. The more rotations and twists gives the skill a higher degree of difficulty. Many competitors of world standard will use a combination of triple somersaults, double somersaults with multiple twists, both forward and backwards to make up the combination of ten skills. Individual Trampoline made it’s debut as an Olympic sport at the Sydney 2000 Games – with Ji Wallace from Queensland winning silver in the men’s event. Victoria’s Robyn Forbes was Australia’s female representative – finishing equal ninth in the final placings.

Athens Olympic Preview : "Citius Altius Fortius"
By Charles Haslam Published: Friday, April 23, 2004 Media Credit: www.stgeorges.bc.ca
In less than four months the world will congregate in Athens, Greece, for the 28th Summer Olympic Games. Over 200 countries will participate and close to 10,000 athletes will compete in nearly 30 different sports. The Olympics are going home and it's going to be a great show. People like to watch the Olympics to watch athletes succeed. I like to watch the Olympics to watch them fail.
The summer Olympics are always exciting, especially because the winter Olympics are so boring. The only reason to watch the winter Olympics is for the corruption in judging and athletes who test positive for performance enhancing drugs. I used to enjoy the winter games but my respect went straight to hell when the International Olympic Committee admitted curling as a sport.
Gymnastics
The human body is capable of launching itself up to 12 feet in the air and can do multiple flips and twists. 12 years of training, 6 hours a day - 6 days a week can be behind a gymnast when they step onto the Olympic mat, and nothing is more satisfying than watching them crash face first on the mat. I love gymnastics, especially when they fall.

In a few years'time, the sporting world might see a new trampoline worldpower emerging in the East.
China has seen "a booming picture" in the development of the sport introduced from abroad only three years ago, predicted Zhang Jian, a leading official with the State General Administrative of Sports, who is in charge of the sport.
"The new sport has made a tremendous headway," Zhang told Xinhua, referring to what he described as "astonishing performance" of young Chinese athletes at this year's junior world championships in July in Denmark . The novice athletes bagged home three golds, four silvers and one bronze, to the surprise of such worldpower as Britain, Russia France and Australia
The unexpected results in Denmark have greatly boosted China's confidence, considering that it had resulted for so short a period of efforts, against that by the world powerhouses who had experience for more than three decades.
The nationwide registration of trampoline athletes has reached 260 since 1998, with 18 provincial and municipal sports institutes taking up the discipline, according to Gao Jian, another ranking official in charge of trampoline.

The Development of the Sport
The sports of trampolining and tumbling are as old as man, a reflection of man's desire to defy the ever-pervading presence of gravity. A number of cultures have devised apparatus to send an athlete into the air, i.e., an outstretched animal skin being used to throw up, and safely receive, the descending performer. Circuses have used a number of devices to show off aerial and floor somersault activity. The way the activities are now practiced reflect the intrusion, delightful in this instance, of modern technology. Modern trampolining has only emerged in the last 49-50 years from the prototype apparatus built by George Nissen, USA, in his garage in 1936. The Air Force, and later the Space Agencies were not slow to employ trampolines with their pilots and astronauts. Medical authorities and those working with handicapped persons have found many exciting benefits from being able to use a trampoline. At the recreational level trampolining has an immediate appeal, especially for the young people. Every era produces at least one step forward in the sophistication of a trampoline machine used. The most modern ones are capable of projecting an athlete to such a height that the top stars can touch 10m-high ceilings and perform repetition triple somersaults with ease.

Trampoline bounces into Games
SYDNEY, Australia Bouncers will be out in Sydney's Olympic Park on Friday but not to throw rowdy Australians out of pubs. These are competitors in the newest Olympic sport trampolining. The men and women who will be leaping up to 20-meters (65 feet) in the air prefer to be called bouncers to trampolinists. They hope their acrobatics will raise the profile of the sport, one of the least known in the Games. Trampolining was invented in the 1930s by Americans 'Leapin' Larry Griswold, a vaudeville acrobat, and George 'Hands' Nissen, a carnival performer who preferred to walk around on his hands.

Trampoline Use Jumps, Injuries Soar
A serious sport Safety precautions A serious sport More than just a recreational pastime, trampolining is a great form of aerobic exercise for athletic training. During World War II, trampolines were used to train pilots and navigators in fitness and orientation. After the war, astronauts trained on trampolines to develop body positioning for space flight missions. Trampolining became an international sport and was introduced into school physical education programs to combine fitness and fun. However, US participation declined as trampolines were withdrawn from schools due to injury law suits.
  • jumping must be supervised by professional spotters;
  • somersaults are only allowed with permission and supervision;
  • special trampolining footwear may be required; and
  • jewellery or articles that may catch on equipment are prohibited.
Parents who buy a trampoline for their children often overlook the hazards, despite the safety precautions that come with the equipment.
  • Trampolining injuries slightly exceeded cycling-related admissions.

Gymnastics Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports In ancient Greece gymnastics were an important part of the education system; as young male pupils assembled at the "gymnasium" not only for physical exercises, but "mental exercises" in art and philosophy, among others Artistic Gymnastics Men's gymnastics was on the program for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and it has been featured in the Olympics continually since 1924. Olympic gymnastic competition for women began in 1936 with an all-around competition, and in 1952 competition for the separate events was added. The men's events are the rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar, side or pommel-horse, long or vaulting horse, and floor (or free) exercise; women's gymnastics consist of four events: vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. The competition includes individual scores for each apparatus, individual scores for all apparatuses (individual all around) or the team score, where an athlete's score is added to the scores of the teammates. Soviet gymnast Larissa Latinina set the unsurpassed record of 18 medals (including nine gold) in three consecutive Olympics (1956, 1060 and 1964), while the absolute champion of the Montreal Games Nikolai Adrianov, also from the former USSR, holds the record for male gymnasts with 13 medals (seven gold, four silver and two bronze) for three consecutive Games (1972, 1976 and 1980).

Trampoline became a competitive event in 1936. From 1947 through 1964, trampolining was included as an event in gymnastics competitions by both the AAU and NCAA. The first trampoline World Championships were held in 1964, and trampoline was first recognized as a sport in its own right in the United States in 1967. Trampoline made its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Description of Events TRAMPOLINE Trampoline routines are performed on 7'x 14' web or string beds that can propel the gymnast up to 30 feet in the air. A competitor takes as many preliminary bounces as necessary for height and control, before beginning the first of 10 skills in a routine. Two routines are performed, a compulsory and a voluntary. The compulsory routine must include four required elements, plus six other skills chosen by the athlete. The second routine is a 10-skill voluntary, made up of single, double or triple somersaults with multiple twists. No skill may be repeated within either routine. A successful routine will show consistency of height, proper technique and a minimum deviation from the center of the bed. The routine must end under control in an upright position. SYNCHRONIZED TRAMPOLINE
Synchronized trampoline demands the same athletic skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Athletes perform two routines, a compulsory and a voluntary. Using two trampolines, two athletes perform identical 10-skill routines at the same time. In this most artistic event, each performs a mirror image of the other, doubling the visual beauty of the competition. The goal is to have both trampolinists in total synchronization of skills, height and form.
