NEW ON THE JOB
A Mission to Build Better Neighborhoods by Design
By David Whelan Augusta Catalina Del Zotto was born in the Outer Mission, a working-class San Francisco neighborhood populated by a mosaic of first- and second-generation immigrants from many different countries. Except for a stint in a Syracuse, N.Y., graduate program, she has never lived away from her hometown. Now Ms. Del Zotto, the daughter of a stonemason, is returning to the community-organizing work she began at age 14 in San Francisco, this time by taking the reins of Asian Neighborhood Design. The organization was founded in 1973 by several Chinese-American architecture students who sought to improve conditions in the city's Chinatown by making apartments more livable through better design. The group, which has a yearly budget of around $3-million, still includes an in-house team of full-time architects on its 45-person staff, but now works throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. For example, after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake badly damaged a five-story, wood-frame apartment building in Oakland called the Madison Park Apartments, Asian Neighborhood Design served as the lead architect on a project to rebuild the structure as low-cost housing. The 98 units built by a nonprofit developer are now fully restored to their 1908 landmark design, except that they are also wheelchair-accessible and earthquake-resistant. The work received a preservation award from the California Preservation Association in 1996.

STUDENT-BUILT HOUSE COULD BE SOMEONE’S DREAM HOME In a fenced-in enclosure behind Prince William County’s Forest Park High School, high school students are learning the building trade the old-fashioned way as they construct a 1,200 square foot, three bedroom house under the supervision of a licensed and certified building trades instructor. The fruits of their labor will be available for purchase later this spring, school officials say, as the house will be sold through a silent bidding process. Approximately twenty students from six of the school division’s eight high schools are bused to Forest Park every other day to participate in the three-credit Building Trades course. The students attend academic classes at their base schools on the days they do not come to
Forest Park. Construction funding is provided by the school division and the Prince William County Vocational Foundation, an organization formed in 1974 to provide students with on-site vocational education programs that teach practical building trades skills. This is the seventeenth project constructed by the building trades students, but the first to be built as a modular home that will be transported by the purchaser to his own lot. The home is entirely stick-built by the students, with only the trusses prefabricated. The proceeds from the sale of this house will help finance the next one, to begin in the fall of 2003, as the sales of previous houses have financed the succeeding ones.

  • Youth Government Building Trades
  • The Youth Government Building Trades Partnership, in it's third year, is a multi-faceted approach to providing hands on learning for students and giving them a taste of what a career in a construction trade could be. Students start in a classroom and them go out to the site. They learn from the ground up and by the end of the year have learned about all aspects of construction. During the 2001-2002 school year the YGBTP students are constructing a home.
