Track and field ends year at center of steroid scandal
By Rob Gloster, AP Sports Writer, 12/25/2003 Track and field officials often fret about the lack of attention their sport gets in the United States. ADVERTISEMENT Not this past year. Sprinters and throwers generated many headlines in 2003 but it wasn't the kind of publicity those officials desired. Track and field ended the year at the heart of a steroid scandal that has shaken the sports world. At least five track and field athletes tested positive for the newly discovered steroid THG, and several testified before a grand jury probing a nutritional supplements lab. The probe is focusing on possible drug and tax violations by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, which has provided some of the nation's top athletes with supplements. The lab also is accused of supplying athletes with THG, which was only unmasked this summer. Grand jurors have heard from athletes in several sports ranging from baseball's Barry Bonds to boxer Shane Mosley and a source close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity has told The Associated Press that four Oakland Raiders tested positive for THG. But the main focus of the scandal has been track and field.
