Psychological Services For The U.S. Olympic
Track and Field Team
Robert M. Nideffer, Ph.D. I became involved with the U.S. Olympic track and field team early in 1982. At that time, the USOC Sports Medicine Committee funded an "Elite Athlete Development Project", designed to provide sport science services to five different Olympic sports. Track and field was one of the sports selected, and Betty Wenz and I were asked to work with the women's and men's teams respectively. Since that time, the provision of services in track and field has expanded thanks to additional support from The Athletics Congress (TAC), track and fields sport governing body. Currently, service provision is being coordinated through Dr. Harmon Brown, with input from Betty Wenz, Rick McGuire, Keith Henschen, and myself. Up to the present time, Betty Wenz and I have been the service providers at the Olympic games (1984; 1988). Other sport psychologists, including Henschen, McGuire, and Gloria Balague have traveled with teams to other international competitions, and/or to the World Championships in 1986. Currently, McGuire is working very hard to develop programs for world class athletes at a junior level, and is helping to develop a list of service providers who are located in various geographical regions across the United States. Philosophy: Making Contact: In 1982 when they began the elite athlete project, I was contacted by Richard Suinn and Jerry May and asked if I would be willing to work with the men's track and field team. Those individuals contacted me because of an article that I had written in 1971 that involved the application of psychological techniques to the throws (shotput, discus, javelin, hammer). Through the years, I have found that writing has been a very valuable tool for me. Most of my involvements in sport have occurred as a direct result of my writing. In fact, it was writing that helped establish some credibility in track and field after my initial introduction.

Armed Forces Dominate National 30 KM Championships by Al Heppner The US Armed Forces feature three of the nation's top racewalkers and they all performed brilliantly at the National 30 km Racewalk Championships in Chula Vista, CA on 11 January. Air Force Captain Kevin Eastler led the way with a near-record performance and an easy victory in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 44 seconds, while the Army contingent of SPC Al Heppner (2:16:52) and SGT John Nunn (2:19:39) took second and fourth, respectively. All three soldiers walked personal best times in the race. Eastler broke away after the first kilometer and never looked back. "I wanted to hold (American Record) pace and I was surprised that no one went with me," Eastler said. Meanwhile, Heppner was part of a chase pack with Olympians Curt Clausen, Tim Seaman, and Sweden's Andreas Gustafson. Nunn was in the second pack with training partner Sean Albert. At 10 km, Eastler was 44:31, with the pursuit group including Heppner at 46:04, with Nunn, who had broken Albert, at 48:38. Gustafson was disqualified at 12 km, while Heppner began to inch away from Seaman and Clausen to move solidly into second.

The 2004 Relays featured a return to prominence by Tennessee's women's team, the continued dominance of Arkansas' men's distance relays, the breaking of the longest-standing Carnival college relay record, and American high school athletes again taking the measure of their Jamaican counterparts. It also featured the return to Franklin Field of Marion Jones, Alan Webb and other American athletes who should be prominent performers at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in August. A three-day attendance record of 112,701 was set, with nearly 50,000 in attendance for Saturday's grand finale, and a record Thursday total of 24,613 on hand for the full-day of women's events and evening distance races. NCAA president Myles Brand will be the keynote speaker Thursday for the National Wrestling Coaches Association convention at the Hyatt Regency. The convention is held in conjunction with the U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling. The trials run Friday through Sunday at the RCA Dome. Brand will be the first NCAA president to address the wrestling community, according to USA Wrestling. He recently announced a joint NCAA/U.S. Olympic Committee task force to study the decline in Olympic sports at the college level. "Obviously, colleges and universities are faced with significant economic issues with regard to athletics programs," Brand told The Associated Press last week. "But the benefits these student-athletes bring to campuses and the benefits many ultimately share with the nation on the Olympic stage should not be minimized when institutions make budgetary decisions."
