On the surface the black athlete is perhaps the most visible integrated racial subject in the U.S.seen in all facets of the media, cheered by millions of fans, and teamed with white counterparts. To some the projection of the black athlete on TV, the sports page or the cereal box is a reassurance that minorities are understood and accepted in the U.S. However, while often hailed as an icon of racial progress, paradoxically, the black athlete creates a potentially injurious basis for all other ideas about blackness and black identity.

104. Aetna: African American History Calendar: 1991: Alice Coachman
the first woman of color in the world, and the first AfricanAmerican woman towin a gold medal in track and field in the history of the modern Olympics.
http://www.aetna.com/foundation/aahcalendar/1991coachman.html
Alice Coachman Alice Coachman paved the way for hundreds of black female Olympic champions. She became the first African American woman to win a gold medal with a victory in the high jump in the 1948 Olympics in London. Breaking the previous world record in the high jump, Coachman's success challenged long-held assumptions about women's ability to participate in track and field, and opened the doors for generations to follow. Born in Albany, Georgia, in 1923, Coachman was the fifth of 10 children. Denied access to public training facilities because of segregation, she ran barefoot on the back roads of Georgia, devising various makeshift barriers to jump over. In a region where, until the second half of the century, children of color were not required to attend school and few towns had high schools for them, Coachman had the opportunity to excel. In 1939, at the age of 16, she received at scholarship to attend Tuskegee Preparatory School. Before classes began, she competed in the women's track-and-field national championship. She broke the high school and collegiate high jump records without wearing shoes. Also at Tuskegee, she ran on the national champion 4x100-meter relay team in 1941 and 1942. In 1943, Coachman won the AAU nationals in the running high jump and the 50-yard dash. Because the 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games were cancelled due to World War II, she was unable to compete at the peak of her athletic ability.

Track and field complex named after BYU coach
NewsNet Staff Writer - 27 Apr 2004

or Print this story
By STEVE BITTER To commemorate nearly 40 years of coaching success, BYU renamed the track and field complex after legendary Cougar track and field coach Clarence Robison on Saturday. When Clarence first took the opening job in 1949, one might have wondered if 55 years later his name would still be the franchise of BYU track and field. It certainly is. In a collegiate and professional career and legacy spanning over a half-century, Clarence put the BYU track and field on the map and in the spotlight of collegiate track and field. When he passed on the coaching baton in 1988, it stayed in the Robison family. His son, Mark, was off and running in the coaches seat. As far as tradition is concerned, grandson Nathan occupies the third leg as BYU's top distance runner. When Nathan graduates, he will join the throngs of track athletes to have reaped the benefits of the Robison harvest. Before Clarence led as a coach, he followed as an athlete. He had run for a few years as a Cougar before military service in World War II interrupted his collegiate career. After the last shot sounded on the battlefield, Clarence later heard the starting gun of the Olympic trials.
