Finnish 400 Veterans Site Is A Beaut
Finns fly on the Web as well. A marvelous site by Georg Dunkel features exhaustive lists of Finland's top 400m runners in all masters age groups. Among the nuggets in the Finnish Veterans 400 site are the oldest under 50 seconds (38-year-old Jorma Hietamaki with a 49.94 in 1993), the oldest under a minute (62-year-old Toivo Vikmanand with a 59.7 in 1985) and his appreciation: "Thanks to my wife, who has endured this madness 30 years!" His site is in Finnish but has an English translation. Plus we learn: "Unto Mattsson siis uusi voittonsa vuodelta 1994 ja silla huomiolla, etta nyt tehty tulos on ehka kaikkein kovin 400 m:n veteraanitulos kautta-aikain. Hyvin lahelle tata yltaa Eino Salmisen 71-vuotiaana juoksema 1.05,95 (46,22)." Well done, Georg!

Jesse Owens once said, "In America, anybody can become somebody." somebody. He became a track-and-field legend and an American hero! Burning up the Track
Jesse came from humble roots. He was born in Oakville, Alabama. He was the son of poor farmers and the grandson of slaves. The Owens family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when Jesse was 9 years old. There, Jesse met Charles Riley. Charles was the track coach at Jesse’s junior high school. He became Jesse’s mentor and taught him to run "like the ground was a burning fire." Coach Riley also got the young athlete interested in the long jump. Jesse began to light up track meets around the country. As a senior at the 1933 National Interscholastic Championships, he broke the scholastic world mark in the 220-yard dash and tied the scholastic world record in the 100-yard dash. A Day to Remember
On May 25, 1935, the 21-year-old speedster was entered in four events at the Big Ten college track-and-field championships. It was a day the track-and-field world would never forget.

Track and Field evolves, Penn at the helm
Penn retracts just a bit...
Like every great dynasty, the Penn track team had a bit of a hiatus. Although the team won the Ivy League in 1941 and 1946, it no longer had the continuity of dominance that linked the Olympians of old. Still, Penn wasn't in the dark. At the 1950 Penn Relays the team won both the distance medley and the 4x800; Ben Kreitzberg took the 100 title himself. Additionally, Van Zimmerman and John Gray contended nationally in the pole vault, having legendary duels with Villanova's Don Bragg at close to world record height. The gem of this interreum period was John Haines, who crushed the competition single-handedly from 1953-1956, winning the AAU National Indoor 60m dash four times in a row and qualifying for the 1956 Olympic trials final heat in three events (100, 200, and 400).

In cross country, Indiana won three NCAA cross country team titles and had its first NCAA individual champion under Hayes. His team went from finishing eighth in the conference in 1925 to capturing eight Big Ten titles, six straight from 1928-1938. The Hoosiers never finished below second from 1928 until Hayes retired. He coached seven athletes at IU, 12 during his career, who qualified for the United States Olympic teams and his four-mile relay team (Lash, Deckard, Smith, and Trutt) set a world record in 1937. His efforts to promote intercollegiate cross country competition on a national level had much to do with the organizing of the first NCAA Cross Country Championship as well as the formation of the National Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (NCCCCA) for which he served as president of the group from 1939-40. Hayes served as an Olympic coach in 1936. (1944) Clifford Watson (1945-62) Gordon Fisher

http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/athletics/athleticsancient.html
ANCIENT ORIGINS HUNT TURNS FROM FOOD TO MEDALS In the sphere of track and field, there are at least two events that precede the ancient Greeks and running races. The pole vault formed part of the ancient Irish Taliteann Games in 1829BC, the origins of the activity stemming from the use of poles to jump over streams. Wood was used up until the 19th century, when bamboo from Asia was deemed better for the purpose. The hammer, too, was thrown at the Taliteann Games. The most famous of all track and field events in history is, arguably, a road race; the marathon. Legend has it that the race was devised by the Greeks to commemorate Pheidippides, a soldier who ran 25 miles to bring home news of the Athenian victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. Pheidippides ran, yelled out the great news and then dropped dead, so the story goes. In honour of the soldier who went the extra mile, the marathon of the ancient Games was run over 26 miles.

  • Athletes are disqualified if they false-start twice
  • The maximum allowable wind strength for recognition of world or Olympic records is 2 metres per second
  • In events up to 400 metres, athletes must not leave their lane
  • In events of 800 metres and over, athletes may only leave their lane after the break-line, a curved line marked on the track FIELD

  • A jump or throw may be disallowed if the athlete exceeds specified time limits between attempts

  • After each throw, competitors must exit the throwing area from the back of the circle COMBINED The rules for each event in the decathlon and heptathlon essentially match the rules for the individual events, with a few variations, notably:

The Olympic Games Story The Ancient Games The original games were held at Olympia, in Greece, and took place every 4 years.
Exactly when they started is not known, but the first written records date from 776BC, and the games continued until they were banned by a decree of the Roman Emperor Theodore I, "the Great", in 393AD So the last games held were in 389AD, which meant the games had been held 293 times (at least). The actual events in the games varied from time to time, but mainly were to do with running, wrestling, boxing and chariot racing. In those games there was interest only in who won, and the winner was awarded an olive wreath. Women were not admitted to the games, either as competitors or spectators. Revival Ernst Curtius, a German archaeologist, did a lot of excavation work at Olympia and, presumably inspired by that, in 1852 suggested that the Olympic Games should be revived. This idea was well-received by many and was finally taken up by Baron Pierre de Courbertin and, at his instigation, in Paris on 23 June 1894, a committee agreed to re-establish the Olympic Games, with a first meeting to be held at Athens in 1896 and every 4 years thereafter. Apart from the war years when no games were held, this has been kept up. In the ancient games, wars were suspended in order to allow the games to continue. The early games of the modern Olympics were of varied quality and success, with many highlights and low points. There were several calls for the games to be discontinued at various times but they always managed to keep going and, once they were re-established in 1948 (after a 12-year break), their future seemed assured. However, since that time they have become much bigger, very much more costly to stage, the subject of many scandals, and often the target of political action (in the form of boycotts and terrorism) so that it is not inconceivable that the future might see them discontinued, or at least modified in some way.
