Baron De Coubertin inspires the first modern Games
The first of the modern Olympic Games was staged in Athens, Greece, although financial difficulties almost saw it staged in Budapest, Hungary. Initially it was intended that Paris would host the first Olympics in 1900, but Athens was chosen four years earlier, though Greece ran into financial difficulties before the Games could begin. With Hungary preparing for its millennium celebrations, Budapest repeatedly offered to step in as a replacement but the Crown Prince Constantine of Greece set up an organising committee and the donations began to flood in. Just over 200 men, representing 14 countries competed in a total of 43 events. The majority of the participants were from the host nation with tennis, track and field, fencing, weightlifting, cycling, wrestling, shooting, swimming and gymnastics all contested. Cricket and soccer tournaments were cancelled due to a lack of participating teams while rowing and sailing competitions fell victim to poor weather. Event winners received a silver medal, a certificate and a crown of olive leaves. Runners-up were given bronze medals and a crown of laurel while third placed participants went home empty handed.

    Remembering Rod Milburn
    Posted: Thursday, May 20, 2004
Rod Milburn NEW HAVEN, CT. -This week's inductions of Alice Coachman, Florence Griffith Joyner, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame are a standing testament to the success of African-Americans track athletes on the world stage.
Today, we focus on another track standout from days gone by. Rod Milburn was not only a great athlete, but was also a community supporter as well. Born on May 19, 1950 in Opelousas, Louisiana, Milburn began his path to Olympic glory at J. S. Clark High School.
He defeated the best prep trackers in the state to earn a spot on the 1968 All-American team. While attending Southern University, he set or tied five world records and was selected to the all-SWAC team in all four years (1970-73) at SU.
Milburn also won three national collegiate hurdles titles and four National AAU championships, two each indoors and outdoors. During a semifinal race at the National AAU meet in 1971, he won the 120-yard high hurdles in 13.0, smashing the old world record of 13.2 that was set 12 years earlier.
Milburn also won the 1971 Pan-American Games title but his crowning achievement came in 1972, when he earned a gold medal in the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

First Olympic Appearance: 1896 by Gerry Brown The marquee sport at any Olympics is track and field, or athletics, as it is more widely known outside the United States. In fact, track and field is the group of events that comprised the core of the very first Olympics in ancient Greece . Today, while it might sound contradictory, track and field is more than just track and field.
      Did You Know?
A sprint, hurdle, long jump or triple jump will not be recognized as a world record if the wind strength behind the athlete exceeds two meters a second (11.6 miles per hour).
The sport involves the three major themes of running, throwing, and jumping and can be divided into four disciplines: track, field, road, and combined. The track events are all measured in meters and consist of the following: the sprints (100m, 200m, 400m), the middle-distance running (800m and 1500m), long-distance running (5000m and 10,000m), hurdling (100m for women, 110m for men and 400m for both), relay racing (4x100m and 4x400m) and finally the men's 3000m steeplechase. The field events are the long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw. The Sydney Games marked the Olympic debut of women's pole vault and hammer throw. The road events are the separate men's and women's marathons, the women's 10km race walk and the men's 20km and 50km race walks.

    WOMEN and SPORT HISTORY
The Women's Olympic Games: Important Breakthrough Obscured By Time by Bruce Kidd
Published in CAAWS Action Bulletin, Spring 1994 The Women's Olympic Games have long been forgotten, but during the 1920s and 1930s they were an important, international focal point for feminist efforts to improve women's sporting opportunities. The Women's Olympics were the brainchild of the remarkable Alice Milliat of France. A translator by profession, a rower and sports administrator by avocation, she was founder and president of La Fédération Sportive Féminine Internationale (FSFI). She started the Women's Games in direct response to the repeated refusal of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) to put women's track and field on the program of the Olympic Games which they organized. The first "women's Olympic Games" was a one-day track meet in Paris in 1922. Eighteen athletes broke world records before 20,000 spectators. The second Games were held in Gothenberg, Sweden, four years later. Women from 10 nations, including distant Japan, took part. (Canada was not one of them). With a spectacular opening ceremony and marchpast, the patronage of the Swedish royal family, and several world records, the Games evoked comparisons with the IOC's Stockholm Olympics of 1912. Although Milliat kept her part of the bargain, the IAAF subsequently granted only five events. A majority of the FSFI went along, ensuring women's competition at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam where
