During a recent lecture, Dr. Frumkin discussed the links between health and the environment. He outlined "six golden rules" of toxicity, and discussed their impact on the relationship between humans and nature and how this affects health. "Environmental health might be about much more than cleaning up toxins," Dr. Frumkin said. "For the great majority, our human existence has been imbedded in nature."

Breast Cancer and the Environment: The Toxic Connection
As breast cancer rates reach epidemic proportions, the search for an explanation continues. A recent issue of the Silicon Valley Toxics Action newsletter spotlights some environmental connections, as follows: The Chemical Connection Workers with unusually high exposure: A study among 24,000 blue collar workers in New Jersey found significant association between breast cancer among African-American women and employment in several chemical-intensive industries. Breast cancer mortality was 1.64 times higher among pharmaceutical workers and 1.51 times higher among electrical equipment manufacturing workers who, it was noted, are often exposed to high levels of solvents. (1991, American Journal of Industrial, Medicine) Similar results were found in New York state where high breast cancer rates were seen in women in the electrical and printing industry. (1986, New York Department of Health Monograph #21) Women chemical workers exposed to high levels of dioxin in a German pesticide plant had higher rates of breast cancer and twice the mortality rate of the German population as a whole.
