LOGAN, Iowa (CNN) Authorities in western Iowa were doing an aerial inspection Monday in the aftermath of tornadoes near the town of Logan that killed two people and injured at least 16, some critically. Tornado damage was reported in at least three counties. Harrison County Sheriff Terry Baxter said flying over the twister's path will help rescuers look for more possible victims and determine the scope of damage. The tornadoes, which developed about 4 p.m. Sunday, destroyed six homes, damaged several others and destroyed a bridge on a gravel road, Baxter's office said. They left a five-mile trail of destruction in Logan, a community of 15,000 people. The two people who died were killed when debris hit their car as they were driving, authorities said.

Tornadoes rip through Midwest, town evacuated
JACKSON, Nebraska (CNN) A series of tornadoes swept throughout the Midwest Friday evening, flattening homes, downing trees and forcing the evacuation of a small town in Nebraska. State patrol helped residents leave Jackson, Nebraska, due to a possible gas leak after one or more tornadoes tore through town around 6 p.m. Jackson, population 300, is about 85 miles north of Omaha. Capt. David Winkler of the Nebraska State Patrol said the tornadoes did not cause any fatalities in the state, but one woman was hospitalized after being pulled from the rubble of her home. Swirling winds produce extensive material damage in Jackson, Winkler said, destroying at least 10 homes. A spokeswoman for the Red Cross said residents will be moved on school buses to a school serving as a shelter in South Sioux City. "But many people are staying with friends and relatives, so there won't be too many at the shelter," said Yvonne Thallas in Sioux City.

INDEPTH: FORCES OF NATURE
Tornadoes - winds of destruction
"The worst tornadoes are the most violent storms on earth" - Environment Canada.
WHAT:
The swiftly moving air begins to spin like a top as it moves. If it spins fast enough, a funnel forms. When the funnel touches the ground, it is referred to as a tornado.
DAMAGE:
According to Environment Canada, there are an average of 80 tornadoes each year in Canada, causing two deaths and injuring 20. Damage runs into the millions.
Tornadoes are measured in Canada using the Fujita scale, developed by Chicago researcher Dr. T. Theodore Fujita. The classifications are as follows: TORNADO GAME PLAN: According to most weather authorities, including Environment Canada, your best option in the event of a tornado is to head for your basement. If you don't have one, get in a closet or small room near the center of the building, away from windows or doors. Environment Canada suggests getting into the bathtub and covering yourself with a mattress. Otherwise, get underneath a sturdy piece of furniture which can help shield you from falling or flying debris.

Information on tornadoes
A complete guide regarding information on tornadoes. Read about the violent wind that this storm is capable of producing, plus the damage.
Can you imagine winds of 320 miles per hour heading your way? An F-5 tornado has the potential of creating such a nightmarish reality. Not even a motion picture can exaggerate the ruins displayed by this devastating whirlwind. A tornado can be the most horrific and threatening of all natural disasters. It can kill everything and everyone in its path. Houses have been lifted by tornadoes, reeled, and then dumped thousands of feet from the original residence. Buildings and houses can be left sitting in the same location after being shredded, or they can be placed in another location with little damage. bodyOffer(32868) The tornados pattern is completely unpredictable but, more often than not, its damage is very complete. A tornado can actually leave a shovel standing against a barn while carrying away the other half of the barn and placing it at another location. At the same time the tornado can drive a piece of hay through that shovel without moving it. Within a tornados path there are awesome dramas, some including horrendous tragedies, while others include miracles. Tornadoes develop from thunderstorms when the cold and warm air meets. Rising air within thunderstorms cause an air shift from horizontal to vertical. A twirling rainfree wall cloud evolves. Within minutes a tornado develops from the thunderstorm.

Deadly tornadoes roar across Arkansas
A thick black funnel cloud touches down near a Faulkner County highway
January 21, 1999
Web posted at: 11:59 a.m. EST (0459 GMT) SEARCY, Arkansas (CNN) A series of tornadoes raced across Arkansas on Thursday night, killing four people and wiping out a fire department in a rural area northeast of Little Rock. Numerous injuries were reported across the state. The twisters were spawned by a rapidly moving weather front heading east across the Ohio Valley and the South toward the Gulf Coast. The storm also brought baseball-sized hail, powerful winds and lightning. Officials said three people were killed just outside Searcy, about 45 miles northeast of Little Rock, when a tornado ripped through the area. In the small farm community of Joy, the fire department was destroyed. "It was blown completely away," said Lt. Stan Rogers of the Searcy Fire Department.

However, they are also often found elsewhere embedded in the rainbands , well away from the center of the hurricane. Some hurricanes seem to produce no tornadoes, while others develop multiple ones. Studies have shown that more than half of the landfalling hurricanes produce at least one tornado; Hurricane Buelah (1967) spawned 141 according to one study. In general, tornadoes associated with hurricanes are less intense than those that occur in the Great Plains (see the Fujita Intensity Scale below). Nonetheless, the effects of tornadoes, added to the larger area of hurricane-force winds, can produce substantial damage. We have no way at present to predict exactly which storms will spawn tornadoes or where they will touch down. The new Doppler radar systems have greatly improved the forecaster's warning capability, but the technology usually provides lead times from only a few minutes up to about 30 minutes. Consequently, preparedness is critical Tornado Facts
  • When associated with hurricanes, tornadoes are not usually accompanied by hail or a lot of lightning, clues that citizens in other parts of the country watch for.

http://www.rcn27.dial.pipex.com/cloudsrus/tornadoes.html
Tornadoes
Formation Speed Vacuums Waterspouts ... Dust devils Formation... The m twisters Sometimes these clouds can be so large that pressure in them can vary, and they therefore have their own internal winds. If these winds start to rotate, they may result in the formation of a whirling funnel. This extends downwards from the base of the thundercloud, and can often look like a piece of hosepipe or an elephants trunk. Twisters have also been compared to the funnel that forms when water is sucked down a plug-hole. Have a look next time you take the plug out of a sink full of water. Speed... Inside Vacuums... Tornad oes start off white or grey in colour, although they quickly become darker as they pick up dirt and debris from the ground. The funnel acts a bit like a large vacuum cleaner, with the low pressure at the centre causing very strong upward currents which suck up or destroy everything in their path. Tornadoes have been known to carry all sorts of objects into the air before hurling them back to the ground nearby (sometimes unharmed). The picture on the right shows a car that was picked up by a tornado. They have even been known to pluck all the feathers from a chicken! Tornadoes usually only last for about 15 minutes, but in that time they can travel hundreds of kilometres. Because of their relatively small size and short life times, they are very difficult to predict.
