Tornadoes Part 2
Half Funnel - Half Dirt
This is an example of a tornado with condensation that never made it to the ground so the ground came to it. Funnels like this are capable of damage when far above the ground and are more typical in the western states and high plains where the air is drier. Very hot summer days can reduce the relative humidity in the lower layer of the atmosphere making cloud bases high. This too will cause problems for the tornado's condensation funnel to reach the ground. Chase crews from the University of Oklahoma were able to set up directly south of the tornado and take Doppler data to measure the wind speed in the funnel. Our photography position was further northeast. We did not try to get closer anticipating the funnel would move northeast. On this occasion that did not happen.
A Couple Of Classic Tornadoes
This is an example of a classic tornado that was producing a wind speed of 204 M.P.H. as measured by photogrammetric analysis of the debris in the funnel. The actual damage on the ground was only rated at F-2 with little in the path of the vortex but power poles and fences. Unfortunately, early in the life of the forming tornado a man drove into "a dust cloud" and was blow out of his vehicle resulting in serious injuries. As the tornado became better established it was obvious to all within many miles to get out of the way. The Seymour tornado, as it is known, was quite loud producing a roar at two miles away. This tornado was well documented by chase teams from the University of Oklahoma and NSSL during the Red River Valley outbreak of April 10, 1979. Two nearby cities, Vernon and Wichita Falls suffered facilities and extensive property damage that day.

Two killed as tornadoes spread across Midwest
A home in Virginia, Nebraska, was destroyed early Wednesday in storms that moved across the Midwest. The residents were home but no one was injured AGENCY, Iowa Violent weather spread across the Midwest Wednesday spawning several tornadoes, killing two people and injuring several others. A tornado ripped through the city of Agency, about 70 miles southeast of Des Moines, killing one person and injuring three others. Another person was killed about four miles outside of Coalgate, Oklahoma, when a tornado touched down there. Stan Whisman, 41, was killed and his mobile home was destroyed. His 14-year-old son was injured and is in stable condition at a local hospital, Coal County Sheriff Roy Deck said. The tornado, which was about 1/4-mile wide, cut a path about 10 miles long through the county, destroying several more homes, he said.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (CNN) A large tornado and several smaller tornadoes hit the Kansas City metro area late Sunday afternoon, destroying dozens of homes. The funnel of one tornado was reported to be 400 yards wide. Early reports indicated injuries, but there were no details available. There were no immediate reports of deaths. Local television stations reported a tornado on the ground in southern Leavenworth County, Kansas, moving toward the Missouri border. Live images from news helicopters showed significant damage to homes. Large trees were toppled and roofs were blown off. The storm system has moved east, producing tornadoes in other communities. In Missouri, the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for northern Jackson and Clay counties in the Kansas City area and for Buchanan County, about 60 miles to the north. In Kansas, warnings were issued for Linn and Miami counties in Kansas, south of the Kansas City metropolitan area, and for Labette County in southeast Kansas.

Tornados rip through Nebraska April 9, 1999

Web posted at: 7:57 a.m. EDT (1157 GMT)
(CNN) Powerful storms and tornadoes carved a path of destruction across the Midwest and Plains, destroying homes and other buildings in several states before moving east early Friday. Richard Urkoski was at work when a tornado blew the roof off his home in North Bend, Nebraska, and caved in the front walls. He later walked around the demolished house, picking up photographs off the floor. "I guess it didn't hit me until I came home and saw it," he said. A tornado struck a five-block area in the eastern Nebraska town Thursday, damaging 14 homes and leveling one that was under construction. No injuries were reported. Helga Garay's car was smashed by tree limbs outside her residence in Morse Bluff, south of North Bend.

Weather The following questions were answered by meteorologists Barbara McNaught Watson and Al Peterlin.
    Tornadoes
    Q: How are tornadoes formed?
A: Tornadoes are generally formed in a thunderstorm. Thundershowers this violent require a complex mix of environmental conditions but usually include: a) very warm, humid air, b) very cool, dry air to the west and south, c) air to the west trying to replace the warm, moist air (a front moving in), c) upper level (high in the sky) conditions that first hold down warmer air from rising and then later, a complete reverse in conditions that let the warm air rise very fast and very far, and d) an upper level wind stream to move the air away from the rising column. This sounds complicated, but it really boils down to warm, wet air driven east by a strong cold front and what we call instability. (Al Peterlin) Q: What does the funnel of a tornado look like?
A: A tornado is a rotating column of air that reaches from a thunderstorm cloud to the ground. If it doesn't reach the ground, it's called a funnel cloud because it's shaped like a funnel. The color is dark because of dust and dirt pulled up into it from the ground. (Al Peterlin) Q: How do tornadoes end?
