Web posted at: 4:44 p.m. EST (2144 GMT) In this story: CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) The South braced for more bad weather Friday after severe storms and accompanying tornadoes killed eight people in Arkansas and Tennessee Thursday night. The storms injured dozens and caused massive damage. Losses in Arkansas alone could approach $1 billion, a state official said. More than two dozen buildings were demolished in Clarksville, Tennessee, a town of nearly 90,000 people north of Nashville, which reported eight injuries but no deaths from the storms. "Downtown Clarksville looks like the proverbial war zone," said Kurt Pickering, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

Self-Help Advice Checklists
During An Emergency Steps to Follow During A Tornado If you are in a building
Go to the basement immediately. If there isn't one, crouch or lie flat (under heavy furniture) in an inner hallway or small inner room or stairwell away from windows. Stay away from large halls, arenas, shopping malls, etc. (their roofs could collapse). If you are caught outside If there is no shelter, lie down in a ditch or ravine, protecting your head. If you are driving Get out of and away from the car. It could be blown through the air, or roll over on you. Lie down as above. Last Modified: 12/30/1899 Important Notices
