Tonga History and Culture
History The Tongan Islands were probably settled from Fiji about 3,500 years ago. Tonga developed as a highly stratified society with social classes and paramount chiefs. Warfare was common as chiefs competed to expand their respective domains. In 1616 Dutch explorers became the first Europeans to visit Tonga. They were followed by the British explorer. On June 4, 1970, Tonga became completely independent of the United Kingdom. Culture Tonga has a unique cultural experience. Feasting plays a major role in the Tongan lifestyle, with Tongan feasts famous throughout the Pacific for their variety of food and gargantuan size.

TONGAN ADAPTATION AND AGED PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA
by Siosiua F. Pouvalu Lafitani
(Australian Catholic University, Signadou Campus, Canberra, Australia) In the multicultural and pluralistic structure of Australia, however, the dominant culture of Anglo-Saxon tradition, with its Federal and Westminster legal system, always finds it hard to deal with the complexities and newness of immigrants' cultures particularly if they are from non-European backgrounds. There are a number of interrelated factors, which are conducive to the rise of this problem. Among them are the limited nature of laws, and the differences in cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Further, one aspect of the problem of adaptation is due to cultural and ethnic diversity. In the case of Tongan migrants, their culture with its communal-feudal aspirations is distinct in character from the individualistic-capitalist tendencies of Anglo-Saxon tradition. Consequently, Australian law-makers and political engineers have always found it hard to fully recognise, and even appreciate, Tongan culture in its own terms. But every culture has its own quality and distinctiveness however, which, under humanitarian and democratic principles, should be taken into account of by both local and Federal Governments.

Tonga is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean , about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii . They lie south of Samoa and east of Fiji Archaeological evidence shows that the first settlers in Tonga sailed from The Santa Cruz Islands, as part of the original Austronesian -speakers' (Lapita) migration which originated out of S.E. Asia some 6000 years before present. Archaeological dating places Tonga as the oldest known site in Polynesia for the distinctive Lapita ceramic ware, at 2800-2750 years before present. The 'Lapita' people lived and sailed, traded, warred and intermarried in the islands now known as Tonga, Samoa and Fiji for 1000 years, before more explorers set off to the east to discover the Marquesas, Tahiti and eventually the rest of the Pacific Ocean islands. for this reason, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are described by anthropologists as the cradle of Polynesian culture and civilization. By the 12th Century, Tongans, and the Tongan paramount chief, the Tu'i Tonga, were known across the Pacific, from Niue to Tikopia, sparking some historians to refer to a 'Tongan Empire'. A network of interacting navigators, chiefs and adventurers might be a better term. In the 15th and again the 17th Centuries, civil war erupted. It was this context in which the first Europeans arrived, beginning with Dutch explorers

SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL KINGDOM OF TONGA – 2004
The Department of Archaeology through SFU International is offering an archaeological field school in the Kingdom of Tonga from May 3 to July 19, 2004. Students will take courses in Tongan Culture, History and Archaeology, Archaeological Field Methods, and do a fieldwork practicum on an excavation project in the northern Tongan islands of Vava’u. The field school will be taught by Professor David Burley with the excavation project being a component of his decade long study of first settlement, adaptation, and the development of ancestral Polynesian society in the Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Tonga and Its Lapita Origins
Lapita ceramics from the Kingdom of Tonga
When first described by Captain James Cook in the late 18th century, Tonga was one of the most politically complex chiefdoms in the Pacific. Tongan hegemonic expansion from the 15th century onward has led some anthropologists to broadly refer to this polity as theTongan Maritime Empire. Tonga was never colonized by a European power, and today there remains a highly traditional society in virtually all aspects of culture, from dance and song to social and political structures. It is the last surviving Polynesian monarchy, and chiefly traditions and histories are widely represented on the landscape through different forms of monumental architecture, from elaborate stone-faced tombs to large ditch and mound fortification structures. Beyond archaeological studies, students participating in the field school will have the opportunity to gain a unique and rich cultural experience.

http://tattoos.com/allen/Tongan.htm
The Tongan Tattoo by Tricia Allen The mans tattoo in Tonga was done in the same manner as the Samoan tattoo. The tool itself was a sharpened comb, made of either bone or shell. This was hafted onto a wooden handle. A second wooden tool served as a mallet, tapping the primary tool repeatedly, driving the comb into the skin. The pigment was soot collected from burning candlenut, a nut with a flameable oil. The soot was then mixed with either water or a fat until it reached the desired consistancy. The process of tatttooing in ancient Tonga was a long and painful one, particularly considering the amount of heavy black coverage in the tattoo. It was definately a mark of manhood. Interview with Aisea Toetuu For the past ten years, my life has revolved around Polynesian tattooing. During this time I have only encountered two Tongan tattooists. In fact, most Tongans today are totally unaware of the fact that Tongans at one time were as heavily tattooed as most other Polynesians. One young tattooist, Aisea Toetuu is working hard to change that. He is the first one in nearly 200 years to wear the traditional Tongan tattoo. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Aisea is that he did the tattoo himself using traditional tools. He tapped the design into his own skin and taught his young wife to tattoo so that she could complete his backside. TA: Aisea, what is your background? Where are you from?

Tonga royal palace Tonga consists of more than 150 islands spread over approximately 360,000 sq km (approximately 140,000 sq mi) of the Pacific Ocean. They are divided into three main groups—Tongatapu, Ha’apai, and Vava’u. About 40 of the islands are inhabited. With inland waters and several outlying islands, the country has a total land area of 750 sq km (290 sq mi). Tongatapu, with a total area of about 260 sq km (100 sq mi), is the largest island. The eastern islands, including Tongatapu, are coral formations, while islands of volcanic origin lie in the west. The highest point in Tonga is Mount Kao (1,030 m/3,379 ft), a volcano forming Kao Island in the Ha’apai group. Several islands have active volcanoes. Volcanic ash creates fertile soil, and the islands are well-vegetated. However, deforestation, caused by land being cleared for agriculture and settlement, is an increasing problem. Comprised of some 50 tight knit tropical islands with fringing reefs, Vava'u is an 'off the beaten track' region ideally suited for exploration by sea kayak. Our expeditions are fully catered, deluxe camping trips, with easy to moderate paddling and the option to kayak sail when the wind is in our favour. We explore tiny villages, with the opportunity to try local crafts such as weaving and we have the chance to join in on the preparation and celebration of a traditional "umu" feast. Let's not forget the outstanding snorkeling in the beautiful reefs, and for those days when you simply want to lie back and relax, there are many quiet, palm-fringed beaches to balm the soul.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
You arrive in the morning at Tonga's international airport and transfer to a domestic flight for a short flight to the Vava'u archipelago. You will witness breath-taking views of the coral islands sitting like emerald gems in the tropical Pacific below you. You will be met by your trip guides in Vava'u, and from there you'll be whisked away to a peaceful family resort - time to unwind with the sweet fragrance of frangipani, a tropical welcome. Take a swim or paddle or have a nape before dinner and your introduction to this family-run resort.

CULTURE Dance in Tonga has traditionally been an important art form, turning oral histories and folk tales into a visual form praising and honouring gods, chiefs, places and people. Weaving with the leaves of the pandanus palm is at its zenith as an art form in Tonga, and baskets and intricately worked mats produced by a variety of means are among the most beautiful in the Pacific. A reasonable body of literature has been produced in or about the archipelago in spite o f its tiny size, and some of it goes beyond oral histories and folk tales. The earliest accounts are by castaway Will Mariner and Captain Bligh after he lost command of his ship. There are also several more recent collections of poetry and prose by contemporary writers. Tongan food is delightful, and consists mostly of root vegetables such as taro and sweet potato, coconut products, fresh fruit, roasted suckling pig, chicken, corned beef, fish and shellfish. The delicious dishes made from these ingredients are an excuse in themselves to visit the islands. The traditional Tongan feast gets cooked in an underground oven, umu , common throughout Polynesia. The most refreshing drink available is coconut juice, and the locally grown Royal Coffee is excellent if you're after a caffeine hit. Beer is popular, and of course kava (
