Solomon Islands Tokelau Tonga Tuvalu Vanuatu Geography Tokelau is a small, isolated, non-self governing territory under the administration of New Zealand since 1925. It consists of three low-lying atolls just south of the equator with a land area of 12 square kilometres fragm en ted into 127 islets. It comprises of three atolls, Fakaofo, Nukunonu and Atafu. The total population has stabilised at about 1500 and is concentrated on one or two islands in each atoll. Emigration to New Zealand provides the major outlet preventing over-population. About 4,500 Tokelauans live abroad.
Economic Status
Economic growth as measured by increases in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not applicable in Tokelau, either as an indicator or development of the productive capacity of the economy. Tokelau is locked into dependency on budgetary assistance, aid and remittances to maintain current lifestyles. With the limited resource-base the generation of sufficient investment revenue to fulfil present aspirations of the people is improbable. Potential income generating opportunities are in greater commercialisation of the offshore fishery and possibly aquaculture, but revenue from this and other small enterprises such as the manufacture of handicrafts, can only ever provide supplementary income. There is potential for limited tourism development, but there is no policy to encourage tourism in Tokelau.

They are still a territory of New Zealand administered under the Tokelau Act of , as amended from to , and defence is the responsibility of New Zealand . Formerly known as the Union Islands, Tokelau is a small island group located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It is a territory of New Zealand. With an area of about 5 square miles and a population of about 1,500, Tokelau is comprised of three small atolls, Atafu, Nukunono and Fakaofo.
