JANE'S TOKELAU ISLANDS PAGE This Web site is intended to provide a brief outline of the recent history as well as the geography of the Tokelau Islands. Swains Island has been included as it is geographically, if not politically, part of the Tokelau Group. Outline map of the Tokelau Islands The picture above was taken on the island of Butaritari (Republic of Kiribati) in about 1890 and is part of the Robert Louis Stevenson collection. On the left is Maka (with the cane), Mrs. Mary Maka along with Kanoa and Mrs. Maria Kanoa, Hawaiian missionaries of the American Board of Missions, Honolulu. Of particular interest to the people of Tokelau and the many friends of Tokelau is Maka whose writings have documented for all time the atrocities committed by the Peruvian blackbirders on the innocent people of Tokelau. A TOKELAU POEM
The following poem is about the Tokelau Islands, their history, geography, unique culture and lifestyle.
PRESENTED BY JANE RESTURE A Tokelau Poem
I think about Tokelau from time to time Those distant specks in the sea Unknown by most and loved by a few Unique and beautiful and free. And when I think of Tokelau And I do know for sure That I think about All those things you had to endure. When the blackbirders came, they took away All the young men to a land far away Never to return and forever to yearn About home and returning one day. A population so pure became unsure Of who they were or were meant to be The links with the past broken for all time Knowing not what was yours and mine. But the people are proud of themselves And who they are And Tokelau will always remain Their shining star.
I think about Tokelau from time to time Those distant specks in the sea Unknown by most and loved by a few Unique and beautiful and free. Poem by Jane Resture

    Background
Originally settled by Polynesian emigrants from surrounding island groups, the Tokelau Islands were made a British protectorate in 1889. They were transferred to New Zealand administration in 1925. According to a UN report, these low-lying islands will disappear in the 21st century, if global warming continues to raise sea levels. Location Oceania, a group of three islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. Coordinates 9 00 S, 172 00 W Area 10 sq km Geography Tokelau consists of three atolls, each with a lagoon surrounded by a number of reef-bound islets of varying length and rising to over three meters above sea level. Population 1,445 (July 2001 est.) The principal sources of revenue come from sales of copra, postage stamps, souvenir coins, and handicrafts. Money is also remitted to families from relatives in New Zealand. Industries small-scale enterprises for copra production, woodworking, plaited craft goods; stamps, coins; fishing.
