GEOGRAPHY Ghana is located on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea only a few degrees north of the Equator. Half of the country lies less than 152 meters (500 ft.) above sea level, and the highest point is 883 meters (2,900 ft.). The 537-kilometer (334-mi.) coastline is mostly a low, sandy shore backed by plains and scrub and intersected by several rivers and streams, most of which are navigable only by canoe. A tropical rain forest belt, broken by heavily forested hills and many streams and rivers, extends northward from the shore, near the Cote d'Ivoire frontier. This area, known as the "Ashanti," produces most of the country's cocoa, minerals, and timber. North of this belt, the country varies from 91 to 396 meters (300-1,300 ft.) above sea level and is covered by low bush, parklike savanna, and grassy plains.

    Geography of Ghana
World Facts Index Ghana Map of Ghana Ghana, which lies in the center of the West African coast, shares borders with the three French-speaking nations of Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Togo to the east, and Burkina Faso (Burkina, formerly Upper Volta) to the north. To the south are the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. With a total area of 238,533 square kilometers, Ghana is about the size of Britain. Its southernmost coast at Cape Three Points is 4° 30' north of the equator. From here, the country extends inland for some 670 kilometers to about 11° north. The distance across the widest part, between longitude 1° 12' east and longitude 3° 15' west, measures about 560 kilometers. The Greenwich Meridian, which passes through London, also traverses the eastern part of Ghana at Tema. Geographical Regions Ghana is characterized in general by low physical relief. Indeed, the Precambrian rock system that underlies most of the nation has been worn down by erosion almost to a plain. The highest elevation in Ghana, Mount Afadjato in the Akwapim-Togo Ranges, rises only 880 meters above sea level. There are, nonetheless, five distinct geographical regions. Low plains stretch across the southern part of the country. To their north lie three regionsthe Ashanti Uplands, the Akwapim-Togo Ranges, and the Volta Basin. The fifth region, the high plains, occupies the northern and northwestern sector of the country. Like most West African countries, Ghana has no natural harbors. Because strong surf pounds the shoreline, two artificial harbors were built at Takoradi and Tema (the latter completed in 1961) to accommodate Ghana's shipping needs.

    Benin Africa
GEOGRAPHY Benin, a narrow, north-south strip of land in West Africa, lies between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer. Benin’s latitude ranges from 6 30N to 12 30N and its longitude from 1 E to 3 40E. Benin is bounded by Togo to the west, Burkina Faso and Niger to the north, Nigeria to the east, and the Bight of Benin to the south. With an area of 112,622 square kilometers, roughly the size of Pennsylvania, Benin extends from the Niger River in the north to the Atlantic Ocean in the south, a distance of 700 km. (about 500 mi.). Although the coastline measures 121 km. (about 80 mi.), the country measures about 325 km. (about 215 mi.) at its widest point. It is one of the smaller countries in West Africa: eight times smaller than Nigeria, its neighbor to the east. It is, however, twice as large as Togo, its neighbor to the west. A relief map of Benin shows that it has little variation in elevation (average elevation 200 meters). Benin’s climate is hot and humid. Annual rainfall in the coastal area averages 36 cm. (14 in.), not particularly high for coastal West Africa. Benin has two rainy and two dry seasons. The principal rainy season is from April to late July, with a shorter less intense rainy period from late September to November. The main dry season is from December to April, with a short cooler dry season from late July to early September. Temperatures and humidity are high along the tropical coast. In Cotonou, the average maximum temperature is 31

togolese republic This thin strip of land (the coastline is only 50 kilometres long) used to be a favourite tourism spot some years ago. Known for its deserted beaches, brilliant nightlife, forests, and mosaic cultural combinations, it attracted travellers from around the world. Due to political unrest in the early 1990's, foreign investors and tourists fled, reducing the number of visitors to a trickle. The country is relatively safe today and very affordable. Due to its size, it is possible to explore this tiny country in a week. Togo is the land of voodoo, fetish markets, friendly people and dancing rituals. Hiking in the Kpalime, searching for butterflies and driving through a rather nice landscape are amongst some of the activities in Togo. Geography The tiny country of Togo is just less than 600 kilometres long and between 50 and 150 kilometres wide. It is neighboured by Ghana on the west, Burkina Faso on the north and Benin on its eastern side. The Atlantic Ocean borders the 50km coastline in the south. There is a range of hills running from the south-west across to the country to the north-east. The northern territory consists of gently rolling savannah plains irrigated by the River Oti, grasslands, mountains and waterfalls while the south consists of a plateau and low-lying coastal plains covered with palm tree-lined beaches, marshy areas and lagoons.
