by Philip de Barros Archaeological Research in the Oti River Valley View of an Oti River canoe crossing; recent freshwater oyster shell midden in left foreground>> In December 1999 I led a five-week survey expedition to the Oti River Valley in Northern Togo, West Africa, a region never before studied archaeologically. Togo is a small, essentially agricultural country of 4+ million people, no larger than the state of West Virginia. Developing archaeological knowledge and understanding about past human adaptations and settlement during the ceramic Late Stone Age and early Iron Age (ca. 4000 BC-AD 1000) in the Oti River Valley of Northern Togo was the first goal of the research project. The second was studying the origins of early farming in this part of savanna West Africa, most commonly associated with the term Kintampo complex in nearby Ghana (see map), a culture that flourished during the second millennium bc. Some other, more short-term goals included locating actual Kintampo sites and investigating the nature and chronology of freshwater oyster shell exploitation first described by Gehrts in 1915.

Introduction to Anlo-Ewe
Culture and History By C. K. Ladzekpo
Brief History Of Anlo-Ewe People
I am an Anlo-Ewe , born and raised on the island of Anyako, the largest among a cluster of island settlements surrounded by the salty waters of the Keta lagoon. These island settlements are collectively known as a major island group of the Anlo-Ewe traditional state. A major coastal group is at south of the Keta lagoon along the shores of the Atlantic ocean and a major inland group is at the north of the lagoon. Anlo-Ewe traditional state is presently among a political union of distinct traditional states known as the republic of Ghana. The political union was created by the British government during the period of the historic Western European partitioning of Africa. It was originally called the Gold Coast and was renamed Ghana when it achieved self government on March 6, 1957. Anlo-Ewe land occupies the south eastern corner of the modern republic in an administrative region known as the volta region According to oral history, the

Togo - Four glorious days
After battling your way through the crowds of money changers, hustlers and helpers on the border between Ghana One place where Eyadema has surpassed Mobutu, is in his survival skills. He rode out the wave of democratic protests which swept across africa in the early nineties by simply killing hundreds of opponents. In the post cold-war world, Western countries have had less need for loyal dictators of tiny African nations and less willing to take the PR hit of financing them. Therefore Eyadema has had to turn elsewhere for funds. To Libya. While we were in Lome, there was a massive, Libyan funded refurbishment of the city's hotels and conference centres going on, in preparation for the upcoming conference of the Organisation of African Unity. Gaddafi has for some time been using Libya's oil money to bail out broke African rulers in return for their support of his project to create an 'African union'.

On the Line was a millennium project that explored and celebrated the lives of people living in the eight countries of the zero degree meridian line: Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria, Spain, France, and the United Kingdom. A partnership of Channel 4, WWF-UK, and Oxfam GB, On the Line aimed to make the millennium more than just a moment in time, and to add an international dimension to the year 2000 celebrations. On the Line worked with individuals, schools and community groups, using media, music, arts and formal education to explore environmental and developmental issues. Now that the On the Line project has come to an end, most of the content from this website has been transferred to Oxfam's Cool Planet website. TOGO

CULTURE Like other African peoples, the Togolese have a strong oral tradition. Little has been done, however, to promote vernacular literature. Before independence there were a few Togolese writers using French. Since independence, regional (especially Ewe) literature emerged with the works of several novelists and playwrights. Founded in 1967, the African Ballet of Togo has aimed at popularizing the finest traditional dances.
