The Dominicans in Trinidad and Tobago History of the Dominicans in Trinidad and Tobago The Dominicans (Order of Preachers) are a Catholic religious order founded by Dominic de Guzman in 1215. The history of the Dominican friars here goes as back as far as 1513, when the first missionaries – two Spanish Dominicans, Francisco de Cordova and Juan Graces – set foot in Trinidad. They were also to be the first Christian martyrs, betrayed by the Spanish soldiers who came with them. After a lapse of 350 years, the Dominican friars returned to Trinidad. They came in 1864, a party of six friars from the French province of Lyons, who had been requested by the newly appointed Archbishop Gonin, himself a French Domincan. On their arrival, they found four secular priests who had charge of the parish of Port of Spain. Archbishop Gonin and the six Dominicans took ip residence in the Cathedral presbytery, then situated in George Street. Due to its cramped size, the decision was made to build a new presbytery and priory nearer to the cathedral. This site was very difficult, being often under sea and regularly used as a dumping ground, so the construction took a considerable time. Eventually, on 16 th February 1880, the completed building was blessed. Built in the shape of an H, and catching the prevailing winds, it could accommodate twenty persons, and included a large refectory and oratory. A statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception adorned the center of the garden (this statue can be seen today in the compound of Nelson Street Girls’ School). This cathedral presbytery was home to every Dominican who worked in Trinidad and Tobago, and became a byword for hospitality in the wider region.

The Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies (ATTIC) was first formed during the mid-sixties. ATTIC was registered as a company with limited guarantee in August 1966, in accordance with the Companies Ordinance Chapter 31 No.1. Government's declared policy on the localisation of the financial sector was a major determinant in its formation. However, the slow emergence of local insurance companies caused some degree of initial dormancy in the Association's activities. The mid to late seventies saw a marked increase in localisation activities and a rejuvenation of ATTIC which, by that time, had joined forces with the Life Office Association and the Local Rating Committee. While ATTIC members have looked to the Insurance Act, 1980, as the regulatory guide to doing insurance business, elements of self-regulation have been developing as a Code of Ethics and Statements of Standard Insurance Practice have been implemented. In addition, the executive has approved a framework of Strategic Planning out of which have emerged specific and critical strategic goals and actions. Some of these have been implemented; the others will be during the year 2000 and beyond.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF IARU REGION 2
How does IARU Region 2 emerge?
The International Amateur Radio Union - IARU was founded in 1925 and over many years the organization served the worldwide interests of amateur radio. Then, in 1950, Member Societies in Europe and Africa, that is in Region I of the International Telecommunication Union Region - ITU - decided to form a regional organization called IARU Region I. Thereafter in 1975 the IARU Constitution itself was amended in order to recognize and incorporate into the world organization the existence of IARU regional organizations according to ITU division of the world into three administrative regions. Meanwhile, a group of IARU Member Societies in the Americas decided to also form a regional amateur radio organization on this Continent. Thus, on April 16, 1964, the First Pan-American Congress of Amateur Radio, organized by the Liga Mexicana de Radioexperimentadores is held in Mexico City. 15 countries of the Americas participated in this First General Assembly of Delegates who decided to create the Inter American Amateur Radio Union (IARU).

CITIZENS FOR A BETTER TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO [CBTT] was formed on August 1, 1993 in order to help people - both here and abroad - live a better quality of life. It is a legally registered non-profit organization which embraces citizens of every creed, race and religion. CBTT, which is affiliated to CITIZENS FOR A BETTER LIFE (CBL), believes that a united people will go a long way in helping to solve the many problems people face today. Members work hard on a voluntary basis to help the disadvantaged in society because they are deeply concerned for those who are poorly clothed and fed as well as those who need living space, jobs and the other essentials of life. One of the major aims of the group is to prevent the growth of drug abuse. Volunteers attached to CBTT lecture on a regular basis to both young and old on the physical, social and legal consequences of drug abuse. As a result of this, another group known as PARENTS AGAINST DRUGS [PAD], the first group of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago, was formed in conjunction with CBTT.

cca Caribbean Contemporary Arts (CCA) was established to provide a space and structure in response to the social, political and cultural concerns of the many peoples who comprise the Caribbean Basin. The complex task of providing a medium for expression to a population that traces its influences to a number of continents, cultures, traditions and histories is important, both regionally and internationally. We believe that it is necessary for these new expressions of acculturation to first find recognition from the 'inside'. CCA is an international arts organisation that works with contemporary visual artists, curators, writers, historians and art educators from the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diaspora to exhibit, publish and document our region's art practice, influences and ideas. CCA maintains an active interest in work, which investigates and includes a diversity of subjects within contemporary art practice, art theory, art history and art criticism. Mission CCA is an autonomous regional developmental arts organisation which initiates exchanges and programmes that bridge the many island states and the Latin American rim that make up the Caribbean region. These exchanges reinforce the unique culture of the region as our most under utilised developmental tool.

The islands cover an area of approximately 5,148 square kilometres with a population of about 1.3 million people. A former British colony, Trinidad and Tobago declared Independence in 1962, and in 1976 became a fully-fledged Republic within the Commonwealth. The small village of Toco lies at the north-eastern tip of Trinidad, at the point where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. It is therefore the closest point to the sister island of Tobago, which lies some 35 km to the north-east. Galera Point where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean
    Economy
Today, the Toco region is among the poorest in the country. Unemployment is estimated to be in the 55-60% range, with the public sector providing the only secure employment - through the teaching service, Ministry of Works or the Regional Corporation. Toco still has a smattering of small grocery shops and bars, but all major retail activity now takes place in the town of Sangre Grande, some 40 km from Toco. MATURA TO MATELOT NETWORK The Future nature and heritage tourism are excellent and the community is actively pursuing opportunities in this area.
