History of Art of Trinidad and Tobago
    Geoffrey MacLean, Art Historian
The unique, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural mix of Trinidad and Tobago has linked artistic expressions and iconography not only of Africa and Europe, but also of India, China, and the Middle East. In colonial times, imperial arrangements, both political and social, inhibited the growth of indigenous forms of artistic expression. Privileged West Indian sons were often educated in Europe, and European officials governed the islands. Paradoxically, it was this external control that facilitated the first formal emergence of a Trinidadian painter, Michel Jean Cazabon Cazabon was born in Trinidad, the son of Martiniquan free coloreds (a name once given to peoples of mixed race in the period after emancipation). He studied in Paris under Paul Delaroche and returned to Trinidad around 1850. Following closely the traditions of the French Landscape School, Cazabon depicted the islands and their people in watercolors and oils until his death in 1888. With the exception of the work of Theodora Walter (1869-1959), daughter of a Trinidadian mother and grand-daughter of English watercolorist Theodore Walter, there are few examples of Trinidadian art from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Walter's botanical paintings and simple landscapes are all that remain from that period.

    introduction
meetings eligibility ... the silver club BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CARIBBEAN SHIPPING ASSOCIATION By Michael S. L. Jarrett The need to establish an effective, broad-based Association to monitor, discuss and share information in support of the growth and development of shipping in the Caribbean was accepted in the 1960s when shipping interests realized that there was much to learn and emulate from the initiatives and strategies employed in neighbouring Caribbean territories to solve similar problems. Specifically, the revolutionary achievements by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) in successfully negotiating with hostile unions for the mechanization of the Port of Kingston started a process where port interests across the Caribbean met to exchange ideas. Trinidad, Barbados and Bermuda were experiencing similar problems with their trade unions and delegations from the national shipping associations of these countries visited Jamaica within a short time of each other to discuss and learn from the achievements of the Shipping Association of Jamaica. These discussions forged a relationship between these national associations and in 1969 representatives from five national associations met in Port of Spain for an informal meeting to discuss labour contracts, labour practices and other problems affecting the shipping industry. The meeting was so useful, the group decided to meet again in six months.

Brief administrative history The International Sanitary Bureau, precursor of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, was established by the First General International Sanitary Convention of the American Republics held in Washington, DC., in 1902. The Bureau, "according to the resolutions adopted", consisted of a board of seven health officials, residing in five countries, who were assigned the responsibility for the receipt and distribution of information on health conditions in the American Republics and to formulate sanitary agreements and regulations so that quarantine requirements would be reduced to a minimum in respect of cholera, yellow fever, bubonic plaque, smallpox and "any other serious pestilential outbreak". These functions and responsibilities were adopted both by the Second Conference of American States (1901) and by the First General International Sanitary Convention.
Five other international sanitary conferences held in the Americas between 1902 and 1920 approved resolutions to the effect that the Bureau would undertake the investigation of outbreaks of communicable diseases, the facilitation of commerce through the improvement of sanitary conditions in the sea-ports of the American Republics, through sewage disposal, drainage of the soil, and the destruction of mosquitoes and other vermin. However, resources available at the time in terms of staff, office space, travel and other expenses were not appropriate to allow compliance with these Conference resolutions.

    History of the Tournament
It was felt that there was no better way of doing this than by staging a seven's tournament involving the widest participation from both local and foreign clubs. The concept was a resounding success and, with foreign participation growing each year, the event has become established as the Caribbean's premier rugby attraction. The Trinidad Enthusiasts RFC, initially in the person of "pint-sized" Gavin Clark, and latterly in the person of 'over-sized" Brian Stollmeyer, took up the challenge, further sponsored the airfares and agreed to organise a Seven-A-Side Tournament. The General Manager of LIATin 1986 (the regional domestic airline) Melvin Black, offered to sponsor a Caribbean Tournament by way of subsidised fares. So in 1987 the first LIAT Sevens was contested by local Trinidad Clubs and teams from four other Caribbean islands. Since then the tournament has been played annually over the first weekend in December with teams coming from progressively further afield. The Reivers, a representative team from the Borders of Scotland, started the influx of "foreign" teams in 1989 and have been coming ever since, even in recent years when the demands of the new "professional" game have made team selection anything but an easy task.

Among the principal interests of IACA are Caribbean prehistoric and historic period archaeology, terrestrial and marine archaeology, public education in archaeology, the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, the ethics of archaeological inquiry and the protection of sites and cultural objects of the past. Invariably attended by between 200 and 250 delegates from the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America, IACA biennial conferences, are held in Caribbean countries nominated by the IACA Board and membership.
