These joints are of a wide variety of sizes ranging from very small ones in the middle ear to very big ones in the hips. They are also of different types and are grouped according to motion; the most common are ball and socket, hinge, pivot, gliding, and saddle. One of the smallest joints is the temporal-mandibular joint in the head. It is where the jaw bone connects with the skull just in front of the ear. It is an easy one to find; simply place your fingertip to this area and then open and close your mouth. You will easily feel it moving under your finger. This joint is subject to inflammation, arthritis, sprain, contusion, and fracture just like many other joints in the body. I did not read the original post on this thread, but I hope Paul will take all advice here with a grain of salt (including mine!). As far as TMJ, I can tell you from my own experience that it is incurable and that it is progressive and no chiropractor or doctor can alter this. They can alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with it. The person you should see for this is a highly respected TMJ specialist, not a chiropractor. I did this and it helped. Is it possible that your problems are due to an embouchure breakdown, including too much pressure and that what you need to do is start over with a good teacher who will not let you develop bad habits? To assume your problems are a major medical problem seems extreme to me, but again I didn't get in on this from the beginning. Just a suggestion and not meant to start a flaming thread on chiropractors! It is about time that ''TMJ'' was clarified and cleared up, as many hornist are under misconceptions about it.

Sabbatini Introduction Making decisions in the diagnosis of diseases may be both simple, as in the case of ephemeral (temporary) pain, being characteristic of hyperemias (such as pulpal), and complex, when the diagnostic speculations involve referred pain. Often the dentist is faced with making difficult decisions for the diagnosis of pain problems, such as in the case of pain is the temporomandibular joint region. Diagnosis can be difficult for a number of reasons, it may depend on the analysis of sources of a very different nature, plus the fact there is a lack of standardization as to the medical terms and definitions, and in addition to the fact that mutual agreement and opinions do not always exist among specialists, often making the decision complex in Medicine and Dentistry (2,3,8). Also, it is important to recognize the difference between learning factual information regarding a number of diseases and applying this knowledge to the clinical situation (7). TMJ Plus is a computerized program which originated from this motivation. It aims at helping dental professionals in the diagnosis of TMJ diseases and/or conditions, in a way not usually found in the dental literature.

The Center maintains a TMJ Clinic for patients, which is open several days per week in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This Clinic is directed by Dr. Leslie Heffez, Professor and Head of Oral Surgery, and by Dr. Charles S. Greene, Professor and Director of Orofacial Pain Studies. Patients are referred to the TMJ Clinic from a variety of local and regional practitioners of both medicine and dentistry. Many of these patients are seeking second opinions or consultations about their diagnosis and treatment, while others come here directly for treatment. In some cases, the patients turn out to not have any TM disorder, but instead they have some other orofacial pain problem; these patients are then referred to appropriate dentists or physicians for management of these other conditions.
