The material does not necessarily reflect the current or past opinions of subscribers or other professionals and should not be used for purposes of diagnosis or treatment without consulting appropriate literature sources and informed professional opinion." Although no specific data exists regarding the social impact of temporamandibular joint disorders, TMJ is estimated to account for as much as thirty billion dollars a year in lost productivity. Americans lose 550 million work days every year due to symptoms associated with TMJ, with facial pain and headache being the most common complaints. Accordingly, analgesics directed at these symptoms are among the top selling over the counter medicines in our society. Despite the lack specific data regarding the incidence of these disorders, much has been learned over the last decade regarding specific pathology and therapy. Generic terms such as TMJ Syndrome, or Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome (MPD Syndrome) are generally outdated. It is now possible to differentiate between true muscular disorders and those disorders with pathological changes of the temporomandibular joint.

What Is The Temporomandibular Joint?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint that slides and rotates just in front of your ear, consisting of the temporal bone (side and base of the skull) and the mandible (lower jaw). Mastication (chewing) muscles connect the lower jaw to the skull, allowing you to move your jaw forward, sideways, and open and close.
The joint works properly when the lower jaw and its joint (both the right and left) are synchronized during movement. Temporo-mandibular Disorder (TMD) may occur when the jaw twists during opening, closing or side-motion movements. These movements affect the jaw joint and the muscles that control chewing. What is Temporomandibular Disorder?
TMD describes a variety of conditions that affect jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Symptoms may occur on one or both sides of the face, head or jaw, or develop after an injury. TMD affects more than twice as many women than men and is the most common non-dental related chronic orofacial pain. What causes TMD?

Offers information on DCS, which is the centuriesold bad habit of compressing and grinding one's teeth. Diagnosis, management, and how treatment can relieve temporomandibular joint (tmj) problems and pain.

WELCOME
What is the point of this website? During the thirty years I have practiced as a restorative dentist, I have been fascinated by the habit of some individuals to grind and clench their teeth. This phenomenon is peculiar for several reasons:
  • The flattened teeth of our ancestors indicate that compression and grinding of teeth has existed for centuries. Even today, it is of epidemic proportions because in most cases it is not diagnosed, not well understood, and consequently not treated properly.
Thirty percent of the affected patients are not aware that they are damaging themselves, as this habit tends to be subconscious.
Compression and grinding of one's teeth simultaneously applies undue pressure to the bone supporting the teeth and to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), where the mandible (lower jaw) hinges with the skull. In my opinion, this is responsible for the majority of problems related to this joint.
The physical signs of compression are not recognized by the majority of the dental profession. A patient may be chronically damaging him or herself by compressing and grinding, but may nonetheless be quite comfortable. If this is the case, the signs of damage should be recognized when the patient has his or her teeth cleaned. The problem is that sixty-five percent of the dental profession does not recognize these signs and does not understand the implications.

What is TMJ Syndrome? Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, also called myofascial pain dysfunction, is a general term for a number of muscle, joint, and nerve symptoms that seem to be related to disturbance or disease in the temporomandibular joint. TMJ syndrome is a fairly common condition, perhaps because so many of the symptoms seem to be at least partly stress-related, and modern life is notably characterized by innumerable stressors. What is the temporomandibular joint? The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw (the mandible) to the skull. bodyOffer(21956) What are the symptoms of TMJ syndrome? TMJ syndrome can produce a wide array of seemingly unrelated symptoms: jaw pain chronic generalized facial pain (either a sharp pain or a dull ache) headaches earaches a loud roaring in the ears clicking or popping sounds when the jaw is opened difficulty in opening and closing the jaw difficulty, discomfort, or pain when biting or chewing

Introduction It is estimated that approximately 70 to 90% of patients with facial pain have either a primary or secondary muscle disorder and that pain in these patients can be alleviated with biofeedback(1). Facial pain usually results from acute overstretching of muscles, whiplash, muscle fatigue, oral surgery or immobilization of muscle or as a consequence of a muscle-bracing oral habit, such as clenching and/or grinding and malocclusion. The pain experienced most often is described as a dull deep ache that is usually constant and active for months, sometimes for years. The pain is usually more intense on awakening, and is frequently unilateral or one-sided. Often, clicking or popping sounds originating from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area are reported. Mandibular movements are limited because patients have difficulty opening their mouth. The jaw often deviates to the affected and painful side of the face. The pain may radiate into the temple muscles and down into the sternocleidomastoid muscle and splenius capitis muscles as well as to the zygomatic process.

Click here for some simple jaw exercises Temporomandibular disorder or TMD is a broad term referring to problems with the jaws and their functioning. This system is very complex and problems are caused by a variety of factors. This information sheet will attempt to give you a general overview of TMD so you can better understand the problems you have been having. The Temporomandibular System The temporomandibular system consists of three basic components; the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, the teeth, and the neuromuscular system. TMJ This is the term often used to describe TMD, but it specifically refers to the joints that work your lower jaw, or mandible. These two joints are found just in front of the ears. Their close proximity to the ear is why some patients experience ear symptoms and can often hear the joint pop or crack. These two joints never act alone, that is, when your jaw functions, both joints will be working. There is a small cartilage disc between your lower jaw and skull in the joint. Some TMD problems are caused by dysfunction of this disk. When healthy it acts as a sort of "shock absorber" for the joint. Teeth The teeth are like the third leg of a tripod, the TMJs being the other two legs. The alignment of your bite and the functioning of the TMJs are intimately connected. Problems in any of the three areas may effect the other two.

Do you have severe pain?
Headaches, sinus or neck pain?
Have you tried everything and
you still have jaw pain headaches...
If you've tried everything and you still suffer from chronic headaches,
neck aches, earaches, shoulder and back pain, and the cause of these
symptoms has not been found, there may be a good solution to your problems.
Most people do not realize that these seemingly unrelated problems are often associated with jaw joint problems. But those people who have been successfully treated for TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) problems have put the general discomfort and aching pain out of their lives. The TMJ is a specialized hinge structure near the ear that allows the mouth to open and close and coordinates chewing.
Other common symptoms are:
Dizziness
