What is the Temporomandibular Joint?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint that slides and rotates just in front of your ear, consisting of the temporal bone (side and base of the skull) and the mandible (lower jaw). Mastication (chewing) muscles connect the lower jaw to the skull, allowing you to move your jaw forward, sideways, and open and close. The joint works properly when the lower jaw (mandible) and its joint (both the right and left) are synchronized during movement. Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) may occur when the jaw twists during opening, closing or side-motion movements. These movements affect the jaw joint and the muscles that control chewing. What is Temporomandibular Disorder?
TMD describes a variety of conditions that affect jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Symptoms may occur on one or both sides of the face, head or jaw, or develop after an injury. TMD affects more than twice as many women than men and is the most common non-dental related chronic orofacial pain. What causes TMD?

TMJ DISEASE
The joint disease that one in five have and don't know it.
Do you have it?
See the checklist Below
What is this thing called "TMJoint" Dysfunction that we see described in more and more newspapers and magazines? Is it a rare, newly discovered disease that will probably never affect us? In actuality, about one in five have some form of this syndrome. The Temporomandibular Joint is right in front of each ear and is where the lower jaw (mandible)hinges to the skull (temporal) bone on each side. The relationship of the teeth in closing (occlusion) will determine the position of the TMJoints and the muscles attached therein. This disease entity is often misdiagnosed because it is frequently accompanied by referred pain to the ear, head, neck, face, and/or back. Although other symptoms such as clicking in the joints, tinnitus(ringing in the ears), dizziness, or hearing loss may also be present, structural evaluation should be employed to diagnose this syndrome conclusively. Symptoms should be used as clues. Structural analysis should be used to confirm your suspicions. Anyone exhibiting one or more of the a aforementioned symptoms may utilize the following checklist to determine the need for advice from a dentist, concerning a TMJoint problem.

TMJ Implants- A Consumer Informational Update
April 2001 Dear Reader: This is an updated introductory letter from the current 1999 TMJ implant consumer handbook entitled, "TMJ Implants - A Consumer Informational Update 1999." While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the process of updating the handbook, we want to provide you with some new updates and the current information. Background: The FDA's regulation of new medical devices entering the market began with the 1976 Medical Device Amendments. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) implants are pre-Amendments devices, meaning they entered the market before 1976. This allowed sale of TMJ implants marketed before May 28, 1976 to continue without demonstrating safety and effectiveness. These devices introduced after 1976 required FDA clearance. In 1993, the Dental Products Advisory Panel reclassified them into Class III - the highest risk category. This means that all manufacturers of TMJ devices would be required to submit a Premarket Approval Application (PMA) - demonstrating safety and effectiveness - when called for by the FDA. On December 30, 1998, the FDA called for PMAs from all manufacturers of TMJ implants.

73. TMJ Syndrome
What is tmj? It is estimated that 10 million Americans suffer from tmj syndrome, a condition in which the temporomandibular joint does not function properly.
http://www.coolnurse.com/tmj.htm
What is TMJ? (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome) More Causes Feel Your Joint You can locate the temporomandibular joint by placing your finger on that triangle of skin in the front of your ear and then moving it a tiny bit forward. You should be able to feel a small depression between bones there. Now open and close your mouth a few times to feel the motion of the joint. If this hurts, you most likely have TMJ dysfunction. Don't worry, if the pain there is bad, you may want to consult your dentist. There Is Help For TMJ Syndrome Luckily, there are a few things you can do to alleviate the pain and possibly take care of it altogether without seeing a doctor. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommends trying some simple remedies. To reduce the amount of wear and injury to the joint, chew evenly (left vs. right); stop chewing gum; avoid hard chewy foods, and stop clenching, or grinding your teeth. To aid the healing processes, apply a heating pad (or some form of heat) for 20 minutes at least twice a day. Two aspirin or ibuprofen tablets can help reduce inflammation. Don't use them everyday; if the pain is that bad

Observable signs include: 1 - Locking or clicking of one or both lower jaw joints (TMJ), with or without pain.
2 - Limited jaw opening.
3 - Facial asymmetry with one side puffier than the other.
4 - A protruded lower jaw - this compromises the airway so the head is held forward (the forward head posture strains the cervical vertebrae - the thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae must compensate, and now either one shoulder or hip is lower than the other). The primary symptoms include: 1 - An intolerance of light, requiring sunglasses during the day, and difficult driving at night.

You are in: Back, Ribs, Neck, and Head Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome Overview Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or TMJ joint disorders are medical problems related to the jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull (temporal bone) under your ear. Certain facial muscles control chewing. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and popping sounds when you bite. The TMJ is comprised of muscles, blood supplies, nerves, and bones. You have 2 TMJs, one on each side of your jaw.

Do you have severe pain?
Headaches, sinus or neck pain?
Have you tried everything and
you still have jaw pain headaches...
If you've tried everything and you still suffer from chronic headaches,
neck aches, earaches, shoulder and back pain, and the cause of these
symptoms has not been found, there may be a good solution to your problems.
Most people do not realize that these seemingly unrelated problems are often associated with jaw joint problems. But those people who have been successfully treated for TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) problems have put the general discomfort and aching pain out of their lives. The TMJ is a specialized hinge structure near the ear that allows the mouth to open and close and coordinates chewing.
Other common symptoms are:
Dizziness
