Our Mission
I CCMO is a society of health care professionals with a common interest in the etiologic role of orthopedic deformities as related to the various symptoms of head and neck pain and dysfunction. The primary objective of the College is the alleviation of the widespread human suffering of those afflicted with the varied symptomatology of head and neck pain and dysfunction (TMD). To this end, the members of the College aim to apply the highest level of scientific integrity and objectivity in their clinical practice and in research for the resolution of these problems.
ICCMO's Foundation
ICCMO was founded in 1979 by Dr. Bernard Jankelson, a pioneer in neuromuscular dentistry. He envisioned dentistry as involving the total physiology of the head and neck, and received particular attention for his efforts to relate the lower jaw to the cranium in three dimensions and to quantify data. His integrity and dedication to objectivity still provide inspiration and leadership to the pursuit of knowledge and the alleviation of pain for all mankind.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders About ten million Americans who suffer from such seemingly disparate symptoms as headaches, earaches, tenderness of the jaw muscles, or dull, aching facial pain often share a common problem. They all suffer from what has come to be known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. These disorders can have a variety of causes and are believed to result when the chewing muscles and jaw joints do not work together correctly. In many cases, TMJ disorders can be successfully treated. HOW THE CHEWING MUSCLES AND JAW JOINTS WORK
The structures that make it possible to open and close the mouth are very specialized and work together when you chew, speak and swallow. These structures include the muscles, ligaments, bones and joints of the jaw. Five pairs of muscles allow you to open and close your mouth. They also control forward, backward, and side-to-side movements of the lower jaw. Also involved in these movements are the temporomandibular joints. Each of these important joints has two sections, connected by a disk, that make possible the hinge and gliding actions needed to open the mouth widely (Fig. 1). Figure 1 Position of TMJ with mouth closed Position of TMJ with mouth open wide Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, bones, and joints from working together properly may result in a TMJ disorder.

I am a Vietnam Era U. S. Air Force Veteran who served from 1962 to 1966 under the maiden name of Larmore. After completing Basic Training at Lackland (January 1963), I was stationed with the 3201st Air Base Wing WAF Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida. In 1965 I was selected as the Fire Prevention Queen for the base. My last assignment before receiving a medical discharge was in Air Operations at Eglin. Prior to entry into the Air Force, I graduated from Samuel Ready Girls' School, Baltimore, MD. Before that I attended Wicomico County Public Schools including Nanticoke Elementary School from which my mother had graduated. After discharge from the Air Force, I moved to Towson, Maryland and began attending Johns Hopkins University Summer School. There was a slight 9 month interruption along the way. His link can be found below. Eventually, I graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College , Lynchburg, Virginia in 1979.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TMJ SYMPTOMS
If you've come to this page first, you might also want to review a fuller description of the "Symptoms" page.
What are the most important symptoms I should be concerned about?
Pain, and or Jaw "locking" episodes.
What is a "locking" episode?
A "locking" episode can occur during opening or closing movement. What happens is that the patient experiences an interruption of jaw movement - a "catch" or a "stop", and in order to complete the movement must jiggle, or somehow, self manipulate the jaw.
Why does it happen?
Referring back to my anatomy lesson, and in the simplest of terms, what is happening within the Joint is that the Articular Disk which rides on top of the Condyle Head is getting stuck in the wrong place and is preventing the Condyle Head from moving.
If I can jiggle my jaw and reduce the dislocation, why should I be concerned?
Because each time it happens more damage is occuring to the tissues in the Joint, and the tissues controlling the Articular Disk. As a consequence there is the risk that if the problem is not addressed by appropriate treatment, one day you will be unable to reduce the dislocation yourself, and you will require an emergency visit to a TMJ practitioner, if one is available in your community, or an oral surgeon. In severe cases, reduction can only be accomplished under general anesthesia.

(Dentists - for more information on TMJ therapy/occlusion knowledge - click here A partial list of those within dentistry and medicine that attempt treatment of this problem includes;
  • Dentists Oral surgeons General practice physicians Neurologists Chiropractors Physical therapists Biofeedback therapists and others
W ithin each of these specialties there are very different approaches depending on the particular practitioner seen and his or her specific training and experience. This leads a great deal of the time to differing diagnosis and very different opinions about therapy from each professional seen. Patients can become very confused about which opinion or therapy recommendation is best for them. Some of the greatest confusion comes from within dentistry, there are a number of approaches to treatment and each one is currently fighting for their own to be recognized as correct therapy. Therefore, at this time there is no "ONE" standard of care - and there most likely won't be for a very long time.

There are two matching joints one on each side of your head, located just in front of your ears. The abbreviation "TMJ" literally refers to the joint but is often used to refer to any disorders or symptoms of this region. Such problems include popping sounds in the jaw, inability to fully open the mouth, jaw pain, headaches, earaches, toothaches, and various other types of facial pain Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Many TMJ-related symptoms are caused by the effects of physical and emotional stress on the structures around the joint. These structures include the muscles of the jaw, face, and neck; the teeth; the cartilage disc at the joint; and nearby ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. For example, daily stress can lead you to clench and grind your teeth, both during the day and at night while you sleep. Clenching means you tightly clamp your top and bottom teeth together, especially the back teeth. The stressful force of clenching causes pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around your jaw.
