The Grave of the Titanic
The story of the Titanic and the iceberg has grown into a legend of the sea. It took her discovery in 1985 to begin to find the truth behind the myth. One of the things that makes the Titanic so fascinating is that she represented the best of technology when she set sail on her ill-fated voyage in 1912, and it took the best of technology in the form of sonar, satellite tracking, and deep-dive technology to locate her grave 73 years later. In the early 1900's, waterborne transportation was the norm; today, satellites are taken for granted by our society. But we tend to forget the immense effort that these two technologies require to operate to their maximum potential. Until recently, the technology did not exist to locate, photograph, and explore this ship that rested two and a half miles down on the ocean floor. On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York. At that time, she was the largest and most luxurious ship ever built. At 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, she struck an iceberg about 400 miles off Newfoundland, Canada. Although her crew had been warned about icebergs several times that evening by other ships navigating through that region, she was traveling at near top speed of about 20.5 knots when one grazed her side. Less than three hours later, the

The Perfect Storm

Called the 'perfect storm', the Hallowe'en storm and the 'unnamed storm' because of the speed at which two storm fronts converged, it became another killer storm that took lives. Putting "Professional" into Shipwreck Exploration
by Greg Stemm

Editors Note: The world of shipwreck exploration has grown from romantic fantasy to a serious underwater contracting industry. IN this issue's column, ProSEA's Greg Stemm advocates the need for professionalism and credibility among contractors already engaged in the industry, and advises those not involved to pay attention to a rapidly growing and profitable venture. To most serious offshore technology companies, shipwrecks are like auto accidents. You know you shouldn't let them distract you, but they are so fascinating, it's hard to ignore them. Most of my friends in the deep ocean business have their favorite story about the crazy guy that called up and offered them the opportunity to get involved with a shipwreck project that sounds something like this:
  • "Nazi Gold" (We really had a witness that saw the gold being loaded! He died last month, but…);
  • "Lost Spanish Treasure" (We found documents in the archives that prove everyone else has looked in the wrong place);
  • "The Secret Cargo" (These priceless jewels were so secret that no one else ever even knew they existed!)

    Shipwreck survivor
    by Jamie Thompson Thursday 25 March 2004 TALE OF SURVIVAL: Second Officer Charles Lightoller was the highest ranking officer to live through the sinking of the Titanic. A CHILLING account of the sinking of the Titanic written by the highest ranking crewmember to survive the disaster has been revealed. Second Officer Charles Lightoller tells of how he brandished a revolver at male passengers and threatened to shoot them unless they gave up their places for women and children after crowding on to the last lifeboat. And he reveals how he refused to escape on the boat, preferring instead to take his chance with the hundreds of passengers still trapped on board.

    Titanic News: Keepsakes of Titanic officer up for auction
    Date: 22nd November 2003 LETTERS, photographs and mementoes which belonged to the most senior officer to survive the Titanic auctioned at Sotheby's in London next month The items were owned by second officer Charles Lightoller , who was portrayed by the late Kenneth More in the 1958 film, A Night to Remember. The Titanic was, amazingly, the second shipwreck Lightoller experienced - and survived. The most valuable item in the Lightoller collection is a "very rare" lunch menu served on the ill-fated, Belfast-built liner on April 2, 1912, just 13 days before she sank with the loss of 1,500 lives. Sotheby's say in their sale catalogue: "According to family tradition, it is believed that Charles H Lightoller probably gave the menu to his wife as a souvenir as he departed from Southampton "A very proud Mrs Lightoller, with her two young sons in their best sailor suits, had gathered with the rest of the crowds at Southampton dock to bid her husband farewell."

    Robert Ballard, Discoverer of the Wreck of the Titanic
    By Sharon Fabian Ever since the day when the Titanic sank in the icy water of the North Atlantic, people have been interested in finding the wreck of that famous ship. There were lots of stories about the Titanic, and people wanted to know what was really true. Did the Titanic really split in half, as one survivor claimed? What caused the ship, that was built to be unsinkable, to sink?
    Many adventurers have tried to be the one to discover the wreck, but for a long time no one was successful. The Titanic was not easy to find for several reasons. First of all, no one could pinpoint exactly where it had sunk. Second, the North Atlantic Ocean is especially deep, over 12,000 feet, and at those depths there is no light. It is also extremely cold in the deep ocean. So, for a long time, the exact location of the wreck of the Titanic remained a mystery.
    That all changed once Robert Ballard took on the challenge of finding the Titanic. Mr. Ballard had done his homework. He had learned about all of the problems that explorers before him had encountered. Then he found out about all of the latest technology that could help him get the job done right.

    Bow of RMS Titanic This was to be a summer of big profits for the new management team at RMS Titanic, Inc., which took control of the company in November, 1999 after a shareholder coup removed George Tulloch, the salvage firm's president, and Allan Carlin, its general counsel, in an effort to accelerate the salvaging of artifacts from the site of the oceanliner, which was sunk by an iceberg on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912. Led by new president Arnie Geller and chief operating officer G. Michael Harris, a former entertainment agent who once promoted dwarf-tossing acts in bars, this summer's expedition to the Titanic site aggressively planned to target high-profile and valuable artifacts in what would be "the most ambitious deep-sea exploration and recovery venture ever mounted." Among the stated targets for the summer of 2000 was a diamond shipment worth $300 million todaya shipment that some historians insist was never on board when the Titanic sank.

To prove my point how many times have you been in a traffic jam because everyone in front of you has to slow down to take a good look at an auto wreck? Shipwrecks are no different. The only thing different is once a shipwreck happens (one way or another), you can never see the results. Well now you can. With deep-sea exploration technology and with computer technology, you can now see shipwrecks for yourself. In the October's 31, 1999 issue of The Arizona Republic's Access Internet Magazine edition, there are five short articles (and Internet Web sites) on famous shipwrecks in history.
