REPORT BY MICHAEL J. MANYAK, M.D., FN'92
EXPEDITION ACTIVITIES
The flag expedition was divided into two distinctly different components. The first two weeks of the month-long expedition were primarily concerned with orientation of the medical team, determination of the correctness of the medical supplies for the problems encountered, testing of the communication network, and general oversight of the mechanisms required in case of an adverse medical event. The second two week period allowed more concentration on the scientific objectives of our team. Submersible dives began on July 29th with the first several dives dedicated to reconnaissance of the wreck site to determine the most suitable sites for artifact recovery. These dives also confirmed that no human remains were still present. This is hardly surprising since the environment is significantly more acidic and is under nearly 6000 lbs/in2 of pressure.
On August 11, the weather significantly worsened as Hurricane Alberto made its way toward the Great Banks. As the weather worsened, it became apparent that the Intervention with its rather flat hull was ill-equipped for the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic. The Magellan 750s were plagued by troubles from the start. One of the units could not be deployed and the second one was washed into the engine props causing extensive damage and precluding its use. With the ROVs useless and the seas becoming very turbulent to where the medical officer had serious concerns about safety, the decision was made to evacuate the artifacts and expedition personnel from the Intervention. That this was accomplished without injury is rather amazing and a tribute to the professionalism of the salvage crew and medical officer, Dr. Lanneau. Several people reported that the evacuation would not have been as successful without the participation of Dr. Lanneau.

The RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time of her launching, and was marketed as being "unsinkable". Her builders hoped that she would dominate the transatlantic ocean liner business. She struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912 during her maiden voyage. The sinking resulted in great loss of life and ranks as one of the worst maritime disasters in peacetime.
Construction
She was built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She was the second ship of the Olympic-class liners of the White Star Line Company built in that shipyard, but was the largest and most prestigious passenger liner of the day. The Titanic was 269 meters (882 1/2 ft) long, 28 meters (92 1/2 ft) wide, and 56 meters (185 ft) tall. Although she enclosed more space and therefore had a larger displacement rating, her hull was exactly the same size as her elder sister Olympic. The ship had 899 crewmen and was built for up to 3,300 passengers. Because she carried mail, she was also called RMS Titanic (RMS standing for Royal Mail Steamship). She was considered a pinnacle of technological achievement, and with her 16 watertight compartments she was thought to be unsinkable. At the ship's launch, one employee was quoted as saying, "Not even God himself could sink this ship".

Gigantic was later re-named Britannic . The ships were to be virtually identical in size and structure, but Titanic was to be the true shining star. On May 31, 1911, her superstructure completed, Titanic slipped gracefully into the River Lagan launched on twenty-two tons of tallow, train oil, and soap, and was towed to the fitting out basin. It was now time for the three thousand carpenters, engineers, electricians, plumbers, painters, master mechanics, and interior designers to fit the Titanic Titanic departed for her place in history.

GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS TO HAUNT SCIENCE NORTH'S
IMAX FESTIVAL
With a team of marine experts and historians, Cameron and his friend Bill Paxton embark on an unscripted journey to the final grave where nearly 1,500 souls lost their lives almost a century ago. Using state-of-the-art technology developed expressly for this expedition, Cameron and his crew explore virtually the entire ship, inside and out, as never before. The five-storey IMAX screen with 6,400 watts of surround sound will allow audiences to experience the journey as if they are part of the dive team, travelling deep below the surface of the ocean and far inside the ghostly shipwreck. Cameron and his team discover amazing images and artifacts that have remained hidden from explorers for over 90 years and then use those images as a doorway into history. More than any other shipwreck, Titanic continues to intrigue and fascinate the public. And the more Cameron discovers, the more intriguing this legendary wreck becomes.
Ghosts of the Abyss is one of two IMAX Festival films created by James Cameron. Volcanoes of the Deep Sea will thrill audiences as they take a plunge 3658 metres (12,000 feet) deep into this vast and little-explored dimension of our planet. This deep-sea journey follows a team of scientists as they dive to research mysterious hydrothermal vents on the mid-ocean ridge. As the dive unfolds, the scientists reveal the fantastic diversity of the deep: its strange communities of organisms, its shipwreck gardens, bioluminescent creatures and awesome giant predators.

Scientists Return to the Titanic
A Press Release from the National Geographic Society A new mission to the legendary shipwreck will assess the deterioration of the hulk with a view toward preservation. A consortium backed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Geographic Society, the University of Rhode Island, and private foundations has announced a June 2004 mission to the Titanic shipwreck in the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean. This press release issued by the consortium describes the expedition. Explorer Dr. Robert Ballard Returns to Titanic in June to Assess State of the Wreck National Geographic Channel to Originate Television Event from Expedition (Narragansett, R.I. April 15, 2004) - Nearly 20 years after first finding the sunken remains of the R.M.S. Titanic , marine explorer Dr. Robert Ballard will return in June to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) study the ship's rapid deterioration. Dr. Ballard and his partners announced the expedition today, the 92nd anniversary of the ship's sinking. "We know Titanic has been naturally deteriorating over time, but I'm convinced that the deterioration is being accelerated by manmade impacts as well," said Dr. Ballard, president of the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium and Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society. "The 1986 photo mosaic of the ship that we published in National Geographic magazine will serve as a baseline for comparative studies to determine the level of degradation that has occurred since then."

In this program Dr. Ozdas will carry the audience through the mesmerizingly deep blue waters of Mediterranean to the most secluded chapters of the ancient history. You may already know that Turkey is one of the richest countries in the world as far as historical and archaeological treasures are concerned. What you may not already know is that more than 50% of all the archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region lies in Turkish soil, and that 35% of naval battles which took place in Mediterranean history were around Turkish coast lines. Just as the earliest settlement in the world is in Turkey, the earliest known shipwreck also lies in Turkish waters. Kas Uluburun Bronze-age shipwreck is known to be the oldest shipwreck and its discovery is accepted as one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the last millennium. Turkey has extraordinarily rich underwater cultural heritage. Scientists and experts expecting to investigate the past civilizations and the mysteries of these shipwrecks dived into the blue waters of Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Each of the shipwrecks is a time capsule, hiding the mysteries of past cultures and lifestyles of the present. The shipwrecks found on Turkey's coastline do not only belong to Turks, but are a significant part of the cultural heritage for all mankind.

Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Titanic has been the subject of countless books, songs, Web sites and movies, so you are probably already familiar with the story. The huge ship, promoted as "unsinkable," scraped against an iceberg late on the night of April 14, 1912. As the ship began to sink, passengers rushed to the upper decks. Unfortunately, while there were enough flotation belts for everyone on board, Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats for all the passengers and many of the ship's lifeboats were deployed with room to spare. Early on the morning of April 15, 1912 about three hours after hitting the iceberg Titanic went under. Of the roughly 2,200 people aboard, about 1,500 were killed that night mostly from hypothermia or drowning in the icy water. The sinking of Titanic continues to grip the public imagination more than any other shipwreck, even though there have been several deadlier maritime disasters. Part of the lasting allure of the Titanic tragedy is its symbolism: a proud achievement, representative of man's ingenuity and believed to be infallible, is destroyed in a moment. (The tragedy found its way thus into a

Web posted at: 12:37 p.m. EDT (1237 GMT) DENVER (CNN) It's one of those tourist attractions that seems out of place. In the Rocky Mountain West 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean stands a monument to one of the greatest disasters at sea: the sinking of the Titanic. But the historic mansion and museum in downtown Denver have some strong ties to the White Star Line's "unsinkable" luxury ship. At one time, the Molly Brown House Museum was the fashionable home of one of the sunken ship's most famous survivors. Molly Brown represents sort of the American dream," said Leigh Grinstead, the museum's director. "She was a fairly poor working class girl who came and married well. He struck it rich." In the late 1800s, the Browns made their fortune from gold discovered high in the Colorado mountains. In 1894, the family settled in Denver. Molly Brown lived on and off in the Victorian mansion until her death in 1932. The house was restored in the 1970s to look as it did when the Browns lived in it, and today, it is one of Denver's top tourist attractions.

Bass said Thursday that the institute's Biblical archaeologist, Shelley Wachsmann, will join the expedition. He added that the shipwreck was located by the U.S. Navy while searching for a lost Israeli submarine and this June's visit will involve inspecting the sea floor with robots and mapping the shipwreck.
"Then, in July, we're going to go to Sinop, in Turkey, to survey the Black Sea," Bass said. "Dr. Ballard's going to be moving into deeper waters of the Black Sea in 2000. That's when I'll be going up to join him."
Ballard's hour-long presentation to almost 1,000 people in Rudder Auditorium Wednesday evening covered his 30-plus-year career in deep-sea exploration, including the discovery in the 1970s of previously unknown life forms living near hydrothermal vents off the Galapagos Islands.
He said the giant clams and tube worms had adapted to life in the extremely hostile environment and may provide clues to the origin of life on earth and could support the theory of life on other planets.
But the public reaction to all of those discoveries, Ballard added, paled in comparison to his locating the sunken Titanic in 1985.

The shipwreck pictures show that the impact of the titanic iceberg did not cause indentations in the starboard side of the old ship as it was long thought, but probably caused the breakage of structurally weak rivets. This allowed the disassembly of the hull plates, and, consequently, the entry of water as shown by the shipwreck pictures
