Titanic: "Ship of Dreams", "The Unsinkable Ship", and now the "Most Famous Shipwreck of All". Known by many different names, the Titanic will never be forgotten.
Titanic set off from the docks of Southampton in early April 1912, on it's maiden voyage, carrying 2,220 passengers. While speeding toward New York City, the Titanic struck an iceberg only minutes before midnight on April 14. Titanic was swallowed by the sea in less than three hours. 1,513 passengers died with her that night. Titanic is now at the bottom of the sea, but the dreadful occurrences of April 14, 1912 live on in the minds and hearts of us all. Young and old find Titanic exhibit
larger than life By Julie DeHerrera
The Salt Lake Tribune Amanda and Max Boyden had always heard that a great-uncle was supposed to have had a ticket for the Titanic. But in this family legend, "he had a weird feeling and did not board," said Amanda, 11, as she stood just inside "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition," at the ZCMI Mall in Salt Lake City on Saturday. "I'm happy he didn't." Nine-year-old Max was not a bit happy with the bottom-of-the-sea soundtrack. "The music creeps me out," he said. Even so, he said, "I saw the movie and wanted to see the objects from the ship." Amanda, Max and their mother, Cathy Boyden, were among hundreds who came to opening day of the exhibit, which features 292 artifacts from the passenger ship that sank on April 14, 1912, after striking a iceberg in the North Atlantic. On display are floor tiles, lamps, jewelry, money and dishware, even a toilet that would have been reserved for third-class passengers, typically emigrants who would have never seen such plumbing. Rivets, spikes, bolts and screws some as tall as a two-story building fascinated Ken Hocker Smith, 71, of Salt Lake City, who has read several books about the ship. "It's amazing that they could salvage this much from so many years underwater," he said. He paused in the boiler room and commented on the "Black Gang," men who worked in the boiler room in temperatures exceeding 130 degrees, shoveling 620 tons of coal every day. Only a quarter of the gang survived the disaster.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Retired U.S. District Judge J. Calvitt Clarke Jr., who oversaw the salvage rights of the Titanic shipwreck, died Thursday after a long illness, a funeral home said. He was 83.
Clarke was nominated to the bench by President Gerald R. Ford in 1974. His notable cases in 24 years on the court included the 1985 espionage trial of Arthur James Walker and James River pesticide Kepone pollution litigation of the late 1970s.
He had supervised the salvage of the historic shipwreck since 1992. In 1994, Clarke granted Atlanta-Based R.M.S. Titanic Inc. sole salvage rights. He continued to oversee dives, salvage reports and preservation of artifacts after his 1999 retirement.
He also presided over the ownership and salvage rights of the Lusitania wreckage, early asbestos damage lawsuits and highway construction bid-rigging cases.

The Titanic has sunk (relatively) near Nova Scotia two years before the beginning of the World War I. There are two dates implied by the quatrain identification: The first verse says that near and before (aupres) the conflict the great wall will fall. The Great Wall from mythology is the Wall of Titans, or the Titanic. The second verse says that the shipwreck would happen suddenly and would be a lamented tragedy.

DNA Identifies Child Victim of Titanic Shipwreck By Mary Wilcox HALIFAX (Reuters) - It has taken 90 years, the latest in DNA technology and a television documentary to do it, but the "Unknown Child" from the doomed Titanic has finally been identified. The crew of the Canadian recovery ship Mackay-Bennett found the body of the young, fair-haired boy a few days after the steamer sank, with the loss of 1,517 lives. But there was no identification and the crewmen decided to take the body to Halifax and pay for a proper funeral, burying the little coffin at the top of a hill in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, along with 120 other Titanic victims. The headstone reads "Unknown Child" and over the years it has attracted the attention of cemetery visitors. Now the experts have determined it was the body of Eino Viljami Panula, who was 13 months old when the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912. He was one of five brothers from Finland who died in the disaster, along with their mother. "The unknown child is now a known child, identified and returned to his family," said Ryan Parr of Canada's Lakehead University, who coordinated the work of over 50 scientists, genealogists and Titanic researchers.

Tiny microbes are at work 3,800 m under the sea at the site of the Titanic Titanic have been observed for many years, not much effort has gone into studying them. This expedition sent two Mir submersibles to survey the microbes that are infesting the ship and to determine their rate of growth. In 1998, four steel test platforms were placed in various locations near and on the wreck to assess the growth of rusticles on steel in different stages of fatigue. This expedition visited these platforms, and the video imagery revealed that all four showed strong evidence of rusticle growth. The longest rusticle extended 2.5 inches from the steel coupon.
One of the experiments conducted on this expedition was to see if a common species of surface-dwelling bacteria could survive exposure to the conditions at the Titanic site. In 1998, five species were sent to the site and survived for 18 hrs with losses of no more than one order of magnitude of cells. This year, the experiment was limited to one species of bacteria

05/29/2002 - Updated 09:28 AM ET Shipwreck hunter Ballard finds Kennedy's PT 109 AP file John F. Kennedy aboard PT 109 in 1943. The remains of the wooden boat, PT 109, were lying on the seabed in the Blanket Strait near Gizo in the New Georgia group of islands, Ballard told Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. radio. Gizo is 235 miles northwest of the capital of the Solomons, Honiara. Ballard, who led a team that found the Titanic shipwreck in 1985, said he located the wreckage of Kennedy's boat last week after searching for about a week. He did not provide further details of the discovery, citing contractual obligations over film and magazine rights to the search. The radio report said a National Geographic documentary will be released in November. Members of the National Geographic team in the Solomon Islands did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The PT 109 sank in August 1943 after it was hit by a Japanese warship.
