Mars Sundial to Help Teach Kids About Time, Sun John Roach
for National Geographic News
December 9, 2003 If all goes according to plan this coming January, the twin Spirit and Opportunity rovers will land on Mars. At that same time continuously updated images of sundials built by school children and individuals around the world will launch on the Internet. The link between the two lies in science and the sun. Read the full Organizers of the EarthDial Project are encouraging children and other curious minds to think about the concepts of time and planetary motion. They hope to have people from all corners of the globe build sundials (above) similar to the one that will ride on the solar panel of the Mars rovers scheduled to land in January. Time Measurement, Time Zones, and the International Date Line
The two natural cycles on which time measurements are based are the year and the day. The year is defined as the time required for Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun, while the day is the time required for Earth to complete one turn upon its axis. Earth needs 365 days plus about six hours to go around the Sun once, so a year does not consist of a round number of days; the fractional day has to be taken care of by an extra day every fourth year. But because Earth, while turning upon its axis, also moves around the Sun, there are two kinds of days. A day may be defined as the interval between the highest point of the Sun in the sky on two successive days. This, averaged out over the year, produces the customary 24-hour day. But one might also define a day as the time interval between the moments when a certain point in the sky, say a conveniently located star, is directly overhead. This is called: Sidereal time.

Students will understand the following: A sundial is a tool for estimating time of day during sunlit hours. For this lesson, you will need: Two-to-three-foot stick Ten flat rocks approximately 3 to 5 inches in diameter During the period of the day when the sun is above the horizon, we can use the constant and steady motion of the sun, and the shadows it casts, to measure the hours of the day by constructing a sundial. Have your students locate 10 flat rocks, all approximately 3 to 5 inches in diameter. They should paint one of the following times on each rock: 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., and 5 p.m.

Below is a list of time related and based calculators , conversion charts, tables and converter programs available for online use. Some of these are directly related to interest in various measurements of time and some are of indirect interest. Some are designed for business use. You won't find the New York Times here, a time capsule , see Time Magazine , some fun time , take a Walk Through Time , a time machine , get a time out or even learn times tables (OK, so maybe you will...); we do, however, provide much about time ( page loaded) and a good time. Time ( does anybody really know what time it is... ) is such an interesting topic for society in general; there is never enough of it, or there is too much of it, depending on your point of view. Most of these programs and applets have been written for our specific needs or those of our customers. Time was, the definition of time was your father's (or grandfather's) pocket watch , or the grandfather clock in the den. No so anymore... Some of these time related gems are interfaced to the atomic clock for the utmost in accuracy in keeping the NIST Official US Time , some use your local computer clock system for a pulse, several use our Internet server's clock for the time base, a few use other available Internet server time functions, while some just accumulate, display, convert and report time, in a timely fashion. We urge you to take the time to look them over; several do similar things with differences in entry or accumulation properties. Apparent solar time is based on the apparent solar day , which is the interval between two successive returns of the sun to the local meridian. Solar time can be measured by a sundial. The length of a solar day varies throughout the year. This is because the Earth's orbit is an ellipse, and not a circle, and the Earth moves faster when it is nearest the Sun and slower when it is farthest from the sun. (

Standard Time As we know, the earth rotates in an eastward direction, causing the sun, moon, and stars to appear to be moving westward through the sky. Solar noon is defined as that point in time when the sun's rays strike a point on the earth's surface most directly. The noon meridian is that meridian at which solar noon occurs at any given time. Solar time at any location is determined by the noon meridian. Until the nineteenth century, individual localities kept their own solar time. Such a system worked well in pre-industrial societies, but the development of modern industrial society forced people to confront the problems associated with variation in local solar time with even small distances eastward and westward. The noon meridian moves westward at about fifteen degrees of longitude per hour, or one degree every four minutes. Nineteenth-century railroads providing east-west service had difficulty adjusting their schedules to local differences in standard time. For example, travelers on trains from Philadelphia to Washington were obliged to set their watches back about eight minutes because Washington is two degrees of longitude west of Philadelphia. When it was noon in Washington, for example, it was already 12:24 p.m. in Boston but only 11:43 a.m. in Savannah, Georgia.

Time zones are areas of the Earth that have adopted the same standard time. Formerly, people used local solar time (originally apparent and then mean), resulting in time differing slightly from town to town. As telecommunications improved and with the expansion of the railways this became increasingly awkward. Time zones partially rectified the problem by setting the clocks of a region to the same mean solar time. Time zones are generally centered on
