Working in Virtual Teams
Overcoming Time and Geography?
Following from the section on Virtual Organisations , this section will look at a different form of vitual group: The Virtual Team. The Encyclopedia from CALT at Insead offers a large selection of material that may be of general interest for this and other sections concerned with different types of virtual group. The concept of the virtual team is not clearly defined, and it often overlaps with notions such as the virtual or networked organization, the virtual workplace, virtual communities, electronic commerce and certain forms of teleworking. Virtual Teams are seen as essentially project or task focused groups. The team membership may be relatively stable (e.g. in an established sales team) or change on a regular basis (e.g. in project teams). Their members may be drawn from the same organization, (e.g. production planners and production operatives) or from several different organizations, (e.g. when projects involve consultants or external assessors). Further distinctions can be made on physical proximity, (i.e. whether or not team members are co-located and can interact face-to-face or are geographically separated) and by work-cycle synchronicity, (i.e. whether or not members interact in the same or different time periods). In contrast to home based work and telework For a further discussion of this topic, see

The Linux System Administrator's Guide: Version 0.7 Prev Chapter 13. Keeping Time Next
13.1. Time zones
Time measurement is based on mostly regular natural phenomena, such as alternating light and dark periods caused by the rotation of the planet. The total time taken by two successive periods is constant, but the lengths of the light and dark period vary. One simple constant is noon. Noon is the time of the day when the Sun is at its highest position. Since the Earth is round, noon happens at different times in different places. This leads to the concept of local time . Humans measure time in many units, most of which are tied to natural phenomena like noon. As long as you stay in the same place, it doesn't matter that local times differ. As soon as you need to communicate with distant places, you'll notice the need for a common time. In modern times, most of the places in the world communicate with most other places in the world, so a global standard for measuring time has been defined. This time is called universal time (UT or UTC, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time or GMT, since it used to be local time in Greenwich, England). When people with different local times need to communicate, they can express times in universal time, so that there is no confusion about when things should happen.

1. Describe each of the spheres - lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere. How do you distinguish each sphere from the others? Where is it? Does it intergrade with the other spheres?
... Figure 5.6 -Time zones of the earth 1. Time zones divide the earth into 24 segments or zones that run generally north-south. That is, they generally follow meridians (lines of longitude). However, the boundaries of time zones have been adjusted for political purposes, e.g., the Central Time Zone follows the Indiana-Illinois boundary. Look at the time zone for the Peoples Republic of China; the continent of Africa. What rule applies to establishing the time zones of these places? 2. If the distance around the globe in terms of degrees is 360 degrees, and there are 24 hours in a day, each time zone is nominally 15 degrees wide (360/24 = 15). Look at the numbers at the bottom of Figure 5.6. They show that time zones are centered on meridians at 15 degree intervals. What meridian runs through the Central Time Zone? If it is 15 degrees wide, what meridian is the eastern side of the Central Time Zone; what is the western side? 3. Time for the earth is specified two ways. We are accustomed to thinking of the time in a particular time zone, e.g., it's 9:30 a.m. in Carbondale, in the Central Time Zone. But that means that people in different time zones think it's a different time. The other way to account time is to establish a place whose time will be considered the time around the world, a universal time. Time in Greenwich, England, where the prime meridian is located is used as the universal time.

Eastern Standard Time Queensland lies in the Eastern Standard Time zone for Australia (which has three zones including central and western.)
The standard time for the eastern zone is based on the mean solar times of the 150 degree east meridian giving Queensland time 10 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. The came into effect through the Standard Time Act 1894.
Daylight Saving Queensland does not have daylight saving but the southern states do. This is a controversial matter and in 2004 continues to be debated politically and in the community.

The province of North Sulawesi with an area of 1,533,698 ha is located at 0º30"- 4º 3" North Latitude and 121º127" East Longitude. To the north the region borders on the Republic of the Philippines, Sulawesi Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern part is on the Maluku Sea and the Southern side is the Tomini Gulf. The western part borders Gorontalo Province, which until the end of 2000 was a part of North Sulawesi and then became an own province.
The terrain is extremely mountainous and hilly, stretching from the Lembean - Wulur Mahatus mountain chain in Minahasa to Mount Ambang - Mount Gambuta in Bolaang Mongondow. There are some active active and many extinct volcanoes, some towering 1,800 - 2,000 meters. Rich volcanic ash has blessed North Sulawesi with fertile lands; the highlands and lowlands producing rice, coconut, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and vegetables. The plains produce rice and corn in Dumoga, Ayong and Sangkub (Bolaang Mongondow). Plateaus in Tondano (Minahasa) also produce rice and corn, while Modoinding is known for its vegetables. Sangihe Talaud is recognized for its high quality nutmeg and Rumbia Trees (The Sago Palm is the source of a special flour for traditional cookies/snacks).
Sulawesi is surrounded by deep waters, the Sulawesi Sea in North Sulawesi is approx. 6,200 m deep.

What is Physical Geography? 1. Fundamental questions of physical geography So, what is Physical/Environmental Geography about? If you think about the world we live in (the material aspect of the world, to be specific), you'll probably agree that it may be roughly divided into (1) things of natural origin, and (2) things of cultural origin, i.e. created by people. Natural things are also called physical (in the broad sense, meaning non-human) or environmental. One way to answer the question above physical geography is about the physical elements of our world: landforms, soils, rivers, air masses, ecosystems, and so on. The problem with this definition is that every major environmental phenomenon is also studied by its own respective branch of science. Indeed, as the table below shows, landforms are the subject of geomorphology, weather is studied by meteorology, oceans and rivers - by hydrology, etc. Physical Elements of the Environment Science Rocks Geology Landforms Geomorphology Soils Pedology Flora, Fauna
