Lesson Plans Science Earth Understanding Time Zones Understanding Time Zones:
Overview:
It used to be that knowing the time zones for your country was enough. With the Internet and e-mail we find ourselves wondering what time it is in Austrailia and other parts of the world.
Teacher Preparation: Look up links to other websites. Cut a large sun out of yellow paper.
Procedure Ideas:
  • For younger students: create a room sized map by assigning each student a state name to write on a sheet of paper then have them go stand in the proper location for that state. They may need to consult a map or globe first. Divide them by timezones with strips of crepe paper or yarn. Then move the paper sun from one end of the room to the other to simulate the movement of the sun across the country. As you move, have them figure out the time for where they are standing.
  • Draw a 1 foot circle divided into 24 sections to make a graphic to place under a globe. Each section represents an hour of the day and rotating the globe shows the time for any given part of the world.

Time Measurement, Time Zones, and the International Date Line
The two natural cycles on which time measurements are based are the year and the day. The year is defined as the time required for Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun, while the day is the time required for Earth to complete one turn upon its axis. Earth needs 365 days plus about six hours to go around the Sun once, so a year does not consist of a round number of days; the fractional day has to be taken care of by an extra day every fourth year. But because Earth, while turning upon its axis, also moves around the Sun, there are two kinds of days. A day may be defined as the interval between the highest point of the Sun in the sky on two successive days. This, averaged out over the year, produces the customary 24-hour day. But one might also define a day as the time interval between the moments when a certain point in the sky, say a conveniently located star, is directly overhead. This is called: Sidereal time.

Spring forward...Fall back.... It's ingrained in our consciousness almost as much as the A-B-Cs or our spelling reminder of "i before e...." And it's a regular event, though perhaps a bit less regular than the swallows coming back to Capistrano. Yet in those four words is a whole collection of trivia, facts and common sense about Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April ( see chart below ). Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. Daylight Saving Time for the U.S. and its territories is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and by most of Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona). California has not yet received federal "approval" to move to a "year-round" Daylight Saving Time in 2001-2002. (

GLOSSARY ... ABOUT CHAPTER 2: Introduction to Physical Geography (c). Map Location and Time Zones Before the late nineteenth century, time keeping was essentially a local phenomenon. Each town would set their clocks according to the motions of the sun. Noon was defined as the time when the sun would reached its maximum altitude above the horizon. Cities and towns would assign a clockmaker to calibrate a town clock to these solar motions. This town clock would then represent "official" time and the citizens would set their watches and clocks accordingly. The later half of the nineteenth century was time of increased movement of humans. In the United States and Canada, large numbers of people were moving west and settlements in these areas began expanding rapidly. To support these new settlements, railroads moved people and resources between the various cities and towns. However, because of the nature of how local time was kept, the railroads experience major problems in constructing timetables for the various stops. Timetables could only become more efficient if the towns and cities adopted some type of standard method of keeping time.

It's about TIME
By H. David Matthews and Mary Vincent W E ARE A COUNTRY of chronic lawbreakers. From east to west, Canada is neatly divided into six time zones. But many Canadians choose to make their own time and ignore the time zone boundaries. And the rule that clocks spring forward on the first Sunday in April and fall back on the last Sunday in October? In some parts of Canada, the times are never a-changin': we all know that Saskatchewan doesn't use daylight savings, but other pockets of the country don't bother with it either. And while Alberta's time-abiding citizens strictly follow Mountain Time - violators can be slapped with a $25 fine - these maps illustrate Canada's time zone anomalies.
The Northwest Territories has four time zones and no shortage of time zone quirks. The Canadian Forces station at Alert uses Eastern Time while the handful of residents at the Eureka weather station skip daylight savings. Baffin Island, which is crossed by the Central, Eastern and Atlantic Time zones only uses Eastern Time. Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak and Pelly Bay all use Mountain instead of Central Time and Southampton Island is not required to use daylight savings. Time stands still around the British Columbia communities of Fort St. John and Dawson Creek. Residents are on Mountain Standard Time year round, meaning Mountain Time in the winter and Pacific Time in the summer.

We measure the day by saying that the sun is at it's highest point at 12 o'clock, midday. Because the earth spins, as it travels around the sun, one half of the earth is in darkness and one half in light, all the time. This brings us to a problem. If it is midday where you are, on the opposite side of the earth, it is dark, so what time is it on the opposite side of the world?
Day and Night
Before time keeping and clocks were invented, people used to know approximately what time it was by watching the sun. If you look out of the window, at different times of the day, you will see that the sun is in a different place each time you look. This is the same everywhere in the world. Once clocks were invented, they simply had to look at a clock to know what time it was. The earth spins on an imaginary line known as its axis, this movement is known as
