Attenzione!

About 627 Songtsan Gampo succeeds his father and continues to consolidate Tibet under his rule. Songtsan Gampo introduces Buddhism to Tibet. Having already married three Tibetans princesses and a Nepalese princess, Brikuthi, he takes a Chinese princess, Wen-Ch'eng, as his bride, thus creating alliances with the countries to the west and east. Warfare breaks out between Tibet and the T'ang dynasty of China. Tibet gains influence along trade route through central Asia. Tritsong Detsan takes the throne. (from Oct. 2002 trip) Tibet: A Journey to Beyond Tomorrow
There are chances to find other worlds, other places, where people live other lives than us. Tibet is one of those places. Life is a great adventure and Tibet offers us the chance to live a life of great adventure. My first short journey into Tibet, was something I will never forget. In October 2000, I went to Tibet as part of a 4 person tour, lead by Tibetian guides. The first couple of days we went to the main temples in Lhasa. In the afternoons I went to see the monks chanting at the Jokhang Temple
We went in a Land Cruiser up into the mountains. Our camps were out on the barren mountains, beside sparkling rivers. Nomads that live in tents and tend herds of Yaks came to visit our camp. Sometimes there would be up to 30 children, nomads, or farmers hanging around our camp. I had my guitar and played music for them. They were all really nice people. We visited Temples, sacred caves, monasteries, and nunneries that were built up on the sides of mountains. Away from the tourists in Lhasa, the more remote places gave us quiet moments to hang out, meditate, and feel the culture.

SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (1997) At the end of the world his real journey began. October 8th, 1997 Jean-Jacques Annaud Heinrich Harrer, Becky Johnston Brad Pitt, David Thewlis, B.D. In the autumn of 1939, Heinrich Harrer, the famous Austrian mountaineer, and his countryman Peter Aufschnaiter, set out to climb Nanga Parbat, one of the highest peaks in the Himalayas. The self-centered Harrer, whose sole preoccupation was the achievement of fame and glory, would experience an emotional awakening on his fantastic journey that would take him form the heights of conquest to the depths of internment in a British prisoner-of-war camp, then from escape and a harrowing two-year trek through the Himalayas to the mysterious Tibetan city of Lhasa.
As a stranger in a strange land which few westerners have ever visited, Harrer was befriended by the young Dalai Lama, and was asked to tutor the religious leader in English, geography and the ways of the Western world. He would eventually spend seven years in Tibet, during a period of tremendous political upheaval in that country, graced with the friendship and the spiritual enlightenment of the young Dalai Lama. As the deep and abiding bond between these two isolated, lonely people evolved, the selfish and egotistical Harrer experienced selflessness for the first time, allowing him to complete the emotional transformation which began on his way to Lhasa.

Tibet by Tandem
In the summer of 1997, Martine Vos and Frans Cornelissen traveled by tandem bike from Kunming, Yunnan, China to Kathmandu, Nepal via Tibet. They were the first ever to travel the famous Lhasa-Katmandu highway through the Himalayas by tandem bike. On their way, they crossed several 5000 meter high mountain passes, navigated the worst roads imaginable, had long and fears arguments with the Chinese authorities, made an unplanned 1400 km and 6 day bus ride and rode on (or under?) "the roof of the world". This is our story in pictures . To continue reading the story, navigate with the small arrow butttons on the top and bottom of the page. The index pages provide small thumbnail images, and allow you to quickly navigate through the site. The "full size photo" link will give you an even further enlarged copy of the picture. The upward pointing arrow on the index pages will get you back to this page. Enjoy!
