China asserts that no country has ever recognized Tibet. China also contends that Britain masterminded the Simla Conference (1913-1914) in collusion with Tibetan pro-British individuals. Both wanted to separate Tibet from China. At the time of the Simla Conference, even though the "McMahon Line" was negotiated between Tibet and Britain, at the end of the tripartite conference on Tibet's status and boundaries, Chinese officials who were present refused to recognize the "Line" on the grounds that Tibet was subordinate to China and had no power to make any treaties. Museum Info
Mission Statement Staffs Photo Gallery ... Credits The Tibet museum was established with the aim of presenting Tibet’s history and visions for its future through texts, photographs, videos and installations. The museum features our main exhibition, "A long look homeward". It is divided into two sections: the first floor presents the Chinese occupation of Tibet and its results, and the second one displays Tibet’s past and hopes for its future. In addition, the museum hosts a memorial for the 1.2 million Tibetans who died as a result of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, a remembrance and hope butter-lamp display.
The small lecture hall is used for showing various historical films on Tibet, lectures and presentations relating to Tibetan history and culture. Catering to the diverse audience of visitors to Dharamsala, all the textual presentations in the museum are given in three languages: Tibetan, English and Hindi. The Tibet Museum is more than a space for exhibitions, installations and lectures. It also provides a platform for educational activities relating to Tibetan history - through in-house activities and special events, travelling museum kits, catalogues, and various other publications.

Where do SHERPAS ... Facts about Yaks Q: What does the term SHERPA mean A: Although westerners pronounce it "Sher-pa" the native Sherpa pronunciation is "Shar-wa." Shar means "east" wa means "person" - in Sherpa and Tibetan language. In Tibetan script, the word "Shar-wa" is spelled like this. The word "Sharwa" is also a relatively recent identifier. As the eminent Nepali anthropologist Dor Bahadur Bista remarks in his extensive descriptions of Nepal's many ethnic and tribal groups "Peoples of Nepal" (Ratna Pustak, Kathmandu, 1967): "Through the course of time the name Sherpa has gained so much currency that it almost acts as a tribal name, and it does in fact define a specific group of people. Before Sherpas were so highly publicized by mountaineering expeditions they introduced themselves to other societies as "Shar Khombo" - i.e., the inhabitants of Shar-Khumbu. The Center for Research on Tibet at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) was founded in 1987. Our goal is to conceptualize and conduct research on Tibetan history, society, language, ecology/physiology and culture so as to understand traditional Tibet and the manner in which it has changed. The Center is housed in Mather Memorial Building at Case Western Reserve University, and is administratively under the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Drs. Melvyn C. Goldstein (the John Reynolds Harkness Professor of Anthropology) and Cynthia M. Beall (the Sarah Idell Pyle Professor of Anthropology) are its co-Directors. From the beginning, the Center has maintained a collaborative relationship with the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences (TASS) in Lhasa, and has undertaken a wide range of research projects on different aspects of present and past Tibet with the cooperation of TASS. Since 1988, the Center has hosted eight scholars from TASS for periods ranging from 6 months to one year. Two young Tibetan researchers from TASS have received Masters of Arts degrees in Anthropology (1988 and 2003), while another Tibetan student earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2001.

89. Introduction To The Five Principal Spiritual Traditions Of Tibet
From the Government of tibet in Exile.
http://www.tibet.com/Buddhism/budintro.html
Introduction to the Five Principal Spiritual Traditions of Tibet
Tradition has it that Tibet is the land of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and the Tibetan people are his descendants. They trace their ancestry to the copulation of an ape, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and an ogress, an emanation of the goddess Tara, whose progeny gave birth to the Tibetan people in the Yarlung valley. Buddhism became Tibet's state religion only later. Introduced for the first time in 173 C.E., during the reign of King Lha Thothori Nyantsen, it was gradually assimilated, disseminated and finally integrated into the Tibetan way of life due initially to the efforts of the religious kings. King Song Tsen Gampo took control of the kingdom at the age of thirteen and built Rasa Trulnang Tsuglag Kbang and Ramoche Tsuglag Khang two temples in Lhasa. He sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to learn Sanskrit and writing, and as a result a Tibetan script was then modelled one of those current in India. He invited Acharya Kumara and Brahmin Shankara from India and the Nepalese Acharya Shilmanju, who began the propagation and translation of the Buddha's teachings. Although there was neither conspicuous nor extensive study of Buddhist doctrine, the king himself gave instructions to many fortunate people, mostly concerning the teachings of the Arya Avalokiteshvara. During the reign of King Trisong Deutsen, Buddhism was spread with great zeal after he had invited the Abbot Shantarakshita and Acharya Padmasambhava to Tibet. The task of translating Buddha's teachings was carried out with great vigour and enthusiasm. It is said that altogether one hundred and eight Indian scholars were engaged with Tibetan translators in the work of translating Buddhist literature into Tibetan. They also took part in establishing monasteries.

Here are three selections from John Powers' lucid and illuminating book, Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism
  • Introduction An overview of Tibetan Buddhism's doctrines, practices, history and the importance of personal transformation involving visualization, ritual and meditation.
  • Death and Dying in Tibetan Buddhism Dying An excerpt explaining Tibetan Buddhism's strong emphasis on instructions about death and dying
  • Bon: A Heterodox System Before Buddhism entered Tibet in the 7th century, the Bon faith was Tibet's native religious tradition. Bon, from which Tibetan Buddhism has borrowed freely, involved a primitive kind of animism. Its practices included animal and human sacrifice, and magical and occult rituals
Here is a good summary of the evolution of Buddhism in Tibet, the role of the Dalai Lama and everyday religious practices, beliefs and rituals. From Peter Hopkirk's Trespassers on the Roof of the World-The Race for Lhasa.
