Archaeology of the Tibetan Areas and Tibetan Culture and Art
Due to Chinese vast territories, multi-nationality, complicated natural environment and long history, the culture of different areas is with distinct traditional features and regional diversification. The study of this field is to make an all-round investigation of the traditional culture and art of the Tibetan areas, the reflected special humanistic phenomena, the interaction of varied culture, and the distributions, development, changes and formation of Tibetan culture. The study will help people to understand the scientific fact deeply and restore the history that Chinese multi-nationality has created Chinese civilization together. The research achievements will play a big part in developing the correlated subjects of nationality, history, religion and so on. Since China is in a new situation of responding to the Party¡¯s call for developing western areas at present, effective policies are necessarily to be made. For this reason, the first thing is to be familiar with western history, current situation and traditional culture, and the specially important thing is that the disequilibrium of cultural development and its historical source are to be judged scientifically. Because of the special position of Tibet in western areas, the outcomes of the research will be beneficial to the reality, and the study of this field is with remarkable practical significance.

Video: Discovering Tibet Beautiful sightseeing Tibetans Festivals Tibetan Calendar - In the 7 th century, Princess Wen Cheng brought Tang's calendar to Tibet. Around 9 th century, Indian Buddhists adopted aru-yoga of the Esoteric Buddhism and the Han calendars to form the present Tibetan calendars. The main purposes of the Tibetan calendars were providing a working seasonal schedule for farmers and shepherds, also, dating the enlightening date of Buddha. Tibetan Medicine - The Han medicine was transmitted to Tibet by the two Tang Princesses Wen Cheng and Jin Cheng. During the revival of the Buddhism in Tibet, many Indian monks were fond of medicine, and transmitted Indian medicine to Tibet. Thangkas - are painted or embroidered images rendered on cloth, silk or paper which is mounted on a cloth backing and may be rolled up like a scroll when not hung. The Eastern Tibetan was the oldest and heavily influenced by those of the Han nationality. This style is individualistic and probably too free for the taste of Buddhists. The Western school began after the Indian master - Atisa came to Tibet in 11 th century.

¡¡The Impact of Buddhism on Tibetan Culture Though imported from outside, Buddhism was effective in accelerating the development of Tibet's culture. Songtsan Gampo is credited with the invention of the Tibetan script with the aim of spreading Buddhism and translating Buddhist sutras, and in the course of this the Tibetan script itself was improved. Because there are many concepts not of the material world in the sutras, such as "the boundless universe," "the four great world," "the six cycles of beings" and "heaven and hell," new vocabulary had to be created in order to translate such terms and concepts, and so the Tibetan language became enriched in the gradual course of time. ¡¡With the development of a script, Tibet's national culture developed in leaps and bounds. Moving on from translation, the compiling and writing of books in Tibetan became the order of the day. The Kagyur (the translated scriptures) and Ten-gyur (the translated elucidating treatises) are of course well-known both in China and abroad, but other works such as biographies, dramas, poems, astrological, medical and technical treatises are all treasures of Tibetan culture which also appeared as required.

Home Tibet Tibetan Culture Tibetan culture, thoroughly permeated with religion, is the product of a particular historical epoch. This culture of the Tibetan people finds expression in traditional folk art forms. It can be traced back as far as the Tubo and Shang-shung period more than 1,000 years ago. The Central Government has always paid attention to the protection and development of Tibetan folk culture. Since the 1980s the regional government has emphasized the scientific transmission and development of ethnic Tibetan folk art traditions. In cultural work efforts are made to preserve the integrity of the culture. Large numbers of experts have been organized to salvage what remains of the cultural legacy. Tibetan culture has been developed by constantly absorbing and learning from the excellent cultures of other ethnic groups in China and elsewhere in the world. Today, influential novels, essays, plays, painting and sculpture, photographic works, movies, and TV films are coming out of Tibet. Tibetan song and dance, Tibetan opera, cultural relics, fine arts, and photographic works are frequently shown in China and elsewhere in the world. Many personages of the cultural circle both at home and abroad are becoming increasingly aware of the variety and flavor of modern Tibetan culture, and its blending of traditional qualities with a more contemporary spirit acquired through opening to the outside world. This new Tibetan culture is diversified.

Tibetan culture suffers under Chinese rule
Dusty Brannan

Contributing Writer While the United States bathes in the luxury of independence, others around the world struggle to keep their culture afloat. On Saturday, Oct. 14, The Students for a Free Tibet held a meeting to show the beauty of the Tibetan culture, as well as the hardship this culture faces under Chinese rule. Tibet was invaded by the People's Republic of China in 1949. Tashi Gyaltsong, a senior in pre-medicine, and Sarah Rogers, a junior in comparative religion, are leaders and campus representatives of The Students for a Free Tibet. Their mission is to educate the campus community about the human-rights atrocities they say Tibet faces. According to Kunzang Yuthok, the director of the Seattle-based Tibetan Rights Campaign, Tibet does not want military help from the rest of the world. Rather, it wants the United States to pressure China, through trade restriction, to open up discussion with Tibet about human-rights issues. Tibet wants to preserve its culture while providing opportunity for the next generations. The Tibetan Rights Campaign pamphlet states that more than 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a result of the Chinese occupation. That amounts to one out of every six Tibetans slain.

Women's Freedom and Spiritual Liberation:
2000 European Tour The Khachoe Ghakyil nuns: women and innovation in Tibetan culture
The North American tour of the nuns of Khachoe Ghakyil Nunnery (KGN) typifies the remarkable efforts made by the Tibetan people to preserve and reconstitute their rich culture following the takeover of Tibet by the Communist Chinese. From the beginning of their exile, the preservation of religion and culture was identified by the Dalai Lama as the foremost task confronting the exile community in India and Nepal. But the Tibetan people have chosen not merely to preserve the fixed forms of their ancient traditions, but to regenerate and adapt them to the new world in which they find themselves. It is this dynamic union of pure tradition with creative innovation that has empowered the Tibetan community in exile, and has inspired so much admiration and interest from the outside world. The tour of the Khachoe Ghakyil nuns is a perfect example of this vital process of innovative cultural preservation. In old Tibet there were many nunneries, but they carried on as poor sisters, always in the shadows of the great monasteries, which were filled with thousands of monks and led by famous, learned lamas.

Tibet - Culture In Exile By Jan Oberg

Everyone driving must turn around at the bus and cab station. Dharamsala is actually car-free, peaceful, chaotic and characterised by an astounding pioneering spirit. The street scene is dominated by monks in wine-red clothes and a remarkably great number of beggars with leprousy. On this dangerous, Himalayan slope, fantastic architectural constructions, often hotels, are being built. But they are said to collapse quicker than they have been built, when heavy rains or glacier-melt water come down in torrents. Everything is beautiful around here, except the trees. It is forbidden to cut down their very trunk, but everywhere people have climbed up and chopped off all their limbs. After all, they need firewood. Power cuts happen on a daily basis and, of course, electricity is rationed - except when the governor of the federal state of Himachal Pradesh, to which Dharamsala belongs, descends on his subjects for an official visit. At those times water and electricity is available around the clock. Apparently he is not supposed to get an excessively realistic picture of the local peoples' everyday life!

July 29, 2002 The graduation of the first group of postgraduates from colleges in Tibet Autonomous Region has proved that local institutions of higher learning have become sacred sites where traditional Tibetan culture is carried forward and developed. The 10 postgraduates, all Tibetans, completed their post-graduate studies and were awarded graduation and master's degree certificates on July 17. They majored in Tibetology, the history of the Tibetan ethnic group, Tibetan language and Tibetan medicine which constitute the core of Tibetan culture over the past three years. Their success shows that Tibetans can promote and carry forward their traditional culture in pace with the times. This was unimaginable in the past, however. Before the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, there was not a single school in Tibet in a modern sense and education was only a tool controlled and manipulated by temples, with some people taught in private schools. Tibetan culture and art were made to cater to the nobles and high officials, and the feudal serfdom shackled the spread and growth of fine Tibetan culture. King Gesar, the longest epic poem in the world, was then only handed down orally by folk ballad singers, who, at the bottom of the social ladder, could only make a living by singing the story of King Gesar, the legendary hero of the Tibetan ethnic group. Butthe ballad-singing was regarded by the nobles as "beggars' hurly-burlies".
