'Dalai Lama Thanks India For Helping To Preserve Tibetan Culture'

(Times of India. March 13, 2000)
Dalai Lama stands to attention as Tibetan children sing the Indian National anthem during the inauguration of the Festival of Tibte at the Birla Matushri Hall in Mumbai on Sunday (ToI Pic: Santosh Bane) 'We regard India as a guru and consider ourselved disciples of India,' Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama said on Sunday. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 'Festival of Tibet' at the Birla Matushri Hall. The six-day festival, which begins on Monday, has been organised by the Friends of Tibet (INDIA) and Tibetan Youth Congress. The Dalai Lama was introduced to a packed audience by industrialist Mukesh Ambani who described him as the 'epitome of peace and goodwill among all nations' and 'a messenger of Lord Buddha's message of peace'. The Dalai Lama, however, said he was just a practitioner of the Buddha's dharma and was like any other human being. 'I am not special,' he said, adding it was very important to realise that all human beings have the same potential. 'It is very important to utilise your good potential and you will be a happy person.' The festival, which aims at showcasing the unique and endangered culture of Tibet, was given a personal touch by the Dalai Lama who spoke at length about the great bond between India and Tibet. The spiritual leader noted that in the past few years, intentionally or otherwise, though a cultural genocide was taking place, the Indian government and the country's citizens had helped preserve the culture of his land. The festival, through its various exhibitions and film screenings, will highlight the intermingling and shared evolution of Indian and Tibetan cultures. 'There are many poems in Tibetan, that mention things of Indian origin like the Ganges,' the Dalai Lama observed, adding, in a lighter vein, that no one mention the Great Wall of China.

Common Voice: Volume 2 (1992) Tibetan culture: nature and process Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche The word "Culture" comprehends a settled meaning in the west which in close parlance with the law of western life-style and way of thinking could not familiarise itself with the eastern people in spite of its massive use in modern times in oriental languages. The difference has been one of approach: The easterners have at no time viewed human life and its attributes from the angle of vision with which people in the west have looked at its meaning. In the course of interaction with western civilization, the expression culture borrowed from western languages and used as a medium of communication commuted with equivalent terms as coined in various eastern languages, such for instance as "Sanskriti" in the Indian languages and "Rig-gsung" in Tibetan but, again with the enigmatic only made purposeful. And, yet the eastern expressions for culture are intelligible in their own conceptual meaning. That is why we find so much gap of communication among the various civilised groups in interacting on basic ideas conveyed by this normative expression. As being securely entrenched by virtue and predilection of Tibetan Scholarship I am tuned to the expression of culture as "Sanskriti" which is not analogous with culture of the western science.

Interview with Jigme Topgyal, Preserver of Tibetan Culture
Globalization from the perspective of a Tibetan refugee.
Jigme Topgyal is the co-founder of the NW Tibetan Cultural Association and is in the process of building a world peace center and a four-year Tibetan college in Portland, Oregon. His goal is to teach the younger generation about Tibetan culture, as culture is the heart and soul of a people, and if you lose that, you have lost everything.
When I was twelve years old, I became a refugee. I left because of the Chinese occupation of my country, Tibet. I have seen a lot of things: many of my friends were killed right next to me. I believe that you have to do something good with your life because that is the point of living—you try to do something, whatever you can for another human being. Globalization
Globalization has a good side and a bad side. The bad side is that the world cannot live with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Globalization has a side effect in the short term— it may hurt a small country by affecting the traditions of this country. For instance, Tibetans live out in the country with their own farms and animals. Due to global competition, these communities are sometimes adversely affected and the countryside has economic problems because of inflation. Often people from these rural areas can no longer work on farms, so they go to cities, and if they can’t get jobs, their families are destroyed. Globalization has to go hand in hand with liberty and justice. This is the 21st century and there is still so much oppression occurring in our world. For example, in Tibet under Communist Chinese rule, there is not a lot of attention paid to human rights or to an individual’s freedom. I hope that globalization can create a unique world that takes care of this oppression. Eventually the goal of globalization should be to fight less and to become one world, for example the integration of the European countries into the EU. Globalization is the way to create world peace. It means working together, because we all need happiness, whether you are rich or poor. Ultimately globalization is the way to do this, to live in unity and to make sure not to leave countries behind, or else soon they will hate the rich countries. The ultimate goal of globalization should be to create harmony. Peace is a lot cheaper than war.

Tibet has an ancient and distinctive cultural tradition and an abundant and colorful heritage of literature and the arts, Tibetan people are accomplished at singing and dancing, Tibetan women have played an important part in carrying on and spreading Tibetan culture and art.
''King Gesar'', the world's longest epic created by the Tibetan people, existed only as an oral history among the Tibetan people and was performed using dialogue and pinging. It has incorporated almost all the strong points of the Tibetan folk literature.
Among the well-known performers of the epic is a woman named Gyu-me. Through dialogue and singing, she can present more than 100 vivid personalities.
Gyu-me was born in 1959 Sog County. Her father was a famous performer for "King Gesar"' but he died while still fairly yoinng. Gyu-me herself can sing 70 parts of this epic. In 1981 she was invited to Lhasa to record the epic. By 1989 she had already recorded ten parts, which totalled 4 million words, including the ''Fighting in Talin''. Her contribution has provided a means to study this epic. Today the retrieval, collation and study of this epic has been included in the state's key social science research projects.
Yeshe Dolma, a Tibetan writer, has made a remarkable contribution to the contemporary literature. As a state's first rank author, both of her scenario, ''Ai the Remote Pasture'' and the short story ''Beauty and Ugliness'' have won the national award.

Tibet News Tibetan culture addressed at lecture By The Penn Online-By BILL HARDER Apr 14, 2004, 18:45 Email this article Print this article Before the extended weekend, students caught a glimpse of Tibetan culture. "Visions of Sacred Spaces and Places" was a lecture delivered by Andrew Quintman, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, in Eberly Auditorium April 8. The lecture focused on the way in which the natural environment of Tibet is linked to its history. The program was sponsored by the Asian Studies Committee. Chairwoman of the committee Eleanor Mannikka, art professor and Quintman's mother-in-law, said there are very few people in the area who could give such a lecture, and it was a matter of timing that Quintman was able to give the lecture as he traveled through Indiana. Mannikka described Quintman as an "Indiana Jones of Tibet."

LHASA: The graduation of the first group of postgraduates from colleges in the Tibet Autonomous Region has shown that local institutions of higher learning have become an important training ground for traditional Tibetan culture.
The 10 Tibetan postgraduates completed their studies and were awarded master's degrees on July 17. They majored in Tibetology, the history of the Tibetan ethnic group and Tibetan language and Tibetan medicine.
Their success shows that traditional culture is vital in these modern times.
But their success was practically unimaginable half a century ago. Before the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, there was not a single modern institutional school in Tibet and education was only a tool controlled and manipulated by temples. Tibetan culture and art were made to cater to the nobles and high officials, and feudal serfdom shackled the growth of Tibetan culture.
King Gesar, the longest epic poem in the world, was then only handed down orally by ballad folk singers, who were at the bottom of the social ladder and could only make a living by singing the story of the legendary hero of the Tibetan ethnic group. Ballad-singing was regarded by the nobles as "beggars' activities."

Sailing the Turkish Coast Road to Dharamshala ... Asia Resources DESTINATIONS A Walk in Dharamshala Sanctuary for Tibetan Culture By Daniel Kaplan An ongoing correspondence from GORP contributor Dan Kaplan, as he travels the ancient Silk Routes across southern Asia. A smiling young monk walks slowly up the cobbled street, fingering wooden prayer beads beneath his maroon robe. When we pass, I hear him muttering mantras under his breath. A refreshing morning breeze sweeps down from the mountains, making the prayer flags flap crisply around me. I wind my way down Temple Road to the monastery. To my right, an aged, wrinkled nun takes baby steps around a holy gompa. She reaches with arthritic effort to spin a prayer wheel. The red and black Tibetan script blurs as she moves on to the next wheel. The smell of incense wafts into the street, and I overhear rumors that His Holiness the Dalai Lama may make a public appearance tomorrow. As a young man, the Dalai Lama escaped Tibet in 1959, and was welcomed by the Indian government, who established the young leader in this former British hill station, secure from their common enemy. Tens of thousands of refugees have since followed His Holiness into exile, and with international attention drawn to Tibet over the last decade, Dharamshala has become a popular travel destination.
