A Kham Aid Foundation Report
by Pamela Logan, November, 1998 Anyone traveling through Kham is struck by the region's beautiful houses. Made of traditional materials in diverse styles, Tibetan homes in Kham are handsome, spacious, and well adapted to their environment. What distinguishes them most from the houses of central Tibet is the abundant and skillful use of wood. Kham has always possessed great forests, wood is an excellent building material, therefore carpentry skills in Kham have been developed to a high degree. House, Baiyu County. The Chinese-style tile roofs are not common in Kham, but areincreasing in popularity because they are more rain-proof than traditional flat roofs. A less lavish house is visible to the right rear. Sometime around 600 A.D., the legend goes, King Ligmagya of Zhang Zhung
married Semokar, sister of ambitious Tibetan leader Songsten Gampo. It
was a classic union of state, intended to rid Ligmagya of a potential
    rival by co-opting him.
Except Semokar did not like living with Ligmagya on the bleak, windblown
plateau of northwestern Tibet. She importuned her brother to rescue her,
but Songsten Gampo did better than that. His assassins killed Ligmagya,
then turned Zhang Zhung into a vassal state ushering in a Tibetan empire that lasted 250 years. For much of modern history, the existence of Zhang Zhung was regarded mostly as a fictional prop in the legend of the empire's rise to prominence. Parts of the story may have been true, but it was written ex post facto by Tibetans, probably inflating what was originally a face-off between rival warlords.

The chupa keeps Tibetans warm through the long winter. It is a fur-lined dress or coat. Jalham are the shoes worn in summer and Lham are handmade leather shoes, with leather soles. A pangden is a plain or multi-coloured apron, worn by married women. Kuthung is the name for cotton trousers, Doethung is a long-sleeved shirt.
Monks wear a Tunga - maroon embroidered inner jacket, a Dzen -maroon loose robe/shawl, Sersha -yellow hat worn on special occasions by Gelukpa monks, Shamthap -maroon wrap-around cloth worn under the dzen, Sherdzompa -yellow, maroon colourful shoes, Ngulen -maroon sleeveless sweat shirt, Tengwa -brown prayer beads/rosary, made up of 108 beads, a prayer is said for each of the beads.
    Folk Songs
Tibetans love to sing. Here is an example of a song a girl and boy might sing to each other.
A boy sings: "Many bords are rushing to the willow tree, I can't rush. I will go to my silver birch" A girl sings: "You are the juniper of the opposite valley, I am the peacock of this valley. But a river runs between us. If you really want the peacock, you will have to make a bridge"
This song is about a girl, from the capital of Lhasa arrives in an isolated village or nomad area, all the local boys flock around her as she is different and girls from Lhasa have the reputation of being special. The boy singing this song though is not interested; he prefers to be with a local girl. The girl sings that the boy is very handsome ( like a sweet-smelling juniper bush), and she is beautiful (like a peacock ); but romance is not possible because there is some major problem that cannot be changed (the river dividing them). If you want us to get together, you will have to do something about it and solve the problem, she explains.

    http://tibet.ehosting.ca/re_Tethong.htm
OpEd Piece from T.C. Tethong on "China Tibetan Culture Week" Last week, Mr. Hughes Eng, Co-Chair of the China Tibetan Cultural Week, held a press conference in Toronto announcing an upcoming celebration of Tibetan culture in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. A quick reading of his media statement reveals all the usual elements of Chinese government propaganda, though the organizers of this event have done their best to promote China Tibetan Cultural Week as a community sponsored event. Eng claims that " over 80 Chinese Canadian community groups involving thousands of people, have worked together to bring the China Tibetan Cultural Week to Canada. " As a Tibetan who has lived in Canada since the mid-1970s with almost no contact or support from the Chinese community, I have to ask myself: Why suddenly the interest and display of compassion towards the Tibetans? Why the exuberance of this altruistic gesture to promote Tibetan culture to the Canadian people? What is most telling about this whole episode is the total absence of any Tibetans in the preparation of this event . There are several thousand Tibetan refugees living in Canada, most of whom live in Toronto, and yet to my knowledge, not one is involved with Mr. Eng or his associates.

    The Tibetan Flag
    Introduction
"The Tibetan national flag is intimately connected with the authentic history and royal lineages of Tibet which are thousands of years old. Furthermore, in the Tibetan Royal year 820 or in the seventh century of the Christian era, at the time of the Tibetan religious King Song-tzan Gampo the Great extensive land of Tibet was divided into large and small districts known as "g?-kyi tong-de" and "yung-g'i mi-de". From these large and small districts, an army of 2,860,000 men was chosen and stationed along the borders of Tibet, and the subjects thus lived in safety. The bravery and heroism of the Tibetan people at that time in conquering and ruling even the adjacent empire of China is well-known in world history. "At that time, it is recorded that the regiment of Yi-ru ti had a military flag with a pair of snow-lions facing each other; that Y?-ru m? had a snow-lion with a bright upper border; that of Tzang Ru-iao, had a snow-lion standing upright, springing towards the sky; and the flag of ?-ru t? had a white flame against a red background, and so forth. In this way. the regiments of each area had its own individual military standard. Continuing with that tradition up to the beginning of the twentieth century, various regiments within the Tibetan army have had military flags with either a pair of snow-lions facing each other, or a snow-lion springing upwards and so forth.
