Some reject tibetan culture altogether when they return to tibet and try to dress, speak and behave like Chinese. Back to the tibetan culture and Religion page.
http://www.tibet.org/Why/cultdestruct.html
Development and Cultural Destruction in Tibet
Paper read by Anders Hoejmark Andersen (The Tibet Support Committee, Denmark) at the "Social Development: A Tibetan Experience" conference in Copenhagen on 9 March 1995. One of the three main themes for the World Summit is Social integration. The report prepared for the Summit by the People's Republic of China takes up this issue with a readiness which shows its inherent dangers. The United Nations is comprised of nation-states, and nation-states naturally favour social and cultural coherence within themselves. To a large extent, the call for social integration will also lead to cultural unification if measures to avoid this are not spelled out clearly. In the case of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, such measures are not taken: the Tibetan people neither have human rights nor self-determination. The so-called unity of nationalities is a key element in China's policies towards Tibetans. After the occupation of Tibet in 1949 - 51, this policy meant the introduction of collectivisation under Chinese rule. These social changes brought about complete disruption of traditional Tibetan ways of life and of their social institutions. Systematic destruction of the more than 6,000 monasteries began, and monks and nuns were killed or forced to give up their vows. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were killed in warfare and by starvation, or they were executed because they resisted the policies being forced upon them.

Tibetans consider Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama to be the living embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, and their spiritual and temporal leader. Throughout more than 40 years of exile, the Dalai Lama has worked to promote international awareness of Tibet and a non-violent means of regaining Tibet's freedom. In 1988, the Dalai Lama put forward the "Strasbourg Proposal" in which he called for genuine autonomy for Tibet rather than complete independence - a major concession. The Government-in-Exile has drafted a constitution for an autonomous and democratic Tibet and holds elections for the Tibetan Parliament.

Tibetan culture gets a tech boost
A Silicon Valley firm jumps in to network a displaced community By Lisa Napoli
MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR
http://www.msnbc.com/news/737241.asp#BODY NEW YORK, April 11 - At a gala recently at the opulent Russian Tea Room in New York City, serene looking Tibetan monks rubbed elbows with suited clients of a Silicon Valley company that boasts about having survived the tech bust. This is a story about an unlikely marriage between philanthropy and capitalism, and how SCATTERED across Northern India, Nepal and Bhutan are 32 settlement camps, home to more than 122,000 Tibetan exiles displaced from their native land by Chinese troops, who invaded the country 50 years ago. Just last month, action was begun in earnest to install a computer in each of these settlements, and to wire each for Internet access. Part of the bill for this project is being paid by a Web-based customer relations management company, half a world away. The Tibetan Settlement Networking Project is far from complete, for some of the communities are so remote that phone access currently is spotty, if it exists at all. But the recent training of representatives from some of the camps, and the delivery of computers to them, is a major first step. The notion is that to preserve Tibetan culture, Tibetans must be able to communicate with one another. And in this digital age, communication equals computer - even in places where messages are often delivered by yak. "Mail is slow, and the settlements are so far from each other. Most of the time people get telephone lines for two hours a day," explained Richen Dharlo, president of the Tibet Fund, a nonprofit group based in New York which supports projects to help Tibetan exiles. Dharlo himself was 11 when he was forced to flee Tibet with his family after the Chinese invasion; his mother, grandmother, brother and other relatives died of malnutrition while they lived on a mountainside, not sure where to go next. (Eventually the survivors made their way to a settlement camp.)

Photo © Alison Wright Dear Friends, Forty years ago, following the occupation of Tibet, many Tibetans, including myself, left our home to live in exile. Since then, repressive policies and rule by force inside Tibet have brought our culture to the brink of extinction. In many cases, Tibetans have faced torture and death in order to protect precious symbols of our unique cultural heritage. The preservation of our cultural identity is a primary concern for all Tibetans. Growing international support for Tibet is a source of much encouragement to us. Still, the situation inside Tibet remains extremely grave. Though we continue our efforts to ensure Tibetan cultural survival, we need assistance. CTAC is working to create a better understanding of the people, culture and traditions of Tibet as well as the threat that confronts them. Tibet's culture, steeped in the compassion and non-violence of Buddhism, promotes happiness, peace of mind, respect for others, and concern for the environment. It forms a valuable part of the world's common heritage. Humanity would be poorer should it be lost. Tenzin Gyatso

    TIBET: A VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
(This site is available thanks to the Geology Department of Northern Arizona University . All opinions expressed are mine [J.H. Wittke] and not those of the people or institutions mentioned)
Inaccessible Tibet. These words conjure images of remote mountains inhabited by yeti and adepts who sit naked in the snow, warmed by elevated body temperatures. Tibet has remained a very difficult place to visit and is more fantastic than imagined. It is a land of immense contrasts: snowy peaks and sandy deserts, barren plateaus and forested mountains, empty expanses and crowded cities, and a deeply religious people ruled by an avowedly atheistic government. In June-July 1996, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and Cypress College (CA) in cooperation with the Chengdu Institute of Technology made Tibet accessible to a small group of geologists. We travelled from Chengdu (C), to Golmud (G), to Lhasa (L), to Katmandu (K). This virtual field trip attempts to capture the highlights of that trip, which was led by Associate Professor He Dashun, Professor Lin Maobing, and Associate Professor Wang Wenbin (all from Chengdu) and Dr. Dorothy L. Stout from Cypress College. Without the diligence of He Dashun and his associates, this wonderful trip would have been impossible. Ordering information for the slide set, Geology of Tibet and the Himalayan Orogen, is available at the NAGT Publications Page The Virtual Trip to Tibet can be taken in the original order by
