17. Thyroid Storm
NOTE: "We Can't Kill Your Mother" and Other Stories of Intensive Care can be downloaded in its entirety as an e-book from 1st Books Library ($4.95). The book can also be ordered in trade paperback format for $13.50. For purchasing the e-book or print versions, please go to 1st Books Library and enter part of the book's title or the author in their search engine. Below are the first few paragraphs of THYROID STORM. I'll never forget the patient Roberta Smith, a 35-year-old mother of two who presented to our emergency department with fever, confusion and a very fast heart beat. After a brief evaluation in the ED she was sent to MICU. As they rolled Mrs. Smith into MICU on a stretcher I could see her problem. Set inside a thin face of smooth and shiny complexion were eyes that bulged like a frog's. A large mass straddled her windpipe and neck veins on either side pulsated rapidly with the rhythm of her heart. She manifested the classic picture of an extremely overactive thyroid gland, so extreme as to deserve the appellation `thyroid storm.' I examined the ED ledger and x-rays while the nurses put her to bed. The admitting diagnosis was actually pneumonia, with "possible hyperthyroidism" a secondary diagnosis. On chest x-ray her pneumonia showed up as a hazy infiltrate in one lung.

The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Thyroid Disease and the Eye Graves' disease, a condition in which the thyroid gland is hyperactive, is rarely a life-threatening condition. Although Graves' disease may develop at any age and in either sex, it most often affects women 20 to 60 years old.
The disease can affect the thyroid gland, eyes, and skin. Unfortunately, the cause of Graves' disease is unknown. Current research, however, suggests that a defect in the immune system may be the underlying cause of the disorder. Normally, the immune system uses antibodies (protein substances that the body makes) to help protect itself against viruses, bacteria, and foreign substances (antigens) that invade the body. In Graves' disease the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, eyes, and skin of the lower legs causing the disease's symptoms. The Thyroid Gland The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located just in front and on each side of the windpipe just above the breast bone. The gland releases chemical messengers called hormones into the blood. These hormones influence body processes such as: Rate of metabolism
Body temperature
Muscle tone and vigor
Growth hormone secretions Normally thyroid activity is directed by the pituitary gland. In Graves' disease the thyroid is instead driven by an antibody. This antibody triggers the thyroid to become overactive and produce more hormones than the body needs. Symptoms of this overactivity, called hyperthyroidism, may include:

Now, 6 years later, I am still going strong and fighting this rare disease, finding strength and courage by looking for whatever good I can find in the bad. One of the amazing things that has happened to me as a result of the cancer is that when I went "hypothyroid" (off my thyroid hormone for several weeks) for a scan

Thyroid Cancer
Revised 1 May by Furio Pacini, M.D., and Leslie J. De Groot, M.D.

Incidence and Distribution
The annual incidence of thyroid cancer varies considerably in different registries, ranging from 1.2-2.6 per 100,000 individuals in men and from 2.0-3.8 per 100,000 in women (92, 93). It is particularly elevated in Iceland and Hawaii, being nearly two times higher than in North European countries, Canada and the USA. In Hawaii, the incidence rate of thyroid cancer in each ethnic group is higher than that registered in their country of origin (94), and it is particularly common among Chinese males and Filipino females. Most of the differences are probably due to ethnic or environmental factors (such as spontaneous background radiation) or dietary habits (95), but different standards of medical expertise and health care may also play a role in the efficiency of cancer detection. The American Cancer Society indicated incidence in the USA of nearly 10/100,000 population in 2003. The reported incidence has been increasing at more than 5%/yr for a decade. The annual mortality from thyroid cancer in 2003 was 5 per million for men and 6 per million for women (98). The discrepancy between incidence and mortality reflects the good prognosis for most thyroid cancers. Recent statistics suggest about 6 deaths /million in the USA.

175. Welcome To Swan Collies
Small Collie Kennel dedicated to Showing and Breeding Collies of Exceptional Health and Temperament who excell in the Conformation ring, Obedience and Therapy work. All normaleyed, normal thyroid.

Here at Swan Collies, we breed infrequently and with the intent of producing normal-eyed collies of correct conformation, genetic health, correct head properties, and sound temperament. Health, temperament, and beauty are all equally important goals in our breeding program. We screen for hips, thyroid function, cardiac function and CEA. Pedigrees are carefully researched and paired before any breedings are undertaken. Pedigrees on available pups can be sent upon request, but prospective owners must be able to meet certain requirements before adding a Swan Collie puppy to their family. Quality of life is of UTMOST importance in the placement of our puppies. All dogs sold are placed with a health guarantee.
"Quality, not quantity" is a concept followed here.
The number of genetic diseases in the collie breed has increased dramatically over the last 20 years. Buyers need to be aware of health issues in the breed and ask many questions before committing to buying a collie for their family.
I feel that anyone interested in purchasing a collie would do well to look to the kennels that have been around a long time. Quality not only shows, it lasts. A great deal can be gleaned from watching and emulating those who have consistently produced healthy, winning stock through the years.
