by Dr. John C. Lowe Readers' Comments Your Guide to Metabolic Health Thyroid Hormone Molecules Welcome to Our Website Site Search Engine: powered by FreeFind Our website is about " metabolic health ." We define metabolic health in this way: A state in which the chemical processes in our cells are sufficient to provide us with at least two things: (1) resistance to sickness and disease, and (2) the vigor, stamina, and well-being needed to fully engage in all aspects of life. At drlowe.com , we focus on what impairs metabolic health, how to recover it, and how to optimize it. We include a large amount of information on two common and potent causes of poor metabolic health— hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone resistance . We also include information on other causes of poor metabolic health. Among the causes are poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, low physical fitness, hormone imbalances, and various medications and environmental pollutants.

One of the most pervasive myths about Chernobyl is that only 3% of the reactor core was released into the biosphere when the explosion occurred on April 26, 1986. Vladimir Chernousenko, Scientific Director of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences' Task Force for the Rectification of the Consequences of the Accident, in his 1991 book Chernobyl, Insight from the Inside, dispels this myth (and a partial list of 20 others ), citing, A more official view on `The Nuclear Accident in Block 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station and the Safety of the RBMK Reactor' give[s] the following excerpts from an unpublished report by A.A. Yadrikhinskii, Nuclear Safety Inspection Engineer of the USSR State Atomic Energy Survey Commission (Kurchatov town, RSFSR February, 1988): . . . Radiation emission was no less that 80% of the core (with a total of 192 tons), which amounted to 6.4 x 10^9 Ci.[16] If we divide the figure by the population of the whole earth (4.6 x 10^9 people) then we get 1 Ci per person.[17]

Skin problems associated with thyroid disease
Overactivity and underactivity of the thyroid gland may result in alterations in skin, hair or the nails. This may be as a result of the abnormal level of thyroid hormone, or a consequence of an underlying condition.
    Thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid gland)
Excess thyroid hormone (thyroxine) may be due to:
    • Graves disease A thyroid nodule Excessive intake of thyroxine medication.
Thyrotoxicosis results in an increase in metabolic rate. This may result in:
    • Smooth, moist, warm skin Flushing of face and hands Overgrown nails which may lift off the nail bed (onycholysis) Fine soft thinned scalp hair Generalised itching Urticaria Increased skin pigmentation
Graves disease can be associated with vitiligo Pretibial myxoedema affects 5% of patients with Graves disease. This may appear before, during or after the thyrotoxic state. It may also be associated with an underactive thyroid. Pretibial myxoedema presents with a lumpy appearance over the shins. The skin may be discoloured pink or purple, with prominent hair follicles. It may have a warty appearance. It is thought to be caused by autoantibodies - these are the mistaken immune cells which cause Graves disease. The result is a thickened and inelastic skin which is filled with excessive hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate.

    Phytoestrogens
    Anti-thyroid agents
We're sick of hearing that there are no harmful effects of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens disrupt thyroid function. (Read the British Food Standards Agencies Committee on Toxicity Report Here) Theodore Kay of the Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine noted in 1988 that 'thyroid enlargement in rats and humans, especially children and women, fed with soybeans has been known for half a century'. In fact, thyroid problems associated with soy were also well known to bird-breeders , which is how Soy Online Service first became aware of the goitrogenicity of soy. Well known, but that fact seemed to escape manufacturers of the first commercially available soy formulas. Those formulas were known to cause in goitre in infants and one can only wonder how many other infants were left hypothyroid or suffering from permanent thyroid damage by soy formulas. The iodine levels in soy formulas were increased and instances of goitre in infants fed these products ceased. However, there appears to have been no attempt to isolate or remove the goitrogenic properties from soy formulas. This is of grave concern because, although elevated iodine levels would have helped to nullify the effects of the goitrogens, the goitrogens would still have been actively suppressing thyroid function in infants. Hence millions of babies (particularly in the United States where soy formula feeding is most common) have needlessly been exposed to goitrogenic agents; Soy Online Service believe that infants fed soy formulas unnecessarily risk abnormal thyroid function and a greater risk of thyroid disease in later life.

    What Is the Thyroid?
The thyroid is a gland in the low, front part of the neck which produces special "thyroid hormones" necessarily for life. The thyroid gets it's "instructions" on how much hormone to produce by a chemical message sent from the mid-brain pituitary gland. The thyroid is located in the middle of the low neck, overlying the windpipe (" trachea "). It is composed of 2 "lobes", with the lobes joined together at the lower third by by a connecting "Ithmus" and covered by cartilage, The thyroid connects to this tough, thick cartilage, called the "thyroid cartilage". This cartilage provides some barrier to the local spread of a thyroid cancer. The blood supply to the thyroid is from the "inferior" (lower) and "superior" (upper) thyroid arteries. These emanate from the "thyroid axis", which is a branch of the large "subciavian artery" coming off of the aorta from the heart. The thyroid veins that drain blood from the thyroid form a network (" plexus ") on the surface of the organ and empty into the "jugular veins", which return it to the heart. Infections or cancer can thus be spead via the bloodstream ("

Thyroid Dysfunction as a Cause of Aggression in Dogs and Cats
Presented at the 43. Jahrestagung der Deutschen Veterinarmedizinischen
    Gesellschaft Fachgruppe Kleintierkrankheiten
29-31 August 1997 in HCC Hannover While much has been written about the behavioral signs of hyperthyroidism in cats, the hypothyroid dog has been depicted, from a behavioral standpoint, as being lethargic and mentally dull. The hypothyroid human patient has been reported to show a wider range of behavioral symptoms. Particularly in the early stages of the disease reduced cognitive function and concentration together with impaired short-term memory may be confused with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, and in one study 66% of patients diagnosed with ADBD were found to be hypothyroid. Supplementing their thyroid levels was largely curative. Visual and auditory hallucinations may result from altered perception and have been misdiagnosed as schizophrenia or psychosis. Other behavioral symptoms have included fear - ranging from mild anxiety to frank paranoia, mood swings and aggression. Scattered reports of aggression and hyperactivity in hypothyroid dogs suggested that dogs also might exhibit a wider repertoire of behaviors in response to low thyroid levels. Hypothyroidism is the most prevalent endocrine disease in dogs. In a 1994 survey conducted by the American Kennel Club of its parent breed clubs, hypothyroidism was found to be the health issue of greatest concern overall, as well as for each of the seven groups except for the toy dog group, where it was rated fourth in importance. Despite the debate concerning diagnosis the condition is widespread throughout the canine, and probably the equine, population.

    159. Thyroid Problem In Dog
Back to Newsletter. thyroid Problem in Dog. It should also be noted thatmany holistic vets believe thyroid problem is caused by vaccinations.
    http://ighawaii.com/naturally/newsletter/thyroid.html
Back to Newsletter Thyroid Problem in Dog At this year's AHVMA conference, Dr. Jean Dodds represented Canine Autoimmune Thyroiditis and Behavioral Changes associated with Thyroid Dysfunction in Dog. Hypothyroid is the most common disorder in dogs. Her collected data from January 1995 to January 1999 of 1060 canine case of auto immune thyroiditis, it shows 96% are pure breed dogs. The average age was 4.5 years. And 12 breeds most affected were the Golden Retriever, Shetland Sheepdog, American Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Akita, Irish Setter, English Setter, Old English Sheepdog and Collie. It should also be noted that many holistic vets believe thyroid problem is caused by vaccinations. They are seen high case of hypothyroid in dogs and hyperthyroid in cats. Dr. Dodds showed a set of slides of thyroid gland in different stage of thyroid problem. When you see an abnormality in T3, T4 tests, the condition is often in progressed stage. And in this stage, the animals would have to stay on the medication for rest of their life. We need to recognize the sign of thyroid while it's in the early stage in order to bring it back to normal. Dogs with thyroid dysfunction show aberrant behavior problem. You may notice your dog have unprovoked aggression towards people/animals, sudden onset of a seizure disorder in adulthood, disorientation, moodiness, erratic temperament, period of hyperactivity, hypoattentiveness, depression, fearfulness and phobias, anxiety, submissiveness, passivity, compulsiveness and irritability. The specialized function, such as scent and attention will go first. So if you are training your dog for obedience or tracking, you may notice the poor performance in your dog. It will also show up in skin and coat conditions such as dry, crusty, scaly skin. The end result can be a dog
