How to interpret your blood test results Review your lab test results Overview Glucose Electrolytes Waste Products Enzymes Proteins Blood Fats Minerals Thyroid Glycohemoglobin CBC Risk Factors Urinalysis Overview Laboratory tests are tools helpful in evaluating the health status of an individual. It is important to realize that laboratory results may be outside of the so-called "normal range" for many reasons. These variations may be due to such things as race, dietetic preference, age, sex, menstrual cycle, degree of physical activity, problems with collection and/or handling of the specimen, non-prescription drugs (aspirin, cold medications, vitamins, etc.), prescription drugs, alcohol intake and a number of non-illness-related factors, Any unusual or abnormal results should be discussed with your physician. It is not possible to diagnose or treat any disease or problem with this blood test alone. It can, however, help you to learn more about your body and detect potential problems in early stages when treatment or changes in personal habits can be most effective. Our lab, like almost all labs, sets the normal result range for a particular test so that 95% of our healthy patients fall within the normal range. That means that 5% of our healthy patients fall outside of the normal range, even when there is nothing wrong with them. Thus an abnormal test does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with you. Statistically if you have 20 or 30 individual tests run as part of a panel, chances are 1 or 2 will be slightly outside the normal range. Part of what you see your doctor for is to interpret whether or not these changes are significant.

Screening for Thyroid Disease RECOMMENDATION Routine screening for thyroid disease with thyroid function tests is not recommended for asymptomatic children or adults. There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening for thyroid disease with thyroid function tests in high-risk patients, but recommendations may be made on other grounds (see Clinical Intervention). Clinicians should remain alert to subtle symptoms and signs of thyroid dysfunction when examining such patients. Screening for congenital hypothyroidism is discussed in Chapter 45. Burden of Suffering
Subclinical hyperthyroidism, recognized by a subnormal TSH level, is seen in 0.2-5% of the elderly population; Û 1%/year progress to overt disease.11,40,55,56 Subnormal levels of TSH are often transient, returning to normal without intervention.3,25,57 There is limited evidence of risk from subclinical hyperthyroidism except when it is due to excessive thyroxine replacement. Case series have reported subclinical hyperthyroidism in a number of patients with atrial fibrillation.58-61 Older controlled observational studies found no association between subclinical hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation,62,63 but a significant association was reported in one carefully controlled cohort study that used a sensitive TSH assay.57 One controlled study reported a significantly lower total cholesterol level in patients with a subnormal TSH level,51 suggesting a possible benefit of this condition.

Kostelic undergoes thyroid surgery
Story Tools Zagreb, CROATIA Injury-plagued Croatian skiing champion Janica Kostelic has undergone surgery on her thyroid gland. Croatian team spokesman Ozren Mueller confirmed that the operation had been successfully completed. "The surgery is over, everything went well and Janica has woken up," said Mueller. The 22-year-old won her second overall World Cup title last year but has also required four knee operations since then and is set to miss the whole of the current season. Kostelic is expected to be able to start training again in four or five weeks, although she is unlikely to return to racing before the end of the season in mid-March.

Each year in the United States, thyroid cancer is diagnosed in 14,900 women and 4,600 men. This booklet discusses possible causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and followup care. It also has information to help patients cope with thyroid cancer. Research is increasing what we know about thyroid cancer. Scientists are studying its causes. They are also looking for better ways to detect, diagnose, and treat this disease. Because of research, people with thyroid cancer can look forward to a better quality of life and less chance of dying from the disease.

The Thyroid Hormone Receptor Resource
The Thyroid Hormone Receptor Resource (TRR) is a component of the Nuclear Hormone Receptor Resource project, which currently also includes the Glucocorticoid Receptor Resource organized by Mark Danielsen, the Mineralocorticoid Receptor Resource organized by David Pearce and the Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (PPAR) Resource organized by Jack Vanden Heuvel. The Androgen Receptor Mutations Database curated by Dr. Bruce Gottlieb has also joined this project, and Eddie Sanchez is generating a new Steroid Receptor Associated Proteins Resource , which is currently directed toward the complexes formed by the steroid receptors in the absence of ligand.
As indicated by the links below, the TRR provides a variety of information on TRs as well as more general information shared with other NHRR sites. It is anticipated that the TRR will publish general comments, essays and data that members of the scientific community would like to make generally available. Please feel free to submit such items via e-mail using the link below. Thyroid earns blame for symptoms
March 24, 1998 BY LOREN WISSNER GREENE
Associated Press Tired. Forgetful. Slightly depressed. How many women wouldn't admit to feeling like that at least some of the time? But most probably wouldn't think of having a simple blood test to determine if their thyroid is causing those problems. And they should. As many as 10 percent of women suffer from an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, by the time they turn 50, with the incidence rising to 17 percent by age 60. The disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid is less common in men. The symptoms of an underactive thyroid can resemble other health problems like chronic fatigue syndrome, anemia or depression. People often attribute their illness to a fast-paced lifestyle. And because the chances of developing the disease increase with age, many women dismiss the symptoms as signs of aging. Too many patients and doctors overlook the fact that this tiny gland at the base of your neck can wreak so much havoc.
