The thyroid gland is the biggest gland in the neck. It is situated in the anterior (front) neck below the skin and muscle layers. The thyroid gland takes the shape of a butterfly with the two wings being represented by the left and right thyroid lobes which wrap around the trachea. The sole function of the thyroid is to make thyroid hormone. This hormone has an effect on nearly all tissues of the body where it increases cellular activity. The function of the thyroid therefore is to regulate the body's metabolism.

Common Thyroid Problems
The thyroid gland is prone to several very distinct problems, some of which are extremely common. These problems can be broken down into those concerning the production of hormone (too much, or too little), those due to increased growth of the thyroid causing compression of important neck structures or simply appearing as a mass in the neck, the formation of nodules or lumps within the thyroid which are worrisome for the presence of thyroid cancer, and those which are cancerous. Each thyroid topic is addressed separately and illustrated with actual patient x-rays and pictures to make them easier to understand. The information on this web site is arranged to give you more detailed and complex information as you read further.

THYROID DISORDERS
Your thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located just below your Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that affect your body's metabolism and energy level. Thyroid problems are among the most common medical conditions but, because their symptoms often appear gradually, they are commonly misdiagnosed. The three most common thyroid problems are the underactive thyroid , the overactive thyroid and thyroid nodules
HYPOTHYROIDISM (Underactive thyroid)
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.
Common symptoms of hypothyroidism are:
  • Fatigue or lack of energy Weight gain Feeling cold Dry skin and hair Heavy menstrual periods Constipation Slowed thinking
D IAGNOSIS of hypothyroidism is usually straightforward, once it is suspected. Patients with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis have an elevated level of serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). However, the rare patient with hypothyroidism due to a pituitary or hypothalamic condition may have a normal or low serum TSH. T REATMENT of hypothyroidism consists of taking thyroid hormone in pill form on a daily basis. Symptoms of hypothyroidism should clear up within a few months of starting treatment. Adjustment of the dose of thyroid pills is based upon measurements of serum TSH. Most patients need to take thyroid hormone for life.

What is the thyroid and why should I worry about it?
The thyroid is a small gland in the neck, just under the Adam's apple. Shaped like a butterfly, the thyroid plays an important role in a person's health and affects every organ, tissue, and cell in the body. It makes hormones that help to regulate the body's metabolism (how the body uses and stores energy from foods eaten) and organ functions. When the thyroid is not working properly (called thyroid disorder ), it can affect your body weight, energy level, muscle strength, skin health, menstrual cycle (periods), memory, heart rate, and cholesterol level. Thyroid disorders happen: when the thyroid gland is not as active as it should be (called underactive thyroid ); when the thyroid is more active than it should be (called

Alternative Approaches, Home Remedies, and Herbs for Women Your body knows more about menopause than your doctor does! THE MENOPAUSAL YEARS by Susun Weed
excerpt from NEW Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way
What Are the Menopausal Years?

Human females are unique from all other females on two counts (at least): we menstruate; and we cease to be reproductively available after we've lived only half our life span. (Estrus bleeding in dogs is not menstruation.) The ancient women's mysteries tell us of the powers and initiations of these unique events: menstruation and menopause. This book focuses on the latter - the years of transformation from potential mother to wise, whole crone - the menopausal years.
Meno (menstruation) pause (stops) is, technically, the last menstrual flow of a woman's life. The years just before and just after the menopause itself are referred to as the climacteric. For most women the climacteric spans from early/mid 40s to late 50s/early 60s, including the premenopausal years, the menopausal climax years, and the post-menopausal years, popularly known as the Change of Life.
This Change is a metamorphosis (complete change at a cellular level). This metamorphosis follows, and may even be the matrix for, the three classic stages of initiation: isolation, death, and rebirth/reintegration. Each woman's Change includes these three stages, as well as three phases (before menopause, during menopause, and after menopause).

Estimated Exposures and Thyroid Doses Received by the American People from Iodine-131 in Fallout Following Nevada Atmospheric Nuclear Bomb Tests is a report from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The report contains results from a study to assess Americans' exposures to radioactive iodine-131 fallout from atmospheric nuclear bomb tests carried out at the Nevada Test Site in the 1950s and 1960s. This report was mandated by Congress under Public Law 97-414. Results of the study show that, depending on their age at the time of the tests, where they lived, and what foods they consumed, particularly milk, Americans were exposed to varying levels of I-131 for about two months following each of the 90 tests. The report, published in full on this website, provides the technical details of this study.
