HIST 6338: Issues In Transatlantic History Instructors: Buisseret, Narrett, Reinhardt, Reinhartz Course Description This course will provide students entering the Ph.D. program with an introduction to Transatlantic History by emphasizing the interchange among the peoples of the continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean from the earliest contacts until the present. Taught by four different instructors, the course will survey the major themes that students will explore in greater depth in the colloquium courses 6301 and 6302. Goals and Objectives This core course will introduce students to the main concepts in the study of Transatlantic History. Here they will consider the nature of African, American, and European societies on the eve of expansion, study the motivation and the means used by Europeans in their expansion to the New World, and then survey the immediate and long-term effects of the encounters in different parts of the Americas. This course will also examine theories about syncretic developments, variously described as "acculturation" and "creolization." Art. I. The Life of David Thompson
The travels and explorations of this intrepid explorer are recounted.
David Thompson was born in London, England, on April 30, 1770. His parents were Welsh, and of little means. His father died when he was two, and at the tender age of seven, he was enrolled by his mother in the historic 'Grey Coat' charity school near Westminster Abbey. Having shown an aptitude for mathematics, his education was oriented towards preparing him for life as a midshipman in the Royal Navy. His studies included algebra, trigonometry, geography, and navigation using 'practical astronomy'. Over the years, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) made periodic requests to the school for students to be apprenticed to the North American fur trade. Many of these students would later receive training from Philip Turnor, the HBC's first chief surveyor. Among these pupils were Joseph Hansom, George Hudson, John Hodgson, and George Donald. As Thompson neared the end of his education, the Hudson's Bay Company asked for four more apprentices. Only two were eligible at that time ; one of them was the fourteen-year-old David Thompson. In May 1784, he set sail for Hudson's Bay aboard the Prince Rupert . He never saw his mother or England again. It is not known what duties he may have performed during the voyage, but he owned a Hadley's quadrant when he left England, presented to him when he finished school. The Hadley's quadrant was a double-mirrored navigational instrument which could measure angles up to ninety degrees. In 1785, he had to leave this quadrant behind at Churchill when he was transferred to York Factory, expecting it to be forwarded to him eventually. He apparently never used it again, since in 1790 it was requisitioned by Joseph Colen for use aboard the York Factory sloop. Thompson's early work in America did not include surveying. He later wrote '[in 1789] I regained my mathematical education...', suggesting he had become quite rusty (Glover, 55).

David Thompson Receives Viola R. MacMillan Developer's Award
This year, the PDAC has chosen David Thompson to receive the Viola MacMillan award. David is a giant in Canada 's mineral industry. 25 years ago he became chief financial officer of Teck Corporation. During that quarter century, he played a dominant role in Teck's spectacular growth and development, efficiently and prudently managing the company's financial affairs. Nine years ago, David became CEO of Teck's affiliate, Cominco Ltd. And again demonstrated his business acumen by transforming the company into a successful world leader in zinc. Today, David is deputy chairman and CEO of Teck Cominco Limited, a major Canadian mining company with an international reach. The company holds interests in thirteen producing mines in Canada , the U.S. and Peru with a new underground gold mine on the horizon. The company is also actively involved in exploring for mineral deposits throughout the world and has exploration offices in nine countries. Mr. Thompson is known throughout the industry for his integrity and ability, and has been described as having "the sharpest pencil in the business." According to one supporter, David "has likely contributed as much by the transactions he didn't do as those transactions he did." This ability has served the shareholders of Teck and Cominco well.

    Introduction
The first bonds between Norway and the United States were formed when Leiv Eiriksson set foot on the American shore 1,000 years ago. The Viking sagas tell the story of the vision and bravery that led the Norse seafarers to journey across the Atlantic. Centuries later, a wave of Norwegian immigrants followed, searching for economic prosperity along with greater opportunity. With them, they brought their ethnic identity, and, through hard work and innovation, they made distinct contributions to the development of modern America. During the 20th century, ties between our countries have further developed and strengthened.
As allies in World War II and later as founding members of NATO, we have pursued our common goal of a peaceful world. Together we face the 21st century as modern and prosperous nations. This brochure features many of the close political, economic and cultural links that exist between Norway and the United States. These common bonds create a strong foundation for the future.

Early Public Lands Surveyors in the Northwest
DAVID P. THOMPSON
By William W. and Jeanne E. Glenn The survey of the public lands in Oregon and Washington was conducted from 1851 through 1909 by US. deputy surveyors on a contract basis. Today's surveyors who retrace and resurvey these lines surveyed under the contract system come to know those early surveyors primarily by their surveying records and marks left in the field. I am one of those surveyors. For the most part, little is known about the contract surveyor's origin, family and non-surveying interests. My interest in the early surveyor began when I found my first "original" comer in 1950 while working under Thomas A. Tillman as a surveying aid for the Bureau of Land Management. My interest continued to grow when I became a cadastral surveyor performing dependent resurveys and directing afield party of my own. Later as chief branch of cadastral surveys, I met and talked with many surveyors who expressed an interest in knowing more about those hale and hardy individuals who left the footsteps we follow. Now that I am retired, I and my wife have begun to research the background of the contract surveyor We would like to share with you in the following article and others in subsequent issues of this magazine some of our discoveries about these surveyors' "other side".

CREDITS INA is a project initiated by Professor Miguel Angel Centeno of Princeton University 's Sociology Department and is being pursued in collaboration with Eszter Hargittai of the same department and numerous Associates M O T I V A T I O N But, what does it mean? What does a globalized world look like? Despite the extensive discussion on globalization and international interdependence, we still have a relatively limited idea of what this new world looks like. We understand that there are more international connections taking place, that a wider variety of goods and services are being exchanged across boundaries, that more and more people live their professional, family, and intellectual lives in more than one country, and that cultural autarky is no longer possible. Yet, we know little more than that. How fast have we integrated? What does the global web look like? Who is in the center and who is on the margins? Have these positions shifted over the past two decades? The combination of various network data sets and analyses would allow us to link network position in a particular field (e.g. telecommunications) with that in another (e.g. migration). With longitudinal data, we could begin to explore the extent to which position in a particular network could explain or predict subsequent position in another. By adding non-network data such as economic growth rates, policy votes, or cultural trends, we could also test the explanatory power of network position in and of itself. These efforts would allow us to begin addressing some of the most important questions in contemporary social science:
