Among Brailer’s first responsibilities will be the exploration of incentives for technology use in the federal Medicare program. Thompson, announcing the appointment at an HHS health IT summit, said he’ll work closely with Brailer, and he encouraged the industry to hold him responsible for the performance of the new coordinator. “He’ll report to me,” Thompson told an overflow crowd in a Washington hotel ballroom, “so you can hold me responsible.” In addition to serving the Health Technology Center, Brailer spent a decade at CareScience Inc., working as the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. There, Brailer played a crucial role in the development of a local health information infrastructure in Santa Barbara County, California, which has been suggested as one of the models for the development of a broader national infrastructure. In addition to announcing Brailer’s appointment, Thompson also said that several other department priorities were coming to fruition. A Multicultural Exploration with Bread The high stakes assessment environment in Florida, with an emphasis on reading, writing, and mathematics, has placed pressure on teachers to find time to teach social studies. One way to maintain social studies in the elementary curriculum is to integrate the content with the teaching of mathematics and language arts. Elementary teachers may naturally think of the social studies and language arts connections, through the reading of books with a multicultural connection; however, they may overlook the mathematics connections that are possible with those same books.

The Astorians John Jacob Astor = Wilson Price Hunt = Robert Stuart John Jacob Astor was a rich New York businessman, born in Germany. When Lewis and Clark had made their voyage to the Columbia, Astor realized that this gave new trade possibilities. He sent two expedition to the Columbia, most of his men being fur traders from Montreal. One expedition would go to the Columbia by ship, around Cape Horn, and build a fort, fort Astoria, at the mouth of the river, the other would join them after an overland journey. The overland party was led by Wilson Price Hunt. He set out from St. Louis late in 1810, and wintered near present-day St. Joseph, Missouri . In April 1811 he set out again, reaching the villages of the Arikara Indians (South Dakota). There he traded with the famous Spanish trader Manuel Lisa . to get horses, as he wanted to continue by land and not by river, so as to avoid the area of the much feared Blackfoot Indians. From there he went straight west until he reached the Wind River. He and his men were awed by the sight of the great herds of buffalo that used to roam around in that region. He crossed the Rocky Mountains through the Union Pass, and reached the Snake River. Although the Indians warned him that the river could be dangerous, Hunt decided to let the horses run loose, and descended the river by canoe. For nine days they did so without difficulties, but then they arrived at the rapids. One canoe was torn to pieces, killing one man. They tried to find a way around the rapids, but when scouting parties reported that the river went on in the same vein for a large distance. The decision was made to continue the expedition by foot.

Summary, Program Abstracts Meeting Photos SHD 2003 Meeting Attendees Experience New Orleans On October 23 through 26, 2003, a total of seventy-seven registrants and fifteen guests attended SHD’s 44th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. The theme of the meeting was La Nouvelle Frontiere: Exploration and Discovery of the Louisiana Purchase. New Orleans was chosen as the site for our meeting because of its pivotal location in the Louisiana Purchase. The timing was perfect as 2003 marked the Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase (1803-2003). Our meeting was held in the French Quarter in recognition of that area’s historic role. Highlights of the conference included a Thursday evening presentation by several representatives from France who inaugurated the new French website “ Louisiane ” at the Williams Research Center of The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC). The website “Louisiane” was developed by: Jean-Pierre Dalbéra, Chief of the Mission de la Recherche et de la Technologie of the Ministry of Culture; Camille Constans, Director of the multimedia project “Louisiane,” and Dr. Gilles-Antoine Langlois, author of the website. French Consul General Patrick Rolot, and Inspector General of the French Archives Elizabeth Rabut were also present to welcome SHD members. Our hosts, THNOC, also mounted an informative exhibit of historic maps at the Williams Research Center. Later that Thursday evening, THNOC hosted a reception in the beautiful courtyard at their museum in the French Quarter.

The nature and origins of words have long held a fascination for interested scholars and lay public, not only to satisfy intellectual curiosities, but also because word knowledge has particular importance in literate societies. For the same reasons, scholarly interests have turned toward determining the nature of vocabulary development that is, how and to what extent speakers and writers of English become, like Humpty Dumpty, masters of our lexical stock. Introduction David Thompson is famous for his early exploration and mapping of western Canada and the northwestern United States. From 1790 to 1812, he traveled the Northwest using a sextant and compass to record valuable navigational information. He used this information to make some of the earliest detailed maps of the northwestern U.S. and western Canada. Paradoxically, although his navigational skills gave Thompson his claim to fame, they are poorly understood by both historians and geographers. How did he calculate his latitude and longitude, and how accurate was he? In this issue, I will use examples from Thompson's notes to illustrate and explain the navigational methods that he used.
