PI-740 : Dynamic programming parallel implementations for the Knapsack problem
Fichier PostScript / PostScript file 15 pages - juillet 1993 A systolic algorithm for the dynamic programming approach to the knapsack problem is presented. The algorithm can run on any number of processors and has optimal time speedup and processor efficiency. The running time of the algorithm is Theta(mc/q+m) on a ring of q processors, where c is the knapsack size and m is the number of object types. A new procedure for the backtracking phase of the algorithm with a time complexity Theta (m) is also proposed which is an improvement on the usual strategies used for backtracking with a time complexity Theta (m+c). Given a practical implementation, our analysis shows which of two backtracking algorithms (the classical or the modified) is more efficient with respect to the total running time. Experiments have been performed on an IWARP machine for randomly generated instances. They support the theoretical results and show the proposed algorithm performs well for a wide range of problem size.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STATEMENT ON BETA THETA PI INVESTIGATION CONTACT: Jack Beresford, (619) 594-5204, jack.beresford@sdsu.edu An investigation is currently underway into a suspected hazing incident that occurred on Sept. 30 at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house on College Avenue. The incident involves four 18-year old Beta Theta Pi pledges who claim to have been coerced into drinking several shots of vodka by one or more fraternity members following a party. One of the pledges was subsequently taken to Alvarado Hospital in a highly intoxicated condition and with a gash on his chin. The student was treated for alcohol poisoning and released the next morning. All four students, who reside in Zura Residence Hall, have since left the fraternity.
Under investigation are several possible violations of SDSU's alcohol and hazing policies. This includes serving alcohol to minors, serving hard alcohol at chapter functions and compelling pledges or new members to consume alcohol - which is considered hazing. The investigation is being jointly conducted by the University Police, Housing and Residential Life and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) Judicial Board. The matter has also been referred to the SDSU Office of Judicial Procedures for review. Students found in violation of University regulations may be expelled, suspended, or placed on probation. Until the judicial process is completed, none of the names of the students involved will be made public. However, the Beta Theta Pi advisor and national fraternity have both been contacted about the incident. The national fraternity is reviewing the incident.

Theta Delta Chi attempts to recharter
By Todd Hildebrandt Published: Thursday, February 21, 2002 Theta Delta Chi, the fraternity banned for 10 years in 1988 from UR after the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old off-campus student, is in the process of re-colonizing at UR.
The group presented their argument for recognition Tuesday night to the Fraternity President's Council, who will make a decision next week on whether to recognize QDC.
"In the coming days, the Fraternity President's Council will review the presentation and make a sound decision regarding Theta Delta Chi's involvement with the Council and our Greek community," junior and FPC President Matt Davison said.
Other university officials have been impressed with the fraternity's willingness to make amends for its past and with the quality of the group's members.
"The group seeking reinstatement as QDC has an opportunity — and has expressed the desire — to be a force for good," Dean of The College William Green said. "It serves no educational purpose to respond negatively when a fraternity seeks responsible membership in our community."

Abstract
This paper describes a programming system based on the metaphor of communicating objects. Experience with a running system shows that this model provides flexibility, modularity and compactness. A compiled representation for the language is presented, along with an interpreter suitable for microcoding. The object-oriented model provides naturally efficient addressing; a corresponding virtual memory is described which offers dense utilization of resident space. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the Smalltalk project is to support children of all ages in the world of information. The challenge is to identify and harness metaphors of sufficient simplicity and power to allow a single person to have access to, and creative control over, information which ranges from numbers and text through sounds and images. In our experience, the SIMULA notion of class and instance is an outstanding metaphor for information structure . To describe processing

http://www.thetamastery.com/programs.html
Programs WHAT IS THETA? Just as your heart beats so many times a minute, your brain emits a certain number of vibrations, or cycles per second too. These four brain-rhythm patterns are called Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. The Beta level is the level in which you live, eat and work most of the time. In Beta, the mind focuses on things on the physical dimension, the physical senses: time, space, intellect, belief and reason. Beta is where you also experience stress, tension, depression, self-doubts and emotional outbursts. It's where you experience negative thinking, Beta is left brain driven. Spending your entire waking-life in Beta is like driving a thousand kilometres in first gear. You'll eventually get to your destination but it will take you an eternity, and you certainly won't enjoy the journey. The Alpha level is the level in which the mind is focused on inner levels of power and awareness. Alpha is the source of inspiration, intuition and creativity. The mind is free from the worries and frustrations of the physical world. The average person operates in this level only in rare fleeting moments of strong emotion or deep thought. The next level is Theta . For most people Theta is the sleep level. It is an easy to learn conscious disconnection of the body and the mind, so there's little awareness of physical sensations.

MODULE Construct
  • Synopsis
F90 provides many enhancements, among them are modularity and security. The MODULE construct in F90 permits the user the ability to modularize an application program to cleanly separate functionality and tasks within a program. It can also provide additional security, through the qualifiers PRIVATE and PUBLIC , by allowing user to selectively making procedures within a module accessible outside of the module. Functionalities provided by COMMON, INCLUDE and statement function in f77 can be replaced by MODULE
  • Syntax
    MODULE ModuleName
    END MODULE ModuleName
Accessing contents of MODULE is facilitated by adding statement "USE ModuleName"
  • Purpose
To permit entities defined/declared in it to be used by some other program units.
  • Example
Shown below are two programs: the f77 version is listed first which uses COMMON, INCLUDE as well as statement functions; the same task is shown in an f90 program to follow using MODULE . The programming task is to compute coordinates of 2 vertices of line segments that make up the circumference of a circle. Each vertex of the polygon is assigned a node number.

What is DSMI/2 ?
DSMI/2 is a sound interface for PC compatible computers running on IBM's Operating System /2. It goes beyond the basic sound functionality offered in OS/2 via MMPM/2 and provides programmers with a variety of functions to play music and sound effects in their programs. DSMI/2 will be most useful to multimedia applications and game developers. It is also very well suited for network audio applications, such as Internet applications.
Non exhaustive DSMI/2 features list:
  • Dolby Prologic Surround sound support
  • Loads and plays many different music files : MODs, STMs, S3Ms, 669s, MTMs, FARs and other formats
  • Up to 32 simultaneous channels lets you play sound effects simultaneously with music !
  • Support for direct loading of WAV files as musical instruments or effects
  • Support for loading of files from resources or memory buffers in addition to disk files
  • Supports any soundcard with an MMPM/2 driver
  • Real-time support with Direct Audio (highly recommended)
  • Very easy sound card setup
  • Special 16-bit support, which means great sound quality on 16-bit cards
