Research Areas
Theoretical research in Argonne's Physics Division addresses a broad range of problems involving the stucture and dynamics of hadrons and nuclei. There is a strong emphasis on comparison to data provided by experimental groups at Argonne and at other facilities around the world. The principal areas of research include: Several of these projects require major numerical simulations using massively parallel state-of-the-art computers, including the Argonne LCRC Linux cluster ( Jazz ), the Argonne MCS Linux cluster ( Chiba City ) and the NERSC IBM SP ( Seaborg ). Many projects also involve collaborators at US and foreign universities, and other national laboratories.

Research Interests
I am a member of the Toronto high-energy theory group My goal is to understand the fundamental dynamics of quantum gravity. I study this using string theory (a.k.a. superstring or M theory), with applications to black holes and cosmology, and links to gauge theory and particle physics. My work to date has concentrated on problems on the gravitational side of string theory. I began with aspects of the black hole information problem, moved to entropy computations when D-brane physics arrived, developed aspects of holographic gravity/gauge dualities useful to black holes and black branes, and most recently concentrated on the search for string theoretic mechanisms for resolution of spacetime singularities. I am also interested in mechanisms for string theoretic prevention of other pathologies in spacetimes, such as regions with closed timelike curves.

    THEORETICAL PHYSICS
Curiosity about the world and a commitment to solving problems - these are the passions that drive the theoretical physics group at the University of Sydney. The aim of the group is to carry out internationally competitive research in theoretical physics. There are two main emphases: plasma physics, including applications to astrophysics, space physics and laboratory experiments; and electromagnetic theory and photonics , including wave theory, and linear, nonlinear and guided optics. Other interests include quantum optics, quantum electrodynamics, statistical physics and biophysics. The members of the Research Centre for Theoretical Astrophysics (RCFTA) and the Center for Wave Physics are part of the Theoretical Physics group. The RCFTA undertakes research in theoretical astrophysics with special emphasis on the fundamental physics of stars and on the physics of non-thermal phenomena. The aims of the Center for Wave Physics are to integrate expertise in the various components of wave science to generate new insights into fundamental wave science across disciplines. Associated groups include the Optical Fibre Technology Centre , the Photonics CRC and the VisLab computer visualization centre.
