Variations on a Theme Park:
The New American City and the End of Public Space
Edited by Michael Sorkin
Review by Paul Dorn
Review originally published in the John F. Kennedy University Bulletin, Spring 1992
URL: http://www.runmuki.com/paul/writing/sorkin.html Humanity's history is one of concentration. From the small, scattered bands of hunter-gatherers in ancient antiquity to the contemporary sprawling industrial metropolis, the trend has been toward ever-increasing population densities. Science, medicine, technology, languageevery development of human creativity has served to propel this trend further. Every great cultural institutionuniversities, libraries, museums, symphonies, cathedralsdepends upon a large population base to sustain itself. Concurrent with the growth of cities has been the development of more democratic forms of government. An atomized and dispersed population lacks the critical mass necessary to govern itself democratically; tyrants step in to fill the vacuum. But as people are drawn together into larger urban units, they begin to recognize their common interests, their common oppressions and their common goals. In short, they develop a sense of community and eventually begin to work collectively to improve their situation. Civilization, literally defined as social organization of a high order, has been the welcome result. But with the current crisis of US cities, caused by more than a generation of conscious neglect, democratic forms of government become increasingly difficult to maintain.

American Heritage Gallery opening in Epcot
This August, visitors to Epcot will be able to take part in the unveiling of the American Heritage Gallery slated to open in the American Adventure Pavilion.
The American pavilion is a colonial-style mansion whose roots are found in the architecture of Independence Hall, Boston's Old State House, Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. The 110,000 reddish colored bricks used on the building were all hand-made from Georgian clay and were actually tinted and aged to add to the authenticity. The floors inside are made from marble and copper. Inside the lobby and Halls of this grand structure, you'll find quotations from great Americans like Walt Disney, Althea Gibson, Charles A. Lindbergh, Ayn Rand, Thomas Wolfe, Wendell Wilkie and Jane Addams. Amidst the motivational sayings, you'll find artwork depicting the development of the United States.
The rose gardens around the pavilion are unique in that they are all varieties named for U.S. Presidents. In this building you can hear the melodious sounds of the Voices of Liberty, an a capella singing group who give a 15 minute program of traditional American folk songs. These heart-stirring renditions are not to be missed. This very popular show is interpreted by Sign Language Interpreters on Early Entry days at designated times. Call the Sign Language Co-ordinator at least two weeks prior to your visit, at (407) 824-5217 for details.

Have you ever gone to a theme park and wondered, “How did they do that?” Theme Park Engineering tells you. Instructor Steve Alcorn is the president of Alcorn McBride Inc., a company that engineers equipment for theme parks all over the world. For over twenty years he’s been having great fun bringing hundreds – perhaps thousands – of attractions to life all over the world. Now it’s your turn.
This class is a six-week “survey” course. That means we won’t be using math, chemistry or computer programming to do the assignments, just words. It’s a class about engineering – not an engineering class.
As an armchair theme park engineer you’ll learn about architecture, ride control, show control, audio, video, acoustics, lighting, mechanics, hydraulics, and figure animation. And just like in the real world, we’ll be sticking our nose into other people’s business! We’ll examine art direction, set design, merchandising, and even food service.
The resources that accompany each lesson point you towards companies that do Theme Park Engineering, industry trade organizations, plus interesting sites about roller coasters, haunted houses and other attractions.

POPULAR EXHIBITION ON DISNEY THEME PARK ARCHITECTURE TO CLOSE JANUARY 18
From the moment it opened in 1955, Disneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe, so have their architectural strategies spread beyond the park enclosures, suggesting new approaches to the "real-world" architecture of the shopping center and the resort and subtly changing public expectations of the cityscape. The exhibition showcasing more than 350 treasures from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks closes Sunday, January 18, at the Walker Art Center. In a closing-day lecture, "Beyond the Building: The Past, Present, and Future of Entertainment Architecture," John Cuningham and Jon Pugh of the Minneapolis-based architecture firm Cuningham Group will examine how architects use elements such as scale, themes, stories, and technologies to create physical and virtual entertainment environments. Covering the history of entertainment architecture from Greek tragedy to cyber-reality, the talk takes place at 3 pm in the Walker Auditorium. The 250-member Cuningham Group has helped shape the evolution of entertainment and themed destinations over the past three decades with clients such as Rainforest Cafe, Universal Studios, Billboard, and Disney. Founded in 1968 by John Cuningham, the firm has offices in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. In association with the Walker, Cuningham Group designed the specially commissioned Art Lab installation

Select Your Destination Phoenix More Destinations OAS_AD('TopLeft') Although most visitors go to Phoenix for the sun, golf courses or spas, the city does have a smattering of other attractions. Plan to spend a day downtown at two of the Southwest's top museums: the Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum, which, in our opinion, is the best museum in the country dedicated to Native American culture. If you've got children in tow, be sure to stop at the Arizona Science Center. Both children and adults will find the hundreds of exhibits there appealing. If you have time, pay a visit to the Heritage Square area of downtown: Some of the oldest residences in the city are found there. East of downtown, on the border with Tempe and Scottsdale, is another longtime favorite: the Desert Botanical Garden. It's beautiful year-round, but if you're visiting in the spring, don't miss the wildflower display. Next door is the Phoenix Zoo, the largest privately funded zoo in the country, where you can see desert animals such as Gila monsters and bald eagles up close. Also nearby is the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park, where you can walk the well-marked trail to see ruins of an ancient Hohokam village. Architecture fans should take the trek to far north Scottsdale to see Taliesin West, once the winter home of Frank Lloyd Wright.
