George Rickey first came to Santa Barbara to teach at UCSB in the Summer School program; throughout the 60s he and his family spent their summers here. In the mid 1980s his family began spending winters in Hope Ranch, and in 1986, he established a studio in Santa Barbara. Area collectors and museums have benefited from his friendship and productivity in Santa Barbara. The UAM was the recipient of a gift from the artist in 2000 of Annular Eclipse VI, which is permanently installed adjacent to the Museum. We honor the late George Rickey with a tribute exhibition on what would be his 97th birthday. June 2 - August 28, 2004

The Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, the Great Wall and Mount Rushmore are all on display, alongside windmills, wooden shoes and Marilyn Monroe; where else - Japan
By Ron Gluckman /roaming around Japan T HOUGHTS OF GODZILLA AND KING KONG race up the spinal bean stock as my body grows to gargantuan proportions. The earth quakes as I leap laughable little barriers. Cars crunch underfoot and screaming people scatter in all directions, as I stomp forward to scale the Empire State Building. The only danger is possibly tripping over the Arc de Triumph and crashing into Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty. It's easy to feel like a colossal kid at Tobu World Square in Japan. From the Taj Mahal and Roman Coliseum to the London Bridge and Great Wall of China, more than 100 of the world's famous buildings, bridges and monuments are recreated in excruciatingly exact 1:25 scale. Phineas Fogg would seem like a slowpoke in such surroundings, where minutes take you around the same world that Fogg circled in 88 days. Michael Palin would barely find enough material for a postcard, let alone a television series and supporting books, from a tour of Tobu World Square. But the Japanese always think big, even in miniature. That's why they built the entire world to precise scale at this odd site about two hours by train from Tokyo.

It is an elemental mystic power that is innate to all things. The physical manifestation of this power is a consequence of the desire for the invisible to be made visible. This desire, this great motivating force is essential to the life of a thing. It is a process which organizes and composes various interrelated forces into a unified whole. Theme Park Architecture in the Real World Through its emphasis on intimacy and human circulation, every Disneyland repudiates the sprawling urban realm that has been built since the 1950s. Disney's original Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT), or Project X, was planned as a "New Town" for actual Florida residents based on the urban concepts of planner Victor Gruen. However, because of Walt Disney's death, it was never built. The concept drawings for this gigantic and rarely discussed project tellingly reveal Disney's evolving urban vision. His theme parks inspired his plans to reform the American city. The exhibition culminates with a look at Disneyland's impact on the real worldits influence on shopping malls, restaurants, and city planningas well as Disney's place in our collective psyche. Disneyland's thematic nature has had an enormous impact. We know Disneyland so well that it is easy to overlook its conscious and unconscious influence and meanings. While the Disney dream with all its enchantment and largesse is unquestionably designed to entertain, this exhibition also reveals its enormous impact as a rational and complex approach to design and space. Disney’s Animal Kingdom
“Welcome to a kingdom of animals ... real, ancient and imagined:” Animal Kingdom Dedication Plague This 500-acre theme park is the largest of the Walt Disney World theme parks, however it is not size alone that sets it apart from the others. Lush landscaping, winding paths, beautiful gardens, mysterious and exotic architecture and over a 1,000 animals all give guests the sense that you have entered more than just another theme park. The Animal Kingdom opened in April of 1998 to some disapproval, controversy and even debate over whether a zoo no matter how nontraditional in design was worthy of Disney. Those initial criticisms have in part faded due to the collaborative efforts of Disney Imagineers along with some of the premiere zoological talent in the country who have turned out not only some unique and enjoyable attractions, but also some first class natural animal habitat exhibits. Most of the Animal Kingdom’s services are located just past the turnstiles and in Safari Village.

“To all who come to this place of joy, hope and friendship, welcome…” Epcot Dedication Plaque The Magic Kingdom was designed to create an experience of adventure or fantasy, while Epcot’s design lends itself more to education and inspiration. Before you start to have flashbacks of your high school biology class relax. Epcot, even while it attempts to enlighten its guests, will also entertain and at times even dazzle them. The Disney imaginers have created a world of sights, sounds and tastes that have delighted, entertained and satisfied guests for more than twenty years. Epcot is meant to be explored and experienced. If you find that a particular attraction interests you, linger there and seek out the many subtle sights and sounds that are so easily missed. On the contrary if a particular technology presented in an attraction offers little that interests you enjoy the show or ride and move on. Part of the beauty of Epcot is that it is not a checklist of headline attractions to be conquered, but more of an experience to be enjoyed even savored. Epcot is also more than twice the size of the Magic Kingdom, which means visitors will find themselves doing a considerable amount of walking. Due to the overall size and the design of the park guests often find that they are unable to see and experience all of the attractions found at Epcot in a single day.

Architecture for kids: blueprint for a green theme park
Too bad SeaWorld won't commit to more than PR on their theme park.
by Rebecca Grijalva with Platt/Whitelaw Architects t all began with a dream, a day dream. The homework assignment for the fifth- grade students in Mrs. Becky Reid's class at Sunset View Elementary was to daydream and imagine the perfect theme park ride. Their mission statement was to use earth-friendly design principles that reflect SeaWorld's commitment to the environment and to create an exciting and educational experience for all visitors and employees. The goal was to design a new companion theme park, next to SeaWorld, that compliments but doesn't copy and educates visitors about the importance of taking care of our earth.

A blueprint for building a story
First, the students arranged their theme ride ideas into sequences on a storyboard, just like real Imagineers. Some students started with an idea and remained true to their story. Others moved through variations and alterations on their ideas. Other literacy activities included comparing and contrasting the ordering principles of other theme parks, writing a commercial to advertise their ride and researching and writing an evaluation of a green building. Math was used to measure the theme ride's dimensions, square footage and cubic volume. Science lessons dealt with the earth friendly use of energy, air and water. Other discussions centered on sustainable development concepts from the Earth Summit in Rio, planning topics like transportation, traffic and parking, natural habitat conservation, where to put the naturally cleaning waste water treatment ponds designed like the ones found in Arcada, California, and what to do about the problems associated with the former toxic dump next door to the park.
