Eighteen years after Maryland's Enchanted Forest theme park closed, weeds and neglect are overtaking its storybook characters. (Meredith Peruzzi) "How much longer, Dad? How much farther, Dad?" Rachelina Bonacci remembers asking as her family drove toward the Enchanted Forest, a storybook-theme park in Ellicott City, Md., outside Washington, D.C. "Then you'd see the King welcoming you, and you knew you were there!" recalls Bonacci, 33, whose memories of the Enchanted Forest are shared by legions of kids who visited from 1954 to 1986, when the park closed. Today, a larger-than-life statue of Ole King Cole remains as a roadside icon that ushers visitors into the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center that was built on the 20-acre park in the 1990s. But the king's minions haven't fared as well: the Ugly Duckling, Gingerbread Men and other storybook characters, made in the 1950s of papier mache and coated with a material called Celastic, are crumbling to ruin behind a fence marked "No Trespassing."

From 1989 to 1995, I worked as a Senior Show Designer for Walt Disney Imagineering (the Theme Park design arm of the Walt Disney Co.). In that time I had the opportunity of working as the lead designer on Splash Mountain for Walt Disney World, and as one of the lead designers for Mickey's Toontown for Disneyland CA. Projects of this size involve hundreds of conceptual drawings, and in my years at Imagineering I created over 700 conceptual drawings and paintings. You can see some of them in recently published books about the Disney parks (see list below). Today I continue to work with Imagineering on a freelance basis. Mickey's Toontown, Disneyland CA For Mickey's Toontown, I worked as the lead Show Designer in charge of the Downtown portion of the project. During the two year project I had the opportunity to work with many talented designers such as Andrea Favilli, Maggie Parr, Chuck Ballew, Marcelo Vignali, and Rennie Marquez The project's concept leader was Joe Lanzisero and the entire land took on much of his wacky personality. Toontown is one of my favorite projects, and has influenced my work ever since.

Window on China A first trip to Window on China reminds visitors of the famous novel Gulliver's Travels. What really catches their eye is not little people but the astonishing accuracy of the 1:25th scale replicas of some of the world's most famous buildings. Located in Lungtan (..) near Shihmen Dam some 50 kilometers south of Taipei, Window on China is a marvelous miniature world that was originally designed to provide an overview of traditional Chinese buildings in mainland China and Taiwan, as well as to illustrate modern Taiwanese architecture. Window on China was established 11 years ago when theme parks were not very popular yet and tourist sites were just developing in Taiwan. The chairman of the park, C. H. Chu, recalls when he began thinking of doing something special for tourism in Taiwan. He started researching theme parks around the world. As his model, he chose the Madurodam in the Netherlands, a 'Lilliputian' world illustrating the daily activities of Netherlanders. Then he began to carry out his dream. From the beginning there were difficulties. Obtaining the original blueprints and construction diagrams of the buildings from mainland China proved frustrating. Chu set up a research group to gather data from Taiwan, Japan, and elsewhere, but not all the members of the group had the appropriate academic or architectural training; many had construction experience only. Strict attention to detail as well as intense trial and experimentation went into the creation of the faithful miniature replicasdown to the accuracy of the living trees, shrubs, and tiny figures.

    Ideas for Teachers
Design a Theme Park Alice Adams Glider Park , 1990, enameled steel and brick/site landscaping, 40' x 12' x 11' Location K-3 and Special Needs About the Art: Glider Park provides a place to sit and rest in a plaza separated from the street outside the Bathgate Industrial Complex Questions for Discussion: What do you see? What is a glider? How does Glider Park relate to both sculpture and architecture? Discuss what a business and technology center is and reflect on the many ways the employees can use the artwork (sit in the sun, eat lunch, relax). What other uses for theme parks can you think of? Sample Art Activity: In small groups, design a piece of playground equipment for a new theme park, or add something new to a familiar one. Think about what the people in your school would like to have in front of the school: play equipment, a place to eat lunch, etc., and how to make it a colorful and inviting environment. Purpose: to introduce art as a part of a larger architectural setting.

I Kinda Like the Disney Theme Parks
(All of these pictures are thumbnails and can be clicked for a larger size.) When was a little boy, there were all these National Geographic magazines around the house. Some neighbor gave us several dozen old issues in one big pile. They were all fascinating in their own way but the one that got looked at the most was from August, 1963. That was the issue that had a big spread about Disneyland and I claimed that issue as my personal treasure and it remained that way for years. (Ya know, I still have it.) I would be embarrassed to guess how many hours I poured through that magazine studying the artist's overview of the park, the photos of Tomorrowland, the Matterhorn Mountain with the Skyway going through it. There were also pictures showing the aerialist, Tiny Kline, who dressed as Tinkerbell and flew on a highwire from the Matterhorn toward Sleeping Beauty's Castle each summer night after the fireworks. Disney was just building its first modern Audio Animatronics attraction ( The Enchanted Tiki Room ) at the time the magazine came out and there were photos of a woman building and painting the parrots which would soon sing and joke and amaze the crowds in Adventureland.

D isneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture from the moment it opened on July 17, 1955. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe, their architectural strategies have spread far beyond the park enclosures. Disney's style has suggested a new approach to the "real-world" architecture of the shopping mall and the resort, and has subtly changed public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society, "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low," a metaphor for America's entertainment culture, and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.
This exhibition casts a fresh eye on critical aspects of modern America's architectural cultureits promises, its roots and offshoots, and its unparalleled worldwide impact. Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks presents 350 unique drawings, models, paintings, and plans for the parks and their attractions from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Epcot Epcot (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow), was originally meant to be a 'high-tech' city of twenty-thousand residents but ended up more of a theme park then a community. Epcot consists of two parts. 'World Showcase' lets you visit the world without all the flying. The other park is 'Future World' which as the name suggests lets you visit the future with all the latest technology. Future World Spaceship Earth: The giant silver golf ball that you see everywhere, but have no idea what it is!! This is future world. The Land/Living with the land: A 13-minute boat trip in a simulated rain forest and through African desert and American Plains. Circle of life based on characters from the 'Lion King'.
