CONFERENCE The Disney Legacy: Storytelling, Placemaking, and the American Life For seventy years, the Disney name has been synonymous with innovative storytelling, from animated films with carefully scripted characters and plots to parks designed to evoke particular places and themes. In this daylong symposium, we will examine how Disney animators and theme park designers have changed the way stories are told and will debate the purpose of narrative in the design of buildings, neighborhoods, and towns. Participants include John Canemaker, Philip Johnson, Karal Ann Marling, David Rockwell, Fath Davis Ruffins, Martin Sklar, Robert A. M. Stern, and Ken Wong. This program complements the exhibition The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks , organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, and will be held in the Great Hall at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, located at 7th Street and Third Avenue.

The Architecture of Reassurance edited by Karal Ann Marling
Disney theme parks have been seen as a harbinger of the culture of the shopping mall, a symbol of America in the entertainment industry, and the epitome of everything fanciful or gaudy in our modern, consumer-driven society. This fascinating volume explores popular and critical responses to the architecture of Disney parks from their inception in 1955 to today. Drawing upon a wealth of plans, posters, models, drawings, and paintings created by Walt Disney Corporation's "Imagineering" department, Designing Disney's Theme Parks
is the first book to examine the influence of Disneyland on our built environment and to address the complex issues arising from the Disney Corporation's current project to create an ideal city combining recreated historical architecture and progressive technology. This book provides a unique perspective on one of the great postwar American icons.

March 17 - August 5, 2001 Disneyland, the world’s first theme park, opened in Anaheim, California, in 1955. Structured by its themes, the park was divided into five smaller "lands" designed around cinematic and cultural motifs with particular meaning to Walt Disney: Main Street U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland. The architecture of the theme park was familiar from movies and television shows: Disneyland was a kind of backlot tour of a make-believe place where the illusion of a frontier town or a space colony could be conjured up at will. At the same time Disney saw the park as a tacit critique of the chaotic American city and the meandering post-war suburbs that were ruled by the automobile. New approaches to architecture and city planning are still central elements of the Disney parks. Today, the principles embedded in Disneyland have spread outside the parks and into the hotel complexes surrounding them, into stores and malls, and into our daily lives.

The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks
Opens March 17, 2001 at the National Building Museum

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks, a major exhibition exploring the evolution of the Disney theme parks, will open at the National Building Museum on March 17, 2001 . The exhibition traces the development of each sector of the parks themselves - Main Street, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland, and examines EPCOT’s simulated worlds and the real world architecture of Disney’s hotels and retailing shops. The exhibition will be on view through August 5, 2001.
Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota, the exhibition will present nearly 350 objects selected from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering. The artifacts include plans, drawings, paintings and models for the parks and their attractions; posters, prints and advertisements used to promote the parks; and historical photographs of the projects.
The exhibition has been designed to reflect Disneyland itself. At the original park in Anaheim - and those in Orlando, Tokyo and the outskirts of Paris - the "magic kingdom" is separated from the outside world. An entrance avenue, Main Street, leads straight to a plaza (known as "the hub") from which visitors visit each of the cinematic "lands," distinguished by a vertical landmark (known as a "wienie") drawing visitors toward it. The greatest of the wienies is the symbol of Disneyland itself, the Castle, which serves as the entrance to Fantasyland.

Rating: Summary: One of the few books about Disney Architecture Comment: This book is great! I'm sure that every Disney fan will apreciate it. Being the authors chosen from wide-ranging disciplines, this book analizes Disney Theme Parks in all their faces; it starts with an historical view of the Theme Parks written by the historian Neil Harris and it ends with the interview with the architect Frank Gehry. Great choice of images and photoes. Rating: Summary: Gross Negligence Comment: The author has very strange comments about the nature of the architecture of the Disney parks and the text is hard to read and confusing. I read the book last year and all I remember is that the pictures were interesting.

WHAT'S IT LIKE? Hundreds of millions of people visit amusement and theme parks each year. For the price of the admission ticket, they expect a day of entertainment, an experience completely outside mundane reality. However, behind the make-believe world of an amusement or theme park is the very real and often complex business organization that runs the park. Most amusement park-goers only interact with a small percentage of the park's employees, such as the ticket sellers, the ride operators, and the food serversemployees who usually work part-time and rarely keep their jobs for more than a year. Besides these workers, though, this industry also employs trained professionals who make careers out of their jobs. Amusement parks offer opportunities for all different types of professionals, and the larger the park the more types of professionals they hire. Some of the most common are managers, human resource specialists, accountants, sales and marketing people, and construction and trade workers. In addition, the industry also hires scientists, artists, designers, nurses, and engineers. Sometimes these people work directly for an individual amusement park, but more often they work for the large corporation that owns the amusement park or for private companies who do contract work for these large corporations.

ISBN: 0810931427 Building a Dream: The Art of Disney Architecture
by Beth Dunlop Guide Rating -
Don't let the "Disney" name in the subtitle fool you. Building a Dream: The Art of Disney Architecture is not a travel guide, a child's storybook or a sugarcoated romanticization of the Disney empire. Instead, author Beth Dunlop's picture-packed book is a careful study of the imaginative and often-revolutionary designs found in Disney theme parks, hotels and corporate offices. Dunlop has written for numerous architecture, design and travel magazines. For fifteen years, she was the architecture critic at the Miami Herald. She is the author of Florida's Vanishing Architecture and several books on twentieth century house styles. In Building a Dream, Dunlop approaches Disney architecture with the care and respect of an anthropologist. She examines original concept drawings and historic photographs and she conducts extensive interviews with architects, "imagineers" and corporate leaders.

Beard, Richard: Walt Disney's Epcot published by Harry N. Abrams; 1982 .
Do not be fooled by its appearance, this book is not really about Epcot as we experience it today but about the artistic concepts that gave birth to the different pavilions. It was published before the actual opening of the park. Strange book, but which contains fabulous illustrations. A condensed edition was also published in 1982. Birnbaum, Steve: Walt Disney World and Disneyland published by Hyperion.
The best traveler guide. It is recommended to get this book before visiting the Resort. Bright, Randy: Disneyland Inside Story published by Crown; 1987.
Nice history of the Park That Walt Built till Splash Mountain. This is the best introduction to the history of Disneyland that anyone can read. A must-have for Disney parks enthusiasts. Bruce Gordon, one of the authors of the in-depth history of Disneyland, The Nickel Tour, also contributed to the writing of this book. Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show published by Disneyland Paris.
