Even the trivial amusement of the designer (as in some unbuilt projects) is a "function." The word doesn't necessarily mean the utilitarian aspect for the client-users of the building. Buildings have an urban-design function in the townscape, for instance. They have cultural significance to the community. We may go on and on about the scope of a building's "function." So,in this sense, yes, architects still follow a "form follows function" principleeven Eisenman and possibly even Gehrybut there are very different notions of the particular "function" involved. If you're thinking of "function" more in terms of the internal workings of the building, then clearly few architects have ever allowed that to be the exclusive determinant of form. I recall Philip Johnson commenting, when asked by a student where he kept the garbage can in his famous glass house, that he didn't. Rather, he put it out in the lawn, sunken in a pit with a metal lid. Wasn't that inconvenient, the student askedtaking the garbage out in the rain? Johnson laughed and noted that "The human species is infinitely adaptable." Then on a more serious note he recalled his mentor, Mies's, notion that buildings outlive builders and have a life of their own, often converted to uses other than originally forseen. The classical view gives priority to the formal integrity of the architecture itself, supposing that use of the building may adapt to the form and probably will change from time to time.

I said at the outset that all architecture serves a function, but that the question is how to define the approriate function of architecture. I sense from the response that exception is taken to the merit of a work like the Farnsworth House, which the client rejected as unsuitable. In this instance the function envisioned by the owner (who was picking up the tab) and by the architect were not compatible. This may be merely a semantic issue, of course. Probably most readers still think of function in the utilitarian sense of the programmatic use of the building by its occupantsthe "brief," as I think you call it over there. It's still a factor, unquestionably, but the point is that buildings may serve that purpose without being architecture. The world is full of them.

Customer Reviews This is a very valuable book to me... I have been a disney fan for years, and when I finally went there, too many questions popped up.. why did they make that like that? whose names are those on the shop windows etc. This book explains how the ride/show designers came up with various concepts and goes into some of the philosophy/psychology behind the designs as well.Written as a series of lengthy articles, this encompasses most aspects of all the disney parks and is a valuable addition to anyones collection. I found it even more entertaining after having visited the park and experienced the architecture first hand. A look at the title, and even the opening, might lead one to think this book was written by and for academia. That is not true. You don't need to be an architect or engineer (either mechanical or social!) to enjoy this book. The photos of concept art make it worth the price of the book alone! One could happily treat this purely as a coffee table book. If you decide to read it, you will have to wade through the author's occasionally self-serving analysis, but that is not often. This is a quality book, based on an absolutely amazing traveling exhibit.

MODERN ART MUSEUM OF FORT WORTH TO EXHIBIT
THE ARCHITECTURE OF REASSURANCE:
DESIGNING THE DISNEY THEME PARKS Fort Worth, Texas, November 23, 1998
....Dr. Marla Price, Director of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, announced today that the museum will be one of five American museums to host The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks . "The Wonderful World of Disney" will be brought to the Modern Art Museum through this one-of-a-kind exhibition that explores the history of Disney theme parks from original concept to the most recent developments. The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks will be on view at the Modern's main location, in Fort Worth's Cultural District, February 13 through April 11, 1999. The national tour of this exhibition is sponsored by Target Stores, Dayton's and Mervyn's California.
The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks will present some 350 objects selected form the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering. These include plans, drawings, paintings, models for the parks and their attractions, historical photographs of the projects and advertisements used to promote the parks on view in a major museum exhibition for the first time ever.
From the moment it opened on July 17, 1955 with 24-camera live television coverage Disneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe so have their architectural strategies spread beyond the park enclosures suggesting new approaches to the "real world" architecture of the shopping center, the resort and subtly changing public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society of simulation and of pastiche. "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low" a metaphor for America's entertainment culture and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.

The Architecture of Reassurance edited by Karal Ann Marling
Disney theme parks have been seen as a harbinger of the culture of the shopping mall, a symbol of America in the entertainment industry, and the epitome of everything fanciful or gaudy in our modern, consumer-driven society. This fascinating volume explores popular and critical responses to the architecture of Disney parks from their inception in 1955 to today. Drawing upon a wealth of plans, posters, models, drawings, and paintings created by Walt Disney Corporation's "Imagineering" department, Designing Disney's Theme Parks
is the first book to examine the influence of Disneyland on our built environment and to address the complex issues arising from the Disney Corporation's current project to create an ideal city combining recreated historical architecture and progressive technology. This book provides a unique perspective on one of the great postwar American icons.

Designing Disneys Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance > Customer Review #1: Engaging Thoughts about Disney

Many books on Disneys art and achitecture try to convey its appeal primarily through the visual. Other books, particularly those that whole-heartedly criticize Disney, try to ignore the appeal of Disney altogether. This book attempts to integrate the visual evidence (photos, concept art) with academic writing on Disney (Karal Ann Marling, Erika Doss, Greil Marcus, etc.). Together, these aspects make for a solid inquiry as to the appeal of Disneys architecture. The book was written to supplement an art exhibit of the same name and, in many ways, feels a bit incomplete without its exhibition, partly because the book tries to cover a lot of territory in its two hundred or so pages. And a lot of the books pages are used for the essays. But the essays also provide the readers with another "way of seeing" the imagineers works, something that other books of this type tend to forgoe for more pictures. The essays are irreplaceable for this bookand many are useful for re-examining other books materials as well (Try it!).
