HARD TIMES
Presented in association with The Actors Gymnasium
Adapted from Charles Dickens' novel by ensemble member Heidi Stillman
Directed by Heidi Stillman Performed at The Ruth Page Center for the Performing Arts Lookingglass' season will open with a remounting its acclaimed adaptation of Charles Dickens' Hard Times, which was honored with five 2001 Joseph Jefferson Awards, including Best Production, Best Adaptation, Best Director-Play, Best Lighting Design and Best Choreography. Hard Times is a stirring portrait of the Gradgrind family, whose patriarch forbids his children all joy in their miserable existence in their Victorian mill town in northern England. Their lives are turned upside down when a young circus girl comes to live with them and shows them the value and power of imagination. Richard Christiansen, reviewing the production in the Chicago Tribune, hailed it as "a tribute not only to the glory of Dickens, but to the joy of theatre," adding that it is "as brilliantly staged as any Dickens stage adaptation I have ever seen." Hedy Weiss in the Chicago Sun-Times highly recommended Hard Times, calling it a "production of glorious innocence and rich wisdom...(with) endless moments to cherish."
