Shakespeare's Globe
Globe Theatre Links Home (picture credit: Utrecht University Library) The first Globe Theatre has an interesting origin. It seems that the Lord Chamberlain's Men originally performed at a place appropriately named "The Theatre" (built by James Burbage in 1576) on the outskirts of London. As their lease on this building came to a close, Richard Burbage bought the Blackfriars theatre, located in Upper Frater Hall. In 1598, however, after enduring complaints of their neighbors and a successful petition to the city fathers to keep the troupe out of Blackfriars, the company literally took matters into their own hands. They returned to The Theatre, stripped it to the foundation, moved the materials across the Thames to Bankside, and proceeded to construct the Globe. In 1613, the original Globe Theatre burned to the ground. Responsibility has been placed on a cannon shot during a performance of Henry VIII that ignited the thatched roof of the gallery. Construction was begun on the original foundation, and a new Globe was summarily completed before Shakespeare's death.

is often credited as being the first to incorporate songs as part of the action. This style was continued by Kern, Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, and most fully realized in 1927 in Showboat , the first show in which songs were written to match the story line, rather than the other way around.
When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the theatre community rallied. Irving Berlin wrote Yip, Yip, Yaphank Ziegfield Follies of 1917 was so popular that the French government reportedly commissioned pictures of the leading actress, Kay Laurell, to help recruit soldiers. Broadway stars organized food drives, promoted Liberty Bonds on stage and even volunteered on a seventeen-city tour, raising well over half a million dollars for the Red Cross.

Brassed Off Directed by Mary Simons Review by Campbell Kay Although The Full Monty achieved greater notoriety, Brassed Off arguably offers a sharper and more pointed critique of the devastation caused to working communities by the Thatcherite revolution of the 1980's. The systematic destruction of one of the country's great industries for purely political motives will be seen as one of the great tragedies of the late 20th century and Brassed Off is a poignant reminder of the effect that political decision making has at a purely human level. The Arts Theatre and Carlton Brass did a very good job of suggesting a community under pressure and the pride it could muster through its music making. It was a pity, therefore, that Carlton Brass spent most of its time behind a gauze without being fully integrated into the action of the play - a piece of staging which seemed to run contrary to the play's message. That said, their playing was flawless, stirring stuff, which gave one hope for the survival of this particular community's spirit.

Theatre in Exeter
Story of the Northcott Theatre The Northcott Today Photo Gallery Past Northcott Theatre Company ... Back to Home Page History of Theatre in Exeter The history of theatre in Exeter, or rather of live entertainment for the masses, can be traced back to the Roman occupation of the city. There is a reasonable amount of archaeological evidence that points to the existence of a Roman amphitheatre on Dane's Hill. Between the 13th and 18th centuries, plays and other formalised story telling were performed by groups of strolling players; companies of actors who would literally walk from town to town performing where they stopped for bed and board. They would perform in any suitable place, as there were no permanent venues. The first reference to a play in Exeter dates from 1348 when a sect known as the "Order of Brothelingham" was forbidden by the Archdeacon and the Dean of Exeter from "holding processions and enacting scenes in the streets". There followed performances of mystery plays by the Skinners Guild, and visits from mummers and minstrels to entertain the mayor. In 1593 Lord Strange's Company performed Marlowe's Dr Faustus in a city inn. So the story goes, they were so convincing that they actually managed to conjure forth the devil himself! The inn emptied very rapidly!

CAMINO THEATRE
At the San Diego College for Women, the Religious of the Sacred Heart, with their exquisite architectural vision, designed a beautiful campus in Spanish Renaissance style. One of those vision bacame Camino theatre. Mother Rossi considered Camino Theatre to be one of the finest elements of the college interior. She described some of the theatreÕs features as it appeared in 1952:
The inauguration of the new theatre took place on December 14, 1952, with a Christmas pageant directed by Mother Sally Furay, R.S.C.J. and performed by students and small children. Other memorable events include the first commencement ceremony (June 1, 1954) and events for the golden jubilee of Mother Rosalie Hill, R.S.C.J. (February 10, 1957).
SHILEY THEATRE
On November 12, 1996, Camino Theatre was rechristened Shiley Theatre. The new name honors Donald and Darlene Shiley for their support of The Globe/USD Master of Fine Arts Program, their commitment to undergraduate theatre performance and for two MFA program Fellowships made possible by the Donald and Darlene Shiley Endowment for Theatre Arts. During this time, Shiley Theatre was modernized for the new millennium and underwent a complete renovation, including sophisticated stage lighting, auditorium seating, air conditioning and other upgrades. In 1996 the final Presidential Debate between Senator Bob Dole and President Bill Clinton was nationally televised from Shiley Theatre. Today, Shiley Theatre is the cultural hub of USD Fine Arts activities in music and theatre.

History
No history of Playmakers Civic Theatre would be accurate and complete without featuring the banner logo (seen above) of one of the theatre's founders, Eddie Edwards' "downtown newsletter", from which early promotion of our theatre's productions became so crucial to the its success. Eddie always began his theatre features with Eddie Sez: For nearly a decade, Eddie and his "Sport Clinton Post" reflected the humor, wisdom and marketing savvy of one of P.C.'s most well-known merchants. The first male member of Playmakers Civic Theatre, Eddie would later be instrumental in saving the organization from "going under" back in the early '60s. It is with love, respect and appreciation that we dedicate this Website to his memory. Please enjoy.

Chattanooga is home to the Tivoli Theatre, a spectacular historic showplace known as the "Jewel of the South." For over 75 years the grand old theater has entertained Chattanoogans, offering everything from silent movies to Broadway blockbusters. The Tivoli opened on March 19, 1921 following two years of construction. Construction cost was close to $1 milliona lavish sum for its day. The Tivoli's interior reflects the Beaux Arts style popular for movie palaces of the 1920's. Its high domed ceiling, grand lobby, crystal chandeliers and elegant foyer were designed to transport patrons to a world of richness and splendor. Designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm of Rapp and Rapp, the Tivoli was built to accommodate both silent movies and live stage productions, making it state-of-the-art for its time. More innovations followed. In 1924 a $30,000 Wurlitzer organ was installed. And in 1926 the Tivoli became one of the first public buildings in the country to be air conditioned. Also in 1926, Paramount Studios bought the Tivoli, making it part of the Paramount-Publix theater chain. Throughout the 1920's, 30's and 40's, the Tivoli reigned as Chattanooga's premier movie and variety theater. However, with the emergence of television in the 1950's its patronage declined. Forced to close in 1961, the Tivoli narrowly escaped demolition.
